Delhi High Court: Adults Have Right To Marry Without Family Interference
Justice Sanjeev Narula stated that the Supreme Court has consistently upheld this principle, directing law enforcement to protect couples from threats or coercion. In this case, the court ordered police protection for a young couple who feared harassment from the woman's family.
The couple had solemnised their marriage on July 23, 2025, following Hindu rituals at an Arya Samaj trust in Delhi.
They approached the court after the woman's parents allegedly tried to pressure her, despite her voluntary departure from her family home and her clear affirmation of the marriage during a police inquiry. That inquiry, initiated after a "missing" complaint, was later closed.
To ensure their safety, the court instructed the local Station House Officer (SHO) to assign a beat officer, brief them on the court's directives, and provide the couple with emergency contact numbers. Any reported threats must be documented and addressed without delay.
Justice Narula clarified that the court was not ruling on the veracity of the allegations but was solely focused on protecting the couple's fundamental rights to life, liberty, and dignity.

The CEO has asked him to hand over the form to the BLO concerned, who already stands exposed for a goof-up, the Left leader asserted. "He (the BLO) has confessed to his mistake and told the CEO that Mintu's name got struck off instead of another person," said Kunal. If the BLO spoke the truth, the name of the dead person must be there on the draft electoral rolls, the CPI(ML)-L secretary said, adding that Mintu is being made to run from pillar to post because of this "comedy of errors". Replying to a query from journalists, he said, "We have identified altogether 21 people, so far, who have been wrongfully declared dead, leading to deletion of their names. Of them, 10 were produced before the Supreme Court. He added that the apex court was convinced of the mistake in only two instances - one was of Mintu and the other was that of a woman in Raghopur. Incidentally, Raghopur is the assembly seat of the leader of the opposition Tejashwi Yadav, whose party RJD is an alliance partner of the Left. "We do not know how effective the intervention by the Supreme Court is going to be. The Election Commission has been brazening it out, falsely claiming that political parties are not coming up with any claims or objections. We shall keep helping as many people as possible in getting their names included in the voters' list," Kunal said.

Opposition to take call on protests against Bihar SIR on August 18
The Opposition parties on Thursday (August 14, 2025) welcomed the Supreme Court's directions to the Election Commission of India to take steps to make the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) more transparent but said that the observations illustrate the shortcomings in the process that require a debate in the Parliament. A call on continuing the protests against the SIR in the last week of Parliament's Monsoon Session, which ends on August 21, will be taken at the floor leaders' meeting on Monday. Speaking to The Hindu, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal, who is also a petitioner in the case, said that the Opposition's campaign will end when all the issues concerning the SIR are settled. 'We will decide our Parliamentary strategy on the issue on Monday morning when floor leaders of Opposition parties meet,' he said. CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the issue of legality of SIR is yet to be determined by the Supreme Court. The interim order, he said, addresses some of the basic objections, but for the 3.5 million migrant workers whose names have been struck off, the onus remains on them to raise objections. 'The scale of exclusion is huge, time is short and most of the electors have been wrongfully penalised for no fault of their own. The onus of correction should also be put on the perpetrators of the error,' he said. Lauding the Supreme Court's directions, DMK's Rajya Sabha floor leader Tiruchi Siva said the judiciary has done its bit and now it is for the legislature to play its role. 'Judiciary has come to the rescue of democracy, it is now for the legislature to safeguard it,' he said. CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, in a post on X, said the debate over SIR extends beyond mere revision, raising concerns about 'systemic sabotage' in the voters' list that could undermine democracy. The party's Rajya Sabha floor leader John Brittas said the Opposition's protests had started against the SIR in Bihar, but since then more evidence has emerged on adulteration of voter lists that must be addressed. 'We need to deliberate upon the electoral process and how to ensure its sanctity. We will take a considered call on Monday on how to proceed further,' he said. Trinamool Congress's Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale said the Supreme Court's directions partially prove the Opposition's allegations and the issue must be discussed in Parliament. 'Even before the Supreme Court has settled the issue, the EC has announced its intentions to carry out such an exercise in West Bengal and Assam. This shows its sinister agenda to tamper with the elections. Why is it in such a hurry,' he asked.

Actor Darshan, four others remanded in central prison on a day of high drama
After nearly 10 months of the bail period, Kannada film actor Darshan and four others were arrested by the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police for the third time. They were remanded in custody at the Central Prison of Parappana Agrahara on Thursday after the Supreme Court (SC) cancelled their bail. The police, following the SC order, arrested Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in the case, at her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and three other accused, namely Pradosh from Girinagar, Lakshman from RPC Layout, and Nagaraj from Mysuru. Hearing on Aug. 23 All the accused were subjected to medical examination before being escorted, amidst tight security, to the judge's residence. The judge ordered them to be sent to judicial custody and posted the next hearing for August 23. The other two accused, Anukumar and Jagadeesh, arrested from Chitradurga, will be produced before the court on Friday, S. Girish, DCP, West Division, supervising the development, said. Darshan was arrested from his wife's apartment in Hosakerehalli, where he had come to see his son. According to sources, Darshan, to avoid the media glare, changed vehicles and shifted from his SUV into another car and entered the apartment by the back door. The police, who were present at the apartment, arrested him and brought him to the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station, where the other accused were housed. Family members, including Darshan's and Pavithra's mothers, accompanied them to the station. Strict vigil The prison officials have made elaborate security arrangements inside the prison to house Darshan and Pavithra Gowda, considering the earlier episode of security lapses. The apex court, while rejecting the bail, warned of strict action against officials if the accused is found to have special privileges.
