Motherwell through as Tawanda Maswanhise hits late double
Motherwell produced some good passages of play in and around the Morton box in the first half but had a major let-off when Paul McGinn felled Tomi Adeloye as the Morton striker was bearing down on goal. Referee Ryan Lee ruled McGinn got the ball, although he appeared to get the man first.
The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute. James Storer brilliantly pushed a Johnny Koutroumbis shot up and on to the bar before Apostolos Stamatelopoulos bundled the ball over the line.
Morton pressed for an equaliser but Maswanhise collected Liam Gordon's through-ball and slotted home in the 83rd minute before curling into the top corner from 25 yards in stoppage time for his fourth goal of the new season.
Ethan Ross hit a double as Falkirk came from behind to beat Queen's Park 3-1 and move top of Group A.
The William Hill Premiership newcomers fell behind in the 14th minute when Josh Fowler netted following a set-piece.
Ross scored on the rebound three minutes before the break after Calvin Miller's shot was saved and then headed home five minutes after the interval.
Brian Graham grabbed his first Falkirk goal in the 87th minute after Scott Arfield's deflected shot fell into his path.
Cove Rangers are a point behind the Bairns ahead of their final games after David Eguaibor hit a double in a 3-0 win at Brechin.
Kilmarnock were held to a goalless draw at Kelty Hearts but they remain a point ahead of both Livingston and East Fife in Group H after losing the penalty shoot-out. Killie next host the Fifers, who beat Brora Rangers 3-0 thanks to Nathan Austin's opener and an Alan Trouten double.
Ronan Hale hit a hat-trick as Ross County thrashed Edinburgh City 8-0 but Partick Thistle remain two points clear ahead of their trip to Dingwall on Saturday. First-half goals from Aidan Fitzpatrick and Tsoanelo Letsosa earned the Jags a 2-0 victory over Queen of the South.
Dundee left it late to record a first win under Steven Pressley as they beat Bonnyrigg Rose 3-1, although they cannot progress. Clark Robertson's opener was cancelled by Cameron Ross but the visitors struck twice in the final four minutes through Emile Acquah and Billy Koumetio.
First-half goals from Dom Thomas, Curtis Main and George Oakley saw Ayr beat Forfar 3-0 and move two points ahead of St Mirren ahead of the Group D decider in Paisley on Sunday.
A Lee Kilday own goal earned Dunfermline a 2-1 win over Hamilton and kept alive their hopes of progress behind Group E leaders Hearts, who can maintain their perfect record against Dumbarton on Wednesday.
St Johnstone are in control of Group F after goals from Jamie Gullan, Josh McPake and Makenzie Kirk earned a 3-1 win over Raith Rovers. The Perth side are three points ahead of Inverness, who thrashed East Kilbride 6-2.

Martindale: ‘I'd put my money on Tony Bloom'
Businessman Tony Bloom has undoubtedly achieved with a provincial club, Brighton and Hove Albion, preserving their top flight status in England and taking the South Coast club into Europe. Now, he has invested nearly £10m in Heart of Midlothian FC and was a spectator as the Gorgie club earned three points to open their William Hill Premiership campaign on a high with a 2-0 home win over Aberdeen on Monday. On the eve of the game, Bloom reiterated his desire to split Scotland's big two, Celtic and Rangers, and David Martindale, Livingston's straight-talking manager, warned critics not to discount the Brighton chairman who now as a stake of just over 29 per cent in Hearts. History may be against Bloom as the Old Firm have won every league title between them since Aberdeen won in 1985 under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. Martindale (pictured by Nigel Duncan), however, told a media briefing at the Home of the Set Fare Arena: 'If I was a betting man, I would put my money on Tony Bloom achieving what he said he wants to achieve. 'I'd put my chips behind him because he's shown what he can do.' He was there to preview his club's home William Hill Premiership clash with newly-promoted Falkirk who pipped Martindale's men for last season's Championship. The pair clash at 3pm on Saturday. Livingston earned a valuable point on the road at Rugby Park last Saturday, coming from 2-0 down with goals from Robbie Muirhead and Scott Pittman, while Falkirk also drew their season-opener at home to Dundee United last Sunday. It finished in a 2-2 draw, Dylan Tait and Ethan Ross netting. Martindale does not expect there to be much between the teams but he praised his men for their character and resilience in last weekend's game, and he added: 'We deserved something from the game, we deserved a point, minimum. 'They boys stuck to the task and we were a wee bit unlucky to be two goals down, we stuck to the process, stuck to the tactics, overall, the performance was there.' He added: 'Falkirk as a club have done tremendously well, and John (McGlynn) has done a great job. The club, John and the players should take a lot of credit and they are back in the Premiership. 'We had good games last year, there was nothing in the games, I don't think there will be anything in this game and it will be a tight affair.' He added: 'I am looking forward to the game, we are at home and there is a lot of familiarity and continuity there with both teams. We've probably had a bigger turn around in terms of numbers but, in terms of the starting side, there is not a huge difference.' Martindale may add to his side as he has suffered early-season injuries one, in particular, to midfielder, Aidan Denholm who he secured from Hearts, but he added: 'If the window shut tomorrow I would be fairly happy with what we have got, but potentially we could strengthen one or two.' Injuries have set the West Lothian club back in 'the middle of the park', and Martindale revealed: 'We are quietly active on that front, but that is us reacting to injuries, if I am being honest.' John Souttar will continue to give 100 per cent despite doubts over his Rangers future
The 28-year-old Scotland international signed for the Light Blues from Hearts in 2022 and has moved into the final year of his contract. Following the 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifier at Ibrox on Tuesday night, Gers boss Russell Martin was asked about Souttar's contract situation and said: "John knows how I feel about him. Kevin (Thelwell, sporting director) and the gang know how I feel about him. "But on the contract front, it will be dictated by John, his agent and the hierarchy here. I'll keep giving my opinion, for sure, but it's not my job to sort that stuff out." "Look, I love this place. I love this club," said Souttar, who took over the armband from James Tavernier who was dropped to the bench. "I love being here. That's really all I'll say on the matter. "I've not really heard much recently, so all I can do is train hard every day. "Every day I step on the pitch, I enjoy playing for the Rangers because I know how special the club is to play for. "Every time I step on the pitch, I give it 100 per cent, and I'm sure the rest will take care of themselves. "Look, whatever happens, will happen. All I can say is, every time I pull on that jersey, I'm honoured, and that will never change. Every time I step on that pitch, I'll give everything." Martin got the positive reaction he was looking for from his side following the deflating 1-1 draw in the opening William Hill Premiership opener against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday. The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad and Tavernier, midfielder Nicolas Raskin, attacker Kieran Dowell and striker Danilo were left out for the visit of the Czech side. New signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made an impressive debut with left-back Jefte, midfielder Lyall Cameron and Cyriel Dessers returning and improvement was immediate. Winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 14 minutes, Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval and Gassama scored a third early in the second half – his fourth European goal in three Euro ties – to put Rangers in a strong position ahead of the return leg next week. Souttar said: "I think when any of us go out in Ibrox we have to put in a big performance, and especially after the weekend, I think we let ourselves down. I think everyone will tell you that. "We did all that work in pre-season, we worked hard and to play the way we did at the weekend, it was disappointing for everyone. "So it was important we bounced back. I think we did that, especially in the first half. "I thought in the second half we maybe dipped a bit, we went back a bit more than we should have. "But I thought in the first half we showed great energy, we passed the ball, everyone was up for it, we moved. "It was enjoyable to play. When we're playing like that it's an enjoyable place to play."

West Brom loanee returns to parent club amid Motherwell injury woe
The Steelmen have issued an injury update on Eseosa Sule Motherwell have announced that forward Eseosa Sule is set to be "missing for a period of time" due to injury and has returned to parent club West Brom for treatment. The 19-year-old joined the Steelmen on a season-long loan this summer but just one game into the Premiership campaign, he will play no part in Jens Berthel Askou's plans for the foreseeable future. He played in three of the club's Premier Sports Cup clashes last month but missed Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Rangers. Motherwell have remained tight-lipped on both the nature of his injury and the time he will spend on the sidelines with a club statement saying: "After constant and continuous communication between both clubs since the injury occurred, it has been decided that the West Brom loanee will return to his parent club to begin the rehabilitation process and will return to Motherwell when he has completed his recovery." Fir Park gaffer Askou added: "Eseosa has made a very good impression since he arrived and was growing with the team and developing really well until his injury. 'It's very unfortunate for him and us that we will now be missing him for a while. We all look forward to his return to full fitness and for him to continue his journey with us on the pitch.' Sule said on his Instagram page: "Gutted to be missing the start of the season, but I'll be back stronger."
