Work on Jeypore economic corridor to start soon: CM Majhi
On the second day of his visit to Koraput district, Majhi also inaugurated the 650-bed hospital at Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College built at a cost of Rs 280 crore.
Addressing a function on the occasion, the chief minister said the economic corridor will play a vital role in all-round development of Koraput district by boosting connectivity to different parts of the state. The expansion of the hospital of the medical college will be a boon for the people of the district and neighbouring region as they will no longer have to travel to other cities for availing quality treatment and health services. The new hospital will benefit the people of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and also the neighbouring areas of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said.
Announcing that all vacancies in medical and allied posts at the SLN MCH will be filled up soon, Majhi said a cancer hospital is also being built on an area of two acre adjacent to the hospital at a cost Rs 41.15 crore.
Emphasising focus of his government to provide best of healthcare in every district, the CM said there are 12 government medical colleges in the state at present and four more are coming up in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Nabarangpur districts.
He also said the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has greatly benefitted the people of the state with more than 3.46 crore covered under the scheme along with Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY). The government has already released Rs 900 crore in lieu of cashless treatment provided to the people in best of hospitals, he said.
Under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana, 8,644 senior citizens aged above 70 have received free treatment worth Rs 35.60 crore. In Koraput district alone, over three lakh AB-PMJAY and GJAY cards have been distributed, with 9,006 people enrolled under the senior citizens' scheme, he added.
The chief minister said four private hospitals in Koraput district are empanelled under the ABPMJAY-GJAY, enabling local access to cashless treatment.
Health and Family Welfare minister Mukesh Mahaling was present among others.

Shandil urges youth to stay away from drugs
Shimla: Health and family welfare minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd) on Wednesday administered an oath against drug abuse and illegal trafficking to the youth from various educational institutions under the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan' and listed various initiatives being taken by the state govt to make Himachal Pradesh drug-free. The minister urged the youth, women, officials, employees, and people of Himachal to stay aware of the harmful effects of drugs, take active part in the campaign, and show united commitment against drug abuse. He said the directorate of Empowerment of Scheduled Castes, OBCs, Minorities, and the Specially Abled (ESOMSA) was working with NITI Aayog, the national dependence treatment centre at AIIMS Delhi, and PGIMER Chandigarh to prepare a detailed state action plan for drug prevention. Action against drugs Shandil said the state govt had taken strict action against drugs as two bills were passed recently in the legislative assembly against the drug abuse and related crimes. These bills include provisions of death penalty, life imprisonment, fine up to Rs 10 lakh, confiscation of property, rehabilitation, preventive education, and livelihood support, he informed. Under the PIT NDPS Act, the Himachal Pradesh Police have seized illegal property worth Rs 42 crore, identified the property of 70 traffickers, and detained 44 notorious drug peddlers, the minister added. He further said a campaign was being actively run at the panchayat level to identify smugglers, and drug consumers. A special task force has been formed to focus on anti-drug operations, and 13 police stations have been notified for this purpose. De-addiction centres A 100-bed, fully equipped, modern de-addiction centre will be set up at Kotla Barog in Sirmaur district, said Shandil, adding that Rs 5.34 crore has already been approved for the project. He also informed that de-addiction and rehabilitation centres were already operational in the state – four for men in Kullu, Una, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts, and one for women run by the Red Cross Society in Kullu district. For counselling of the youth, 108 new 'Disha' centres have been set up in health institutions, and ASHA workers, doctors, and psychiatrists are also being specially trained for this purpose, the minister added. Health insurance company directed to reimburse Rs 3.42 lakh to customer
COIMBATORE: The district consumer disputes redressal commission has directed a private health insurance company to reimburse Rs 3.42 lakh to a customer for medical expenses incurred for a heart surgery along with Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony and deficiency in service. According to official sources, M Baskar Ilango of Kuniyamuthur took a health insurance policy through HDFC Bank in Feb 2020. The policy was renewed regularly, and the premium for the period from Feb 29, 2024 to Feb 28, 2025, was duly paid. Ilango was admitted to a private hospital with acute anterior wall myocardial infarction on Feb 28, 2024. He underwent a coronary angiogram on Feb 29 and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting on March 4, incurring hospital expenses of Rs 3.42 lakh. He submitted claim forms to the insurer on the day of admission. The insurer initially informed him that the claim was being processed but later rejected it, citing that he had been suffering from diabetes mellitus for five years and failed to disclose it.
