19.45L cases pending cases in district courts till May

Time of India4 hours ago

Cuttack: Subordinate courts in the state continue to witness a rise in pending cases, despite improved efforts in disposal. Till May 31, a staggering 19.45 lakh cases remain pending across various district courts — marking an increase of 25,008 from Jan 1.
The rise occurred in spite of a significant improvement in case clearance rate (CCR), which climbed from 77.17% in Jan to 100.33% in May, with March also recording 103.07%. The lowest clearance was recorded in April at 77.11%. The average CCR for the five-month period stood at 88.51%, according to an updated report released by the Orissa high court.
The spike is attributed to a sharp rise in institution of new cases, coupled with shortage of judicial staff and infrastructure.
Currently, 204 judicial posts are vacant, significantly impacting the efficiency of the judiciary. While the sanctioned strength of judicial officers stands at 1,041, the working strength is 837.
Out of the total 19.45 lakh pending cases, 16.33 lakh are criminal, while 3.12 lakh are civil. The sharp rise in criminal case registration is partly due to the institution of 18,820 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act, triggered by automated challans based on CCTV surveillance footage.

In terms of case disposal, 48,132 cases were resolved in May, up from 32,761 in Jan. However, new case filings also increased — from 42,453 in Jan to 47,969 in May.
District-wise data revealed that Khurda tops the list with 2.10 lakh pending cases, followed closely by Cuttack (2.01 lakh), Balasore (1.34 lakh), and Jajpur (1.02 lakh). Other districts with high pendency include Ganjam (1 lakh), Sundargarh (1 lakh), Bhadrak (98,627) and Angul (91,127).
Legal experts and court officials emphasised the urgent need for filling vacant judicial posts, establishing more courts and adopting technological reforms to ease the mounting pressure on the judicial machinery.

BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile

Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court. Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings. The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction. Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. "At a crucial stage in the process, the officials helped the club management by issuing a notice without filing a caveat, allowing them to easily obtain a stay," alleged Kongali. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The law officer defended the move, stating that efforts are underway to vacate the stay in upcoming hearings. A final 24-hour notice will be issued on Wednesday, following which seizure proceedings will be initiated. Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait suggested exploring a one-time settlement with the company, but officials responded that such an option was no longer available under current rules.
