MMEA detains Vietnamese fishing boat with 300kg of catch
KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kelantan have detained a Vietnamese fishing vessel carrying 300 kilograms of seafood for allegedly encroaching on national waters off Tok Bali.
State MMEA director Maritime Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi said the boat was intercepted during a routine patrol on Friday, approximately 105 nautical miles from the Tok Bali estuary.
He added that the vessel was spotted behaving suspiciously and attempted to flee towards international waters before being stopped by an enforcement vessel.
'Our officers carried out a force boarding to stop the boat and secure the area in the interest of national maritime security,' he said in a statement today.
Five crew members, including the captain, all believed to be Vietnamese nationals aged between 28 and 47, were found on board.
The vessel also carried navigation equipment, communication devices and 300 litres of diesel. The total value of the seized assets, including the catch, is estimated at nearly RM100,000.
Preliminary investigations suggest the vessel was engaged in illegal fishing activities and is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Fisheries Act 1985 for operating without valid permits.
Under Section 16(3) of the same act, the captain also faces action for failing to declare the vessel's flag, route and destination.
All five crew members are also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid identification documents.
Erwan said the MMEA remains firm against maritime encroachment and illegal fishing in Malaysian waters.

Explained: What we know about the Port Klang boat capsize tragedy
KLANG - A leisure boat trip ended in tragedy on June 6, after a boat carrying six individuals capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, leaving five people dead, including a young child. Only one survivor was rescued. The incident occurred around 5pm when the boat, which was being test-driven by its owner, overturned. North Klang District Police Chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said none of the passengers were believed to have been wearing life jackets, which made the search and rescue efforts even more challenging. "Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills," he told reporters on June 7. Survivor Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, recounted the terrifying moment the boat overturned during a U-turn about 30 minutes after departing from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). "The incident happened very quickly when the relatively fast-moving boat suddenly overturned and in less than 10 seconds, water had entered all compartments of the boat," he said. Chang managed to swim out and cling to the overturned boat, screaming for help. After about five minutes, another boat approached and rescued him. Rescue teams from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Marine Police and Fire and Rescue Department were activated at 5.16pm and began search operations in the area. By Saturday evening, the bodies of three individuals were recovered: three-year-old Darren Gan, the son of the missing couple; Cheu Son Hin, 50 and Fong Yong Sen, 29. The bodies were found in the front compartment of the capsized boat. Two individuals remained missing: Gan Hon Tat, 32 and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. On June 8, efforts continued with divers working to partially refloat the boat to inspect its interior. The search for the missing couple ended on the morning of June 8, when MMEA confirmed that their bodies were found around 7.45am, about 0.1 nautical mile from the National Hydrographic Centre near North Port, Port Klang. "The MMEA's vessel KD Danga found the floating bodies before the Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived to help take their remains ashore," said Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Enforcement and Excise Unit operations officer of Selangor Maritime Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali. The bodies were taken to Shah Alam Hospital for autopsy and formal identification. Malaysia Bus Crash Kills at Least 15, Mostly Students
Thirteen victims died at the scene near the town of Gerik, on the busy East-West Highway near the Thai border, while two died in hospital, Arab News reported. The accident is the deadliest in more than a decade on Malaysias hazardous roads. It looked like the bus had lost control and hit the (minivan) from behind, Perak State Police Chief Hisam Nordin said. Images from the scene taken by the fire and rescue department showed a green bus overturned on its right side with a smashed rear end cover, while the red minivan had slid into a ditch, with its windows blown out. Some victims managed to get out on their own, some victims were thrown out while others were still (trapped) in the bus, the Perak state disaster management authority said in a statement. Rescuers had to use a hydraulic cutter to free people from the bus. The death toll included 14 students from the Sultan Idris Education University, while the last victim was a bus attendant, the emergency services said. Thirty-three others were injured, with seven in critical condition taken to hospital, it added. Most of the victims were aged between 21 and 23. They were traveling from the town of Jerteh in northeastern Malaysia when the accident happened shortly after 1:00 am (1700 GMT on Sunday). Police Chief Hisam said officers were investigating whether the crash involved human negligence or if it was a technical issue. A witness told the New Straits Times it was a chaotic scene with students screaming and crying for help. They were pinned between the wreckage, the witness, identified as Razali, told the paper. Malaysias Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered the Higher Education Ministry to help the victims families and said he and his wife Azizah were deeply saddened by the tragedy. Heartbreaking disasters like these that are repeated often should be a lesson to all to be careful and not to rush, Anwar wrote on Facebook. Your lives are too precious and cant be replaced, he added. Malaysia has a high rate of traffic accidents, with an average of 18 people killed on the roads each day, according to government figures. The East-West Highway, which connects the two seaboards of the Malaysian peninsula, is plagued by accidents, with frequent collisions between animals and vehicles. Malaysia's worst bus disaster happened in 2013 when an express bus plunged down a ravine northeast of Kuala Lumpur, killing 37.
