Investigation ongoing after teen shot, killed in St. James Parish
According to the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office, at 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 6, deputies were called to the 3000 block of Highway 642 in Paulina, on a report of a 16-year-old shot in the area.

The caller reportedly told deputies that they heard a vehicle speed off after.
Deputies arrived and found the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They began life saving efforts until EMS arrived and took him to a hospital.
At 9:42 p.m., the teen was pronounced dead.

Due to the victim's age, the teen's identity has not been released.

Two women arrested for Culver City shooting, stealing e-bike
Two women were arrested for allegedly shooting another woman then stealing her electrical bike in Culver City on Friday. Police said that the incident happened on Aug. 1 at around 1 a.m., somewhere in the 4000 block of Sepulveda Boulevard near Washington Place, said a news release from the Culver City Police Department. Upon arrival, officers began to investigate the circumstances surrounding a shooting that left a woman with a gunshot wound to the left forearm. "Officers immediately rendered aid, applying a tourniquet to control heavy bleeding until Culver City Fire Department personnel arrived," said CCPD's news release. "The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries." Police say that the woman was shot after she resisted a group of suspect who attempted to take her e-bike. By the time police arrived, the suspects had all fled. "Culver City Police Department investigators immediately launched an investigation and, with the assistance of the department's automated license plate reader system, quickly identified the suspect vehicle and its driver," said the CCPD release. They identified the driver as 21-year-old Navya Joy Mackey. She was arrested when officers pulled her over on Aug. 6. While still investigating the incident, detectives identified the shooter as 25-year-old Los Angeles woman Nya Cimone White. "After narrowing White's location on Aug. 14, 2025, emergency response team personnel, a crisis negotiation team and special enforcement team officers served a search warrant and arrest warrant," CCPD's release said. She was taken into custody without incident and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. She remains behind bars in lieu of $2 million bail. While searching White's apartment, police said they found two assault rifles with high-capacity magazines, .40-caliber and 9mm ammunition, high-capacity pistol magazines and approximately one kilogram of a substance they believed to be cocaine. BBC calls in police to investigate Strictly Come Dancing
The BBC has asked the police to investigate Strictly Come Dancing amid fresh allegations, according to reports, after claims two of its stars used cocaine. The Sun On Sunday reported that the corporation has alerted the Metropolitan Police to new allegations about the hit dance competition show, the details of which it does not specify. A BBC spokesperson said on Saturday the corporation does not comment on police investigations. It comes after reports in The Sun earlier this month alleged two Strictly cast members' drug use was discussed on the BBC dancing show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation. The scandal-hit show was also the subject of a review in 2024, when the BBC looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare. New Orleans mayor indicted for fraud over police relationship
Aug. 16 (UPI) -- New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell is facing federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges after being indicted this week along with a former member of her security detail. Cantrell and retired New Orleans Police Department officer Jeffrey Vappie were both indicted for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and other charges after Vappie was allegedly paid for official duty while the two were engaged in "personal activities," according to a statement issued by the Justice Department. Authorities contend the two began a relationship in 2021, during which time Vappie was paid as an on-duty member of Cantrell's personal security team. Vappie retired in 2004. "They embarked on a scheme to defraud the City of New Orleans and NOPD by exploiting Vappie's job and Cantrell's authority as Mayor to have the City and NOPD pay Vappie's salary and expenses during times Vappie claimed to be on duty but when the was actually engaged in personal activities, often with Cantrell," the Justice Department indictment reads. The allegations contend Vappie and Cantrell's activities extended to out-of-state trips. Cantrell allegedly shifted policy and started bringing members of her Executive Protection Unit on the out-of-state trips around five months after Vappie joined the EPU. "Cantrell said she would 'make it happen' to have Vappie accompany her on a three-day trip to Washington, D.C., a trip that they both agreed that they 'needed,'" the Justice Department statement reads. The City of New Orleans was billed over $70,000 on Vappie's behalf for the three-day trip. The couple also allegedly used a city-owned apartment during their relationship. Cantrell was elected in 2018 after serving as a Member of the New Orleans City Council, making her the first female mayor in the city's history. Cantrell has not commented publicly on the allegations. Police say the pair tried to hide the affair and have recovered thousands of texts and pictures from the What'sApp messaging platform. Both are charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Vappie also faces twelve counts of wire fraud. Cantrell is also named in six of the latter charges.
