Haryana approves budget for PM Poshan scheme to enhance nutrition in schools

Chandigarh: The State Level Steering-cum-Monitoring Committee (SLSMC) for the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM-Poshan) Scheme (formerly Mid-Day Meal Scheme) met on Thursday under the chairmanship of chief secretary Anurag Rastogi.

The committee approved a budget of Rs 665.65 crore for the financial year 2025–26.
The scheme aims to benefit more than 1.5 million children, including 80,862 in bal vatikas, 828,533 in primary, and 638,714 in upper primary schools across the state.
The chief secretary emphasised the need for effective and timely implementation of the scheme to ensure that nutritious, protein-rich meals reach every eligible child.
He directed officials to adopt best practices from other states and incorporate menu improvements based on nutritional science and local dietary preferences. He said, "This scheme is not just about providing meals; it is a mission to ensure the universalisation of primary education by improving enrolment, retention, and attendance, while also enhancing children's nutritional status.

During the meeting, it was informed that, on the suggestion of the additional chief secretary, health, steps were taken to plant green leafy vegetables like methi, palak, and sarson in 10,080 school kitchen gardens across the state.
Additional chief secretary, school education, Vineet Garg, said to further enhance the nutritional impact of the scheme, the department recently signed an LoU with the World Food Programme for four districts: Mewat, Panipat, Sonipat, and Palwal (only Hathin block). As part of enhanced nutritional support, 'pinni' is being distributed once a week in Bhiwani and Mewat as a supplementary food item.
Milk to be served 6 days a week
Furthermore, chief minister Nayab Singh Saini approved the department's proposal to serve 200 ml of skimmed flavoured milk six days a week, instead of the earlier three days, in all districts. In addition, pinni will now be distributed once a week across all districts. On two days a week, protein milk bars will also be provided to students from bal vatika to Class 8 in all govt schools.

BHUBANESWAR/ JEYPORE: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced that construction of the six-lane Bhubaneswar-Berhampur-Jeypore economic corridor will be started soon. On the second day of his visit to Koraput district, Majhi also inaugurated the 650-bed hospital at Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College built at a cost of Rs 280 crore. Addressing a function on the occasion, the chief minister said the economic corridor will play a vital role in all-round development of Koraput district by boosting connectivity to different parts of the state. The expansion of the hospital of the medical college will be a boon for the people of the district and neighbouring region as they will no longer have to travel to other cities for availing quality treatment and health services. The new hospital will benefit the people of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and also the neighbouring areas of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said. Announcing that all vacancies in medical and allied posts at the SLN MCH will be filled up soon, Majhi said a cancer hospital is also being built on an area of two acre adjacent to the hospital at a cost Rs 41.15 crore. Emphasising focus of his government to provide best of healthcare in every district, the CM said there are 12 government medical colleges in the state at present and four more are coming up in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Nabarangpur districts. He also said the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has greatly benefitted the people of the state with more than 3.46 crore covered under the scheme along with Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY). The government has already released Rs 900 crore in lieu of cashless treatment provided to the people in best of hospitals, he said. Under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana, 8,644 senior citizens aged above 70 have received free treatment worth Rs 35.60 crore. In Koraput district alone, over three lakh AB-PMJAY and GJAY cards have been distributed, with 9,006 people enrolled under the senior citizens' scheme, he added. The chief minister said four private hospitals in Koraput district are empanelled under the ABPMJAY-GJAY, enabling local access to cashless treatment. Health and Family Welfare minister Mukesh Mahaling was present among others.

UMERKOTE/BHUBANESWAR: The BJD has called a 12-hour bandh in Raighar block of Nabarangpur district on Monday in protest against the death of the 21-year-old nursing student at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. The woman had allegedly consumed poison on July 17 following circulation of her private photos by a youth, who is said to have been in a one-sided love with her. She died during treatment at AIIMS-BBS on Saturday. Addressing the media on Sunday, BJD general secretary and former Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi remarked that the BJP government has failed to protect women in the state. He further sought resignation of deputy chief minister-cum-Women and Child Development minister Pravati Parida in this connection, and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the deceased's family. Media coordinator Priyabrata Majhi said the residents of Raighar block in Nabarangpur district have been requested to extend full support to the hartal. Government and private institutions, shops, markets, transport, schools and colleges have been requested to support the bandh. He, however, added that emergency services will not be disrupted during the strike. The woman's body is expected to reach her native village Dumurimunda by midnight. Raighar IIC Raghunath Majhi said, 'Police are on alert for maintenance of law and order. Patrolling has been tightened and more police forces will be deployed in sensitive areas.'

The product is bioequivalent to Eli Lilly and company's Glucagon for Injection, 1 mg/vial, and is used in the treatment of severe hypoglycaemia in paediatric and adult patients with diabetes mellitus. It is also indicated as a diagnostic aid during radiologic examinations to temporarily inhibit gastrointestinal motility in adult patients. According to IQVIA MAT (June 2025) data, Glucagon for Injection USP, 1 mg/vial packaged in an emergency kit, had estimated annual sales of $122 million in the U.S. market.
