Dansby Swanson delivers as the Chicago Cubs edge the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3
CHICAGO (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday in the rubber game of the weekend series. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ each had two hits for Chicago, which had dropped four of five before a 3-1 victory Saturday. Next up is a big five-game series against major league-leading Milwaukee, beginning with a split doubleheader Monday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are eight games back of the Brewers in the NL Central. Chicago had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth when Isaac Mattson (3-2) issued an intentional walk to Nico Hoerner. Swanson followed with a flyball to right, driving in Carson Kelly. Caleb Thielbar (3-3) got one out for the win, and Andrew Kittredge pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save. Pittsburgh trailed 2-1 before Joey Bart lined a two-run double into the corner in left in the sixth. Ronny Simon's two-out single put runners on the corners, but Ben Brown escaped the jam when Spencer Horwitz bounced to second. Chicago tied it at 3 on Carson Kelly's bloop single in the bottom half, driving in Seiya Suzuki. The Cubs had the bases loaded with two down, but Swanson flied to right for the final out of the inning. Key moment The Pirates wasted a prime scoring opportunity in the eighth. Batting with a runner on third and one out, Bart struck out swinging against Brown. Isiah Kiner-Falefa then walked before Thielbar fanned Ronny Simon for the final out of the inning. Key stat The Pirates went 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Up next Pirates: RHP Paul Skenes (7-9, 2.13 ERA) starts Monday night in the opener of a three-game series against Toronto. RHP Kevin Gausman (8-9, 3.79 ERA) goes for the AL East leaders. Cubs: There has been no announcement from the Cubs on their rotation for the Brewers series, but RHP Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44 ERA) is expected to come off the injured list and start one of the games. ___ AP MLB:

Regina Red Sox win WCBL championship after Saturday win against Sylvan Lake Gulls
The Regina Red Sox are the new Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) champions after a 5-4 win against the Sylvan Lake Gulls on Saturday night. This is the first time since 2012 that the Red Sox have won the WCBL championship, and the first time since 2017 that the title has gone to a Saskatchewan-based team. The game capped off a tumultuous season for the Red Sox. In June, Red Sox player Jesse Lubiniecky was killed in a car accident in the United States, and the team overcame losing several more players over the course of July. "Our guys were resilient all year. We started the season on a bit of a tragic note," said Red Sox president Gary Brotzel. "It was tough for the boys, and we lost 16 players in July for various reasons, injury, pro opportunities, just a variety of reasons and we kind of retooled in two weeks, brought in some guys to fill the holes." "The 23 that we had late in the season pulled it together and we were able to win the championship." Saturday's victory was secured in the seventh inning of the game, when Red Sox player Rafael Jackson scored a two-run single. The 5-4 win was the team's second in a best-of-three series. Nevertheless, there wasn't much time to celebrate, said Brotzel. Shortly after the win the team promptly got on their bus and drove through the night to arrive back in Regina by Sunday morning. Many of the players have already gone their separate ways, he said, returning to school and other work responsibilities. The win also heralds a new era for the team, which will be sold to Queen City Sports & Entertainment Group to become a privately-held franchise starting in October. Queen City Sports also owns the Regina Pats. "I'm happy that they can take over the team on a high note. I think we've handed them a perfect marketing slogan for next year," said Brotzel.

Alec Bohm homers in his return as the Phillies defeat the Nationals, 11-9
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alec Bohm hit a three-run home run in his return from the injured list, Nick Castellanos also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 11-9 on Sunday to earn a four-game series split. Right-hander Aaron Nola also returned from the injured list to give up six runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Phillies in his first big league appearance since May 14. NL East-leading Philadelphia had dropped four of its last five games. Paul DeJong hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning for last-place Washington, which fell to 18-36 in day games. Bohm had two hits in his first game since July 18, including a fourth-inning single that chased reliever PJ Poulin (0-1). Castellanos doubled off Orlando Ribalta, and Weston Wilson followed with a two-run single to make it 8-6. Tanner Banks (5-2) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Jhoan Duran, pitching for the first time since taking a line drive off his ankle Friday, got the last two outs for his 21st save and fifth with the Phillies. Philadelphia scored an unearned run in the first and then capitalized when José Tena's relay for a potential inning-ending double play in the second sailed out of play. The Phillies collected three consecutive singles before Bohm blasted Washington starter Mitchell Parker's last pitch into the visitors' bullpen in left. Parker allowed six runs — five earned — in 1 2/3 innings. Nola retired seven of the first eight batters he faced before the next seven reached safely. His outing ended on Tena's double to tie it. Key moment Duran struck out pinch hitter James Wood on a 101 mph fastball with one on to end the game. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Since going 3-1 with a 1.39 ERA in his first five starts, Parker is 4-12 with a 7.30 ERA in his last 20 outings. Up next Philadelphia has not announced its pitching plans for Monday's series opener at home against Seattle. Washington continues its homestand Tuesday when RHP Jake Irvin (8-7, 5.14 ERA) faces the New York Mets. ___ AP MLB:
