TCS layoffs: Why India's IT dream needs a wake-up call in the age of AI

Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) recent announcement that it will be laying off 12,000 employees, amounting to 2 per cent of its global workforce, has expectedly started causing significant hand-wringing about the impact of AI on India's labour market. The clarification from K Kirthivasan, the company's CEO, that the lay-offs are because of 'skill-mismatch' and not AI, however, is unlikely to quell growing unease within the country, as the IT sector has had an outsized impact on India's economic story. It employed just over five million people in 2024 but contributed to around 7 per cent of GDP and accounted for 50 per cent of India's services exports.
Unsurprisingly, therefore, the IT sector has traditionally been the most straightforward and sought-after path to upward economic mobility and prosperity for India's legions of engineering graduates, and any dip in the employment prospects of this sector is likely to have significant ripple effects on India's economy and politics. Coupled with several other more bombastic statements by global giants like Meta and Salesforce on the reduced need for entry-level engineers and a turbulent business outlook for India's IT sector, an anxiety-inducing cocktail is born. In this context, there are three key takeaways from TCS layoffs to keep in mind.
First, it is of course entirely likely that these layoffs are not caused by AI. Net hiring by India's IT giants has been going down for several quarters, partly to balance the aggressive hiring spree in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, and partly due to a more volatile global economy, which has reduced spending by potential clients. This slowdown in hiring is not limited to the IT sector. That said, there are also other emerging industries, particularly Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which now employ nearly 2 million, and the startup ecosystem, which are fast becoming attractive alternative employment pathway for young engineers. We are not even sure what the actual impact of AI on employment and labour force participation globally has been so far, so it might be a little premature to lay the blame for these cuts at AI's feet.
Second, this does not mean that AI will not have an impact on India's IT sector. Historically, our IT giants have based their offerings on India's labour cost advantage, relying on the hundreds of thousands of engineers who graduate every year to provide standardised, relatively low-skilled services mostly in support functions at a fraction of global costs, best exemplified by the fact that starting salaries in the IT industry have not changed in a decade. AI can already do nearly everything that fresh hires in the sector are expected to do, and if the cost structures allow, there is very little reason for IT companies to keep hiring tens of thousands of fresh graduates a year. It can be reasonably expected that net hiring in these companies will no longer reach the levels seen in the last couple of decades, and any excess workforce, the so-called 'bench' in IT HR parlance, will be systematically trimmed.
Third, the anxiety surrounding a single company's lay-off decision is indicative of a much larger issue in the Indian economy – the fact that quality employment opportunities have not kept pace with economic growth rates and the growing aspirations of India's youth. Low wage levels in the private sector and growing living costs have made India's middle class more precariously placed than ever before, indicated by the rapidly expanding use of personal debt for consumption and basic necessities.
The advent and increased use of AI will also change the nature of jobs that are likely to remain relevant. Demand, even within the IT space, is shifting from entry-level testing and support work to domain specialists in areas like cybersecurity, cloud computing, full-stack capabilities and AI itself. There is also growing demand for personnel in sectors like data centre management and chip design. While these jobs are likely to be high-paying, they will require significant investments in education and can never reach the employment numbers of the IT sector. With manufacturing not taking off as expected and the narrowing opportunities in IT, fresh graduates, particularly from Tier-II and Tier-III colleges, might increasingly feel bleak about their employment opportunities.
The anxiety around TCS layoffs should be seen in the larger context of the structural issues within the Indian economy. Mitigation of any potential negative fallout due to widespread AI adoption on an already stressed workforce will require a multipronged approach, including a rapid, affordable skilling programme, a complete overhaul of India's higher education system, and policy incentives to boost other sectors, particularly emerging areas like biotech, pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing. No longer can one sector take on the burden of upholding India's middle class and economic prospects the way that IT has in the past. More diversified, well-paying employment opportunities will only strengthen the Indian economy during an uncertain time.

Ever since first rolling out Meta AI in early 2023, Meta has been betting big on the chatbot, integrating it across its social media apps and even launching a standalone app. While Meta and other tech giants remain bullish on AI and its potential to transform how we interact online, not everyone is on board and some users would rather not have Meta's AI chatbot show up in their apps at all. Meta AI is the artificial intelligence chatbot by the tech giant that is present across all of its social media apps including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The chatbot competes directly with the likes of Google's Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude and is run on the company's Llama 3 model. While Meta AI has fallen behind the competition in recent months, the biggest selling point for the social media behemoth is that its AI can be summoned instantly across the world's most popular apps. In the last few months, Meta has only increased the number of Meta AI powered features on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. While there is a section of users who cannot get enough of these features, there are others who don't want any part of the AI carnage in their daily apps. If that wasn't enough, there was a privacy issue in June when Meta AI app's discover feed exposed the personal conversations with the chatbot on social media handles. Unfortunately, Meta is so expansively present across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook that it isn't currently possible to cut it out of these apps entirely, but we can attempt to do the next best thing which is to limit the interaction with the AI chatbot. In order to limit the interactions with Meta AI on Instagram, go to your chats and search for Meta AI. Click on the 'i' icon and then tap on 'Mute' and switch it to 'Until I change it'. Similarly, to limit the interactions with Meta AI on WhatsApp, open the Meta AI chat and mute notifications for chat while choosing the 'always' option to never receive a notification for Meta AI chat. Meanwhile, if you want to limit Meta AI in group chats there is currently only one option available, which is to turn on 'advanced chat privacy' found in the group settings. However, turning this feature on would also mean that users in the group won't be able to save any media to their devices. On Facebook, one can similarly mute Meta AI chat as done on Instagram. There is also an option to open the basic Facebook mobile version in order to see minimal AI features on the app.

Meta just made one of the boldest moves yet in the fierce race for AI supremacy by offering a $250 million compensation package to a 24-year-old artificial intelligence researcher. Matt Deitke, who recently left his PhD program in computer science at the University of Washington, was initially offered about $125 million over four years to join Meta, according to The New York Times. However, when he turned it down, Mark Zuckerberg personally met with Deitke and doubled the offer to around $250 million. 'When computer scientists are paid like professional athletes, we have reached the climax of the 'Revenge of the Nerds!'' MIT economist David Autor told the New York Post. After leaving academia, Deitke worked at Seattle's Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, where he led the creation of Molmo, a chatbot designed to interpret not just text, but also images and audio. Then in late 2023, Deitke co-founded Vercept, a startup focused on autonomous AI agents capable of navigating and executing tasks online. The company, though just 10 people strong, secured $16.5 million in funding from investors including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. The 24-year-old also gained recognition in the research community after receiving an Outstanding Paper Award at NeurIPS 2022. Meta's race to corner AI excellence Meta's push to recruit Deitke is part of a hiring spree, with the company reportedly spending more than $1 billion to build out its AI talent. It recently hired Ruoming Pang, who previously led Apple's AI models team, in a package said to be worth more than $200 million. Now, imagine if ChatGPT exposed users' personal conversations on Google and made them available for the world to read. Sounds wild, but that is exactly what happened. In a surprising incident, thousands of private ChatGPT conversations showed up in Google search results. Some of these chats included personal topics like mental health, job stress, and relationship issues shared with the AI chatbot. ChatGPT Leak Data: How Did This Happen? OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, had a feature that let users share their chats using a share button. When someone clicked it and chose 'create link,' ChatGPT made a URL that could be shared with others. There was also an option called 'Make this chat discoverable.' If this was turned on, search engines like Google could show those chat links in public search results. Many users didn't understand this and turned it on by mistake, thinking it was needed to share chats with friends, without realizing it could make their chats public. The issue was first reported by Fast Company. They found that around 4,500 ChatGPT links had been indexed by Google. While many of these chats were harmless, some revealed deeply personal and sensitive details shared by users—things they never expected the world to see. ChatGPT Leak Data: What Open AI Responded OpenAI fixed the privacy issue by removing the "discoverable" option from the Share window. An OpenAI employee said it was a short lived experiment that made it too easy to share chats by mistake. Now, OpenAI's FAQ clearly says that shared chats are not public unless users choose to make them discoverable. ChatGPT Leak Data: What Users Should Do Step 1: Open ChatGPT and go to Settings. Step 2: Tap on Data Controls from the menu. Step 3: Click on Manage next to the Shared Links option. Step 4: You will now see a list of all shared chats. From here, you can delete any links you no longer want to keep public. No Legal Privacy For ChatGPT Users Adding further, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that users should not expect legal privacy when using ChatGPT. Since there are no clear laws or rules about AI chats yet. However, if a legal case ever comes up, OpenAI could be required to hand over some of your most sensitive chats.
