Calgary police to deploy enhanced security measures during busy street festival season
Calgary Police Service (CPS) say they'll be beefing up security at street festivals this summer. CPS deputy Insp. Jordan Nolan tells Global News the new measures are in response to incidents where vehicles have been used to drive into crowds.
'Given recent events that have happened across the county and in other parts of the world, we are taking measures to ensure things like the Lilac Festival will see enhanced safety measures,' explained Nolan.

Nolan wasn't able to share what those security measures included but says for the 100,000 people who are expected to attend the Lilac Festival on Sunday, he says increased security won't be what people focus on.
'Not only are we ensuring that the event is safe, but also that people can enjoy it without being impeded by those measures,' Nolan said. 'You'll probably see it at most events that are coming up. Just as things change, as events around the world change, and we will adapt and evolve and change our practices as well.'

Pride flag-raising ceremony in Powell River postponed due to vandalism
Pride month is underway, but in Powell River, B.C., at least one scheduled Pride event had to be postponed due to vandalism. The Pride flag was due to be raised at Powell River City Hall on Monday — an event that's been rescheduled after someone cut the ropes and rigging from the city flagpole over the weekend. She added that she hopes it also doesn't discourage people from attending their events. 'We are not going to lose hope, we are definitely going to keep our events and be out there even more visibly than we would have been before,' she said. Surrey home shot at twice in possible extortion case, latest captured on camera
Extraordinary security measures are in place at home in Surrey's Panorama Ridge neighbourhood. Despite a high-tech police surveillance system and an officer stationed outside the home, the property has been shot at twice in the past few weeks. The Surrey Police Service said they are investigating the latest incident as a case of possible extortion. The shooting was caught on a surveillance camera. The suspect in the shooting on May 25 can clearly be seen walking down the street armed with two handguns. He unloads dozens of shots directly into the home on Coulthard Road. This is the second time this home has been shot at, police said. The second shots fired incident happened after the Surrey Police Service installed surveillance cameras following a shooting 12 days earlier. At this point, Surrey police are not linking the two incidents but investigators are working closely with teams across the country trying to determine any connections. 'There's both regional task forces, there's national task forces,' Houghton said. 'Detectives are talking to each other across the country every week as are intelligence officers and analysts trying to figure out whether or not there may be any connections at all between any of the incidents.' 'Individuals who are the ones pulling the triggers behind these incidents, they have no regard for our safety, anyone's safety,' Houghton said. 'They pull the trigger with no regard for anyone who may get hurt.'

Assault charges laid in attack on Langley woman
A B.C. man has been charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm, after a woman was attacked in Langley. It happened in the 20100 block of Fraser Highway at about 6:17 a.m. Sunday. 'Our officers immediately responded to the area and located a victim who was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local area hospital,' Langley RCMP Sgt.
