AAP slams demolition in Bhoomiheen camp, DDA defends action

New Delhi: A demolition drive was held at the Bhoomiheen camp in Kalkaji amid a heavy deployment of cops on Wednesday morning. Calling the demolition a "deliberate assault on the marginalised", AAP alleged that BJP govt defied its own chief minister Rekha Gupta's promise of "not a single jhuggi will be touched". Local MLA Atishi alleged that BJP was betraying the poor. "Just three days ago, CM Rekha Gupta claimed that not a single jhuggi would be demolished and no poor person's home would be touched. Yet, under the cover of heavy police presence, the entire Bhoomiheen camp was razed to the ground, displacing thousands of people and leaving them homeless on the streets," she said. Delhi Development Authority said the demolition was against ineligible dwellers encroaching upon five acres of its land. It stated that under the in situ slum rehabilitation project at Kalkaji, after applying the eligibility criteria as per DUSIB's rehabilitation and relocation policy of 2015, approved by the then Delhi govt, some residents were found to be eligible for rehabilitation and some were not. "As per policy, the households whose names appear in one of the voter lists of the years 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 (prior to 01.01.2015) and possess one of the 12 documents prescribed in the policy, like a passport, electricity bill, driving licence, or passbook issued by a public sector bank or post office, are eligible for alternative accommodation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo Their names should also appear in the voter list of the year of the survey," it added. Households using the jhuggi for commercial purposes, those with residents under 18 years of age, and those living on the upper floor without a separate ration card prior to 01.01.2015 do not qualify for alternative allotment, DDA further explained. A total of 1,862 eligible households of Bhoomiheen camp were rehabilitated to EWS flats in Kalkaji Extension between Nov 2022 and May 2023, said DDA. The project is located on a land of 3 hectares with a total construction cost of Rs 345 crore, excluding land cost. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised price of Rs 1.1 lakh as beneficiary contribution, it added. The ineligible dwellers were given an opportunity to file an appeal before the Appellate Authority, the land-owning agency said. DDA further claimed that most of the houses demolished on Wednesday were lying vacant. "344 jhuggi structures existed which were mostly vacant. There is no stay against demolition of these jhuggi structures," it said in a statement. BJP did not comment on the development.

State police see progress across units

1 2 Bhubaneswar: As the Mohan Majhi govt marks its first year in office on Thursday, the Odisha police has seen significant progress across several areas, including staff recruitment, equipment upgrades, technological improvements, training enhancement, digital forensics and counter-insurgency operations throughout the year, according to a booklet, titled '1 year many milestones' compiled by the information and public relations (I&PR) department. As per the govt booklet, at least 8,271 new posts were sanctioned in the home department to further strengthen the law and order situation in the state. According to police sources, of those 8,271 posts, at least 4176 are meant exclusively for the state police force across various police ranks. "Besides 2,500 new positions in the home guard division has been created. Additionally, 2,000 positions were established in the traffic division to handle urban traffic management across the state," the booklet read. The govt's priority to fortify the state police force was reaffirmed by the chief minister during inauguration of a new office building of the DCP here on Tuesday. "Our govt has accorded focus to strengthen Odisha police, which succeeded in maintaining law and order in the last one year. To improve the operational capabilities of police personnel, we have provided them with new vehicles and investigation kits. The force is being strengthened with additional human resources, infrastructure, technology and logistics," the chief minister said on the sidelines of an event here on Tuesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo The budgetary allocation for Odisha Police increased from Rs 5,031 crore during the previous govt in 2023-24 to Rs 5,578 crore in 2024-25, representing a 10.8% rise. The current fiscal saw a further increase of 26.6%, reaching Rs 7,063 crore. Considering the state's expanding industrial activities and security requirements at various industrial centres, Majhi recently announced the formation of an additional Odisha Industrial Security Force battalion. To strengthen anti-Maoist operations, Majhi announced in Jan a substantial increase in the monthly 'risk allowance' for Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, elevating it from Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. The SOG, established within Odisha Police in 2004, specialises in counter-terrorism and extremist operations. "Three new Odisha special security battalions have been raised to support anti-Maoist operations," a senior police officer said. Amid Indo-Pak tensions, govt enhanced Odisha police's readiness by establishing an anti-terrorism unit and acquiring two bulletproof armoured vehicles with light machine guns mounted on their roofs. The state police acquired advanced drones for the first time to enhance coastal security operations and counter potential maritime threats. "The govt has sanctioned about Rs 150 crore to strengthen the coastal security wing. At least 350 retired navy personnel have been engaged for coastal security. A command and control centre will soon be set up, adding teeth to our coastal security wing," the police officer said. Cybercrime investigation received priority attention during the past year. The govt announced 20 new cyber police stations while upgrading 14 existing ones. The police force underwent substantial modernisation during the last one year. Police stations received investigation equipment including laptops, smartphones, and hard disks to enhance investigative capabilities. For the first time about Rs 50 crore budget was allocated for officers' investigation expenses. "Each police station received new vehicles and motorcycles to ensure swift emergency response. Recently, 247 forensic officer positions were created to enhance the criminal justice system, in accordance with forensic evidence requirements outlined in the newly implemented criminal legislation," the senior police officer said.

Professional colleges plan to boycott counselling over pending fee reimbursement dues

1 2 3 Hyderabad: With fee reimbursement dues reaching Rs 7,500 crore, all professional college managements are considering boycotting the counselling for various Common Entrance Tests (CETs), including the EAPCET, ICET and LAWCET, and refusing to accept any 'zero fee' admissions for the 2025-26 academic year. The managements of professional colleges have formed a new association, the Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Education Institutions (FATHI), to advocate for their cause, demanding that the state clear the dues by Aug 15. The federation includes management from engineering, pharmacy, law, nursing, MBA, MCA and BEd colleges. "All professional colleges are on the verge of closure. We have not received any fee reimbursement in the last three years. If the state does not clear our dues immediately, we won't be able to survive. This is why we have decided not to accept any 'zero fee' admissions and to boycott counselling," said G Nagaiah, general secretary of FATHI. He added that the outstanding fees would total Rs 10,000 crore by next March. According to its members, the association is even considering legal action to recover the dues. "In a class of 60, at least 20 students will be from SC, ST and minority communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo They are all eligible for full reimbursement. The Centre released SC/ST and minority funds over the last three years, but we have not received even that amount. Is this not the diversion of funds?" asked K Ramadas from the pharmacy colleges' management association, who is also part of the federation. They stated that, even if the govt allocates seats to students who are eligible for full fee reimbursement, they will not accept their admission unless a student is willing to pay at least 50% of the annual fees before joining the course. Meanwhile, officials from the Telangana Council of Higher Education said that they had tried their best to resolve the issue over the last six months or so. "We tried through different forums. We even recommended that the state clear dues in phases. But nothing has been released to cover fee arrears to date. Now, it is up to the govt to decide, as we too are helpless," the official added.
