Five beauty hacks to look better during a heatwave
The mini heatwave over the next few days will see some parts of the UK reach temperatures of 28 degrees, making it the warmest April in Britain in seven years.
This means, of course, being extra diligent with sun protection. (SPF is not just for holidays!) But while your mind may be preoccupied with the thought of a new pair of sandals for the warmer weather, think also of the beauty implications of the heat. They are not desirable, for the most part: sweaty, shiny skin and frizzy hair come to mind.
Fear not. A couple of key weatherproofing products will help see you through the mini heatwave.
Heat-proof make-up
As soon as the weather warms up, we need to rethink our base makeup. Ditch your usual foundation and apply concealer where you need it with a light translucent powder over the t-zone if you need it. By Terry's Hyaluronic Pressed Hydra-Powder is a best-seller for a reason. It hydrates the skin while reducing shine, so it is perfect for midlife skin.
It might be good to switch to a more matte formula on the lips rather than anything too shiny. The Bisou Balms by Violette FR work really well to impart a powdery hint of colour on the lips without feeling too dry. The brand's latest shade, Mon Cheri, is a suits-everyone nude-brown.
And of course, eyelashes will benefit from a waterproof mascara in the heat to avoid panda eyes. A really good option for a waterproof mascara is the Maybelline Lash Sensation Sky High Waterproof mascara. However, if you'd prefer not to use a waterproof formula, try a tubing mascara instead. These humid-proof heroes create little tubes around the lashes to add volume and length, without going crusty or flaky. Once you're ready to remove the mascara, you simply 'roll' the tubes away with warm water. The Unlocked Instant Mascara by Hourglass is one of the best around.
Anti-shine essentials
Start thinking about keeping your skin cool from the moment you put on your moisturiser. If you are prone to oily skin, try switching to a lighter moisturiser, such as the Light Moisturiser by Skin Rocks, £56. (As an added bonus, this cream is available in fragrance and fragrance-free formulas.) Next, find a UV protector and make-up primer in one: Murad Oil And Pore Control Mattifier SPF45 PA++++, protects, mattifies and keeps your make-up place.
While blotting papers have been around for decades, they really do help to keep shine at bay. The Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers by Tatcha are highly effective and slim enough to slot into your purse.
Cooling facial spritz
If you really feel the heat, a cooling face spritz is a saviour. Not only will they freshen up the skin, they will also add moisture back into the skin (excessive sweating can leave the skin feeling dehydrated). We love the Spots and Stripes Refreshing Face Mist or the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra 8 Face Mist.
Heat-busting hair
'A ponytail is always good for a heatwave because it keeps you cool,' says Paul Percival, co-founder of Percy & Reed. 'To keep the look modern, just keep the pony quite low, and give it a slightly wet texture if you can (try Percy & Reed's Session Styling Define & Hold Finishing Cream).
'Another tip is to give your hair a cold rinse post-shampoo, not just to keep you cool but to shut the hair cuticle and help prevent hot-weather frizz,' he adds. To combat greasy roots, a dry shampoo works wonders in warmer temperatures. We love Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo & Volume which is available at supermarkets and high street chemists.
Fight the frizz-factor
If high humidity levels are sending your follicles into a mushroom-shaped frenzy, try a portable product to help. The Briogeo Style + Treat Yuzu + Plum Oil Sleek Stick looks like a roll-on deodorant - but that's where the similarities end. It is fantastic for smoothing flyaways and keeping your style looking smooth and slick.

It's form-fitting silhouette accentuates your curves, while the sweetheart neckline and double strap detail add a dash of sophistication. It is simply perfect for a cocktail party or a night at the club, and designed to turn heads - at only a fraction of the price. The dress is currently only available in Chocolate and Rose. But the best part is that the Boohoo dress is currently on sale for just £20 - a huge difference to The HourGlass dress which costs £169 - giving you a massive saving of just under £150. But if you still feel like splashing out for a very special occasion you better be quick because House of CB say their bandage Collection is a limited edition. Whichever you choose - team yours with big hair, high heels, bold lip – and you'll feel like a million dollars. Meanwhile, a popular supermarket has launched a £20 dupe of the £11k Birkin bags that Victoria Beckham & Olivia Attwood love – and it comes in 2 colours. And if you're not willing to fork out for a Labubu - which can fetch a whopping £70 online - there's a budget-friendly alternative you can get in your local B&M. The cost of hotels and flights is already expensive, so we know you want to save cash when it comes to luggage too. Primark adds brand new Sol De Janeiro dupes to its beauty aisles and they're perfect for keeping you smelling sweet on holiday too And people are rushing to Tesco to pick up their new suitcase & it's a dupe of pricey Rimowa but more than £1,000 cheaper. We also have the perfect Crocs dupe for your summer- as a discount supermarket's Summer Clogs sell for a mere £3.99. This is an eye-watering £46 less than what shoppers would find on the Crocs website. Plus, Aldi's new Japanese-inspired skincare brand is said to be a dupe of Tatcha – it's 90% cheaper but was it as good? How to look chic on a budget Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger, and beauty journalist Samantha Silver revealed how you can make your outfits elevated without spending hundreds of pounds. Don't ever spend on designer denim: River Island ''always has such a great selection of fashion-forward jeans that follow the current trends''. The high street retailer offers a great range of sizes to fit UK 6 - UK 18, and three leg lengths - and prices start from an affordable £25. There are no rules for jewels: ''Pick up something at a car boot sale, or charity shop, scroll on Vinted & eBay, snap up something from the clothing section in your local supermarket when doing the food shop or check out high street clothing stores.'' Don't forget the pre-loved sites: With a rising number of second-hand sites, such as Vinted and Depop, there's no excuse for not buying - or selling - pre-loved garments. Gemma, for instance, has managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunnies for a mere £17. And finally, our Beauty editor tested Aldi's 7 new beauty buys all for under £5. A cult Charlotte Tilbury dupe is back but read here to find her favourite finds.

‘I'm blown away with how good this tinted moisturiser makes my skin feel'
I've tried out lots of tinted moisturisers recently, and I thought I'd found a favourite – but this new launch trumps them all for hydration and a radiant finish With the weather getting warmer, this spring I've been on a mission to find one of the best tinted moisturisers and skin tints to replace my full coverage foundation with. I've already found some brilliant new ones, including Clarins, Hourglass and Laura Mercier, but this newest one I've tried has immediately taken the top spot. Having previously tried Jones Road's viral What The Foundation – which received mixed reviews – I was keen to see how the latest base product by the skincare and make-up brand (which was founded by Bobbi Brown) would fare. Jones Road is known for its natural-looking, easy-to-use products, and Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer is no exception – and I'd go as far as to say that it's the best tinted moisturiser I've ever tried. Priced at £44, Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer comes in 16 shades (a good range for a sheer face base), is non-comedogenic (meaning it won't block pores) and contains sodium hyaluronate, a humectant with molecules even smaller than hyaluronic acid for deep hydration. I picked the shade Ivory, which was the perfect match for me, although the shades are so flexible that you could probably find two or three that would suit you. It goes on like an absolute dream. I normally prefer to use a make-up brush to apply any type of foundation or face base but this goes on so well with fingers, without any smears or patches; it's totally seamless. The coverage is very sheer – lighter, I'd say, than the Clarins one – so it's not one for you if you need to cover prominent redness or marks (or you'll need to use a good concealer over the top), but it leaves the most lovely dewy finish to the skin – really natural, healthy and just subtly perfected. The two things that most impressed me though were, firstly, how well it lasted it lasted. I usually find that even the most expensive skin tints and tinted moisturisers turn patch y on my skin as the day goes on and the 'hydrating' element of the formula wears off. Not this Jones Road one though – it stays feeling fresh all day. I also couldn't believe how soft and smooth it made my skin look and feel; I honestly couldn't stop touching my face all day. Unlike the brand's What The Foundation, however, it's not greasy or slippy at all, and other make-up also sat beautifully on top of it. Of course, there may be other factors at play as to why I like how this looks on my skin. I'm really happy with my skincare routine at the moment – a simple one featuring Teresa Tarmey Cleanser, £42, a brilliant new vitamin C serum that I'm not allowed to reveal yet, and Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral SKINSCREEN, £38. I've also been diligently using my ZIIP Halo facial toning device most mornings, which I think is really making a difference. If you like the sound of a lightweight, light coverage tinted moisturiser but have never quite found the right one for you, however, I urge you to give this Jones Road one a try.
