
Punchestown Racing bosses share how much drink will be consumed this week
The Kildare racecourse will open its turnstiles to more than 100,000 horse racing fans when the jump season kicks off on Tuesday until Saturday, May 3.
Racing organisers have revealed that 17,000 hospitality guests from 806 companies - including 164 from the UK - will enjoy seasonal menus crafted by a 68-strong team of chefs, supported by over 760 hospitality staff.
Three and a half tonnes of fresh vegetables, 60 kilos of artisan cheeses, and 15,000 exquisite canapés and desserts will be served across the five days.
A team of almost 300 bar staff will pour an estimated 132,000 pints, measure 20,000 shorts and fill 8,000 champagne glasses.
Punchestown CEO Conor O'Neill said: "There is something really special about the buzz ahead of this year's Punchestown Festival. It's even more than the brilliant achievements by our horses, jockeys, owners and trainers throughout the season.
'It's the local and national enthusiasm and pride that are reflected not only in bookings and sales but in requests for information, signage, inquiries about how they get involved.
'People Make Punchestown and there is a great appetite and goodwill for the event this year even more than previous. Combine this with a forecast that we can only wish for and we are in for a magic week,' he added.
Style lovers will once again flock to the Bollinger Best Dressed Competition, open to all, taking place over the first four days and culminating in the grand final on Ladies Day, Friday May 2. Fresh for 2025 is the sustainable theme of Something Old/Something New focusing on conscious fashion choices.
New to the Style Council judges are multi-award winning sustainable designer Aoife McNamara and acclaimed stylist Isabel Gleeson.
Further additions include the Bollinger Concierge marquee where Kildare-based beauty brand Ayu will have a host of professional make-up artists offering make-up top-up and professional advice.
Vision Ireland will have specially curated rails of pre-loved designer garments to showcase just how stylish sustainable fashion can be.
Organisers are anticipating over 100,000 visitors across five spectacular days, with festival fans traveling from across Ireland, the UK, Italy, United States and even Australia to be part of this world-class celebration of sport and culture at the home of Irish jump racing.
Across 40 races, featuring 12 Grade 1 contests and €3.5 million in prize money, the Punchestown Festival once again delivers the very best in jump racing.
All indications are that major showdowns are guaranteed with old rivals, young pretenders and redemption missions on the cards.
The opening day features a massive clash between Cheltenham heroes Marine Nationale and J.P. McManus's Fact To File. The Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup will see superstar Galopin Des Champs take on a challenge from the impressive Spillane's Tower whilst Friday's Boodles Champion Hurdle is being billed as the race of the season with Constitution Hill confirmed to meet State Man and Golden Ace amongst others.
Headlining the action is an incredible line-up of training and riding talent including the unstoppable Irish and recently crowned British champion trainer Willie Mullins along with his son, Grand National winning rider Patrick Mullins, champion jockey elect Paul Townend, top trainers Gordon Elliott and Henry de Bromhead, Cheltenham Gold Cup winning trainer Gavin Cromwell and the ever popular Rachael Blackmore among those in action.
What is particularly evident at the entry stage is the significant increase in UK trained runners at the festival with numbers returning to the heights last seen in 2008.
Festival friends and regulars Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Jonjo O'Neill, Harry Derham and Anthony Honeyball are joined by new names and faces to sustain the visitor involvement for the future.
The UK contribution is integral to the festival as it not only generates vastly increased interest and TV viewer numbers from across the Irish sea but also each horse running brings with them owners, trainers, jockeys, grooms and associated entourages that require accommodation, hospitality and entertainment in the locality.
Over 20% of the festival attendance hail from outside of Ireland so the event is a major contributor to the Kildare tourism numbers and campaign.
The track team have prepared, mowed, aerated, fed and watered over 170 acres of racing ground or the equivalent of around 42 Croke Park pitches.
The main team of five men have crafted 330 metres of hand filled steeplechase fence, 180 sections of handmade hurdles and erected just under 10 kilometres of white racing rail all to provide what is essentially a fresh racetrack each of the five days

'Preferred bidder' found for MV Matthew berthed in Cork Harbour
Drug trafficking cargo ship the MV Matthew has cost the State almost €10m in maintenance, crewing, and berthing fees since it was intercepted in 2023. A buyer has been found for the drug trafficking ship, and the Revenue Commissioners are engaging with Panamanian authorities to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. The MV Matthew, a Panamanian-registered ship, was at the centre of the largest cocaine seizure in the history of the State. Eight men were sentenced to a combined 129 years in prison in July for their role in the drug trafficking operation in which some €157m worth of cocaine was seized. The MV Matthew, owned by a Dubai-based company, was boarded at gunpoint by Ireland's elite army ranger wing in rough seas off the Cork coast in September 2023. Eight men from the 21-person crew were ultimately charged with drug trafficking offences. The ship, which has since been berthed in Cork Harbour, has been costing an average of €120,000 each week to maintain. However, Revenue has confirmed that 'a preferred bidder has been identified' for the MV Matthew. 'Revenue is engaging with the Panamanian authorities to ensure compliance with maritime legislation and regulations that govern the disposal of the MV Matthew, and has received confirmation from them that it is receiving attention,' a statement said. 'Revenue hopes to have these matters finalised shortly. Revenue is required to ensure that all regulations and legal obligations are fully complied with throughout the disposal and removal process.' 'Far too long' Berthing the ship, which includes costs for unberthing and moving the vessel when necessary, has cost €2,187,950. Maintenance of the ship — including fuel costs, waste removal, and repairs — has cost €3,784,050. Crewing has cost 3,762,054. More than €9,734,054 has been spent on the ship in total. These costs were paid by the Revenue Commissioners to maintain and manage the MV Matthew from September 2023 to the end of July 2025. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South Central Séamus McGrath said that the disposal of the MV Matthew is taking 'far too long'. 'The cost of keeping it on a weekly basis is extremely high,' he said. 'I doubt very much at this stage if the State will actually be any net better off as a result of the sale, given the amount of cost that was incurred in terms of the storage and maintenance of the ship.' The ship had been maintained to allow access for defence legal teams as it was at the centre of a major criminal trial. The Special Criminal Court authorised its release on December 2. It was only possible to dispose of the ship from that date. Mr McGrath said that it should have been ready for sale as soon as it was released by the courts. He said he has raised his concerns both with Revenue and with the Public Accounts Committee, and has requested further information on the sales process.

Sherry Fitzgerald in advanced talks to buy Knight Frank
A deal between the parties would create an Irish property behemoth, with industry sources saying that Sherry Fitzgerald is eager to expand its offering in the commercial sector. Knight Frank Ireland is one of the country's largest commercial real estate advisers, as well as having strong residential operations in the property market. A spokesman for Kelly's family office, Castlegate, which paid €50m for Sherry Fitzgerald in 2022, said the firm 'has considered several opportunities to further develop its Sherry Fitzgerald investment, both organically and through acquisition, and that process is ongoing.' Sources in the property sector say discussions between the parties have been ongoing for much of this year, but have recently progressed and are now at an 'advanced stage'. It is understood no deal has been signed or finally agreed as yet, however. In 2013, James Meagher, Declan O'Reilly and Adrian Trueick took over the Knight Frank brand in Ireland through their property advisory firm HT Meagher O'Reilly, after the global real estate agency's licence agreement with the Ganly Walters Partnership ended. The trio previously worked at DTZ Sherry FitzGerald, but left the company in 2004 after a failed management buyout. Mr Kelly's acquisition of Shery Fitzgerald via Castlegate sent ripples through the Irish property sector, with founder and former 50pc shareholder Mark FitzGerald earning a major €25m payout from the deal. The transaction was the first acquisition by Castlegate after Roy Barrett, the former managing director of Goodbody Stockbrokers, was appointed to manage Mr Kelly's €500m fortune in 2021. He left Castlegate in 2024. Sherry Fitzgerald's most recent set of accounts showed the group swung back into profit in 2023, making €1.3m following a loss of €226,000 the previous year. Turnover in the year was €34.8m, down slightly from €35.3m in 2022. Mr Kelly made much of his fortune after he founded eShopWorld (ESW) in 2010. It works with retailers across the world, such as Nike and Calvin Klein, to help them localise their websites for about 200 markets. ESW was sold in 2021 in a deal that likely valued the business at about €1bn. The Irish firm was acquired by Asendia, a joint venture between units of France's La Poste and La Poste Suisse. Asendia had been a shareholder since 2013, and had raised its stake in the business to 50.1pc in 2017. Mr Kelly owned the bulk of the remainder of ESW, meaning he is likely to have reaped about €500m from the sale. The value of the deal has never been officially disclosed. ESW's technology also helps handle a range of services for clients, from dealing with taxes and tariffs, to delivery, returns, fraud protection and data security. Before ESW, Mr Kelly led TwoWay Vanguard, one of Ireland's biggest transportation groups. He founded that business with his brother in 1998 and sold it in 2006 to Dubai-based logistics firm Aramex.

Cork fashionista praises ‘elegant' Rose of Tralee contestant Nancy – ‘She is a wonderful ambassador'
Nancy and the other 31 hopefuls began their Rose tour on Sunday from the Knightsbrook Hotel in Co Meath, and the cohort will be welcomed to Tralee tomorrow. During the tour, Nancy has worn pieces from Newmarket-based fashion store, Linehan's. Owner of Linehan's Fashions, Philip Linehan, said Nancy is a 'wonderful ambassador' for Meelin and North Cork as a whole. 'It is an honour for Nancy to be representing this local area as the Cork Rose. 'In Meelin, when they say they are heading to town, it would be Newmarket that they are talking about, so that will tell you how close we are. 'Nancy is an elegant lady, I have to say, and she is a wonderful ambassador, for me and more importantly, Meelin as well,' he said. Nancy has worn some of Philip's pieces throughout her time as the Cork Rose, which have garnered high praise from fashion lovers. 'Nancy is the first Rose from this area in a very long time – I can't remember the last time. 'She likes to shop local and support local, and I remember Nancy modelling for us in the past. 'If we have any fashion shows in Meelin or Newmarket, whether it's charity or local events, Nancy would always model for us, no problem. 'Nancy would always be open to suggestions, and she carries the clothes so well. 'I gave her a dress for the Charleville Agricultural Show and people were admiring it,' he said. Philip wished Nancy the 'very best of luck' in Tralee.
