Tsunami warning lifted after 7.1 earthquake rocks Tonga
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned of potential hazardous waves, but the threat was later lifted, allowing people to return home.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake's depth at 18 miles (29 kilometres).
Its epicentre was approximately 62 miles (100 kilometres) northeast of Tonga's main island, Tongatapu.
A second, 6.1 magnitude tremor followed in the same area hours later.
Tonga Broadcasting Commission's live stream captured the sound of tsunami sirens urging residents to move inland after the initial 1am quake.
Footage showed people in the capital, Nuku'alofa, evacuating to higher ground before officials declared the all-clear.
The country's disaster management office also cancelled its tsunami warning.
There were no initial reports of casualties, TBC said, and Tongans posting on social media reported being able to place calls with most of the inhabited island chains that make up the country.
It was too soon to know the extent of any damage, which would be assessed in daylight, the broadcaster added, but none was immediately reported.
Tongan taekwondo athlete Pita Taufatofua posted to Facebook that items fell from shelves and tables and pictures fell from the walls during the shaking.
'Was hard to stand up,' he wrote. 'Never felt an earthquake go for that long.'
Tonga is a country in Polynesia made up of 171 islands with a population of just over 100,000 people, most of whom live on the main island of Tongatapu.
It is 1,100 miles (1,800 km) north-east of New Zealand and situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic region of earthquakes and volcanoes.
The low-lying island nation was devastated by a tsunami in 2022 that was prompted by a volcanic eruption. Three people were killed.

Adelaide sink Firebirds, title defence back on track
The Adelaide Thunderbirds' bid for a Super Netball title three-peat is back on track, moving into the top four with a gritty 65-58 victory over the Queensland Firebirds. The two-time reigning champions were made to sweat at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday night, the result not sealed until the final two minutes. Star defender Latanya Wilson was the standout for the Thunderbirds with 10 deflections and nine gains, while fellow Jamaican Romelda Aiken-George nailed 50 goals at the other end to inflict Queensland's eighth successive defeat. "We weren't good last weekend (home loss to the bottom-placed Giants)," Wilson said. "I'm happy that my team went back to the drawing board. "I said to myself that my team needed (me) and if I can go out there and bring the fire, especially in that second quarter, our guys were going to fight." Wilson on fire 🔥Watch every game live on Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge. — Suncorp Super Netball (@SuperNetball) June 14, 2025 The Firebirds had threatened to pull away early with Tongan centre Hulita Veve bossing the midcourt and Abigail Latu-Meafou subbing in and duly sinking a pair of two-pointers. But thanks to the brilliance of Wilson, who amassed a whopping five gains for the term, Adelaide edged in front 17-15 at quarter-time. Thunderbirds captain Hanny Petty's sixth turnover then saw Queensland creep ahead 26-22 before Adelaide coach Tania Obst called a time-out, swung Georgie Horjus into goal attack, Tayla Williams to wing attack and demanded better energy and skills. During the huddle, Wilson was particularly vocal, pointedly telling her teammates "this is not good enough". Wilson led by example, continuing to rack up the deflections and intercepts as she spearheaded a 7-0 surge to give the T'birds back control. Outscored 12-10 in a scrappy second term, the Firebirds looked far more dangerous in the third. Macy Gardner, Mary Cholhok and Latu-Meafou combined well in attack as Queensland won the quarter 20-17 to slice the deficit to one goal. Veve's hot early start came crashing down with a swag of fourth-quarter cough-ups and the Firebirds looked like they were wilting, but Latu-Meafou's long-range brilliance - she finished with 6-of-7 super-shots - had the visitors back within a point. But just as a boilover was brewing, Queensland turnovers mounted again, allowing Adelaide to finish with a 6-0 spree.

Formula E packs 18 races into record 2025-26 calendar
Formula E has announced its biggest calendar yet as 18 rounds will make up the 2025-26 campaign with Brazil hosting the opener. The all-electric championship will visit Sao Paulo on 6 December with the season once again concluding at the ExCeL Arena in London on 15-16 August after a contract extension was agreed. Advertisement Formula E is still waiting on two 'TBC' rounds for next season's calendar though, which was approved by the FIA's World Motorsport Council in Macau on Tuesday. It comes after several racing calendars were revealed, including Formula 1's for 2026. After Sao Paulo, Formula E will return to Mexico City and the popular Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on 10 January, followed by Miami. The US race has a new home, dropping the Homestead Speedway after one event, and will now be held at the Miami International Autodrome for round three on 31 January - which is understood to be the start of a multi-year contract. Formula E is familiar with the circuit, hosting the Evo Sessions there earlier in 2025 – an influencer event aimed at raising awareness of the championship during an eight week break in the calendar. Jean-Eric Vergne, DS Penske Jean-Eric Vergne, DS Penske DPPI DPPI Advertisement The series' co-founder and chief championship officer Alberto Longo also hinted that Evo Sessions would return for the 2025-26 campaign, running parallel to the Miami race weekend. Formula E will also be back at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia for rounds four and five across 13 and 14 February. Jarama, Madrid, is a new addition to the calendar, having stepped in to host pre-season testing last year when devastating flooding hit the Valencia region of Spain. Drivers had positive feedback about the venue, which hosted F1 on nine occasions from the late '60s to early '80s. Madrid will kickstart the European leg of the calendar, with Jarama a single-header on 21 March and is followed by two double-headers in Berlin and Monaco. Advertisement The yet to be confirmed rounds follow, which are expected to be finalised at a forthcoming FIA World Motor Sport Council Meeting later this year. Race action Race action Andreas Beil Andreas Beil Jakarta in Indonesia, is notably absent and may fill one of the slots, with Sanya also being heavily speculated to make it two Chinese locations in a single season for Formula E – one of its key markets. Shanghai is back on 4-5 July, followed by Tokyo on 25-26 July, which is the latest slot it has had since debuting in 2024. The Japanese event has been hugely successful, especially with the dominance shown by Nissan and Oliver Rowland this season, with there being talks it could become a night race in due course. Advertisement Finally, London concludes the racing season with a double-header across 15-16 August around the unique half-indoor and half-outdoor ExCeL circuit. However, with Gen4 on the horizon for the 2026-27 season, this could be the last time the championship races at the temporary track as car speeds and power continues to increase.
