USA end losing streak with crushing of hapless Trinidad

Diego Luna #10 and Malik Tillman #17 were influential in the USA's 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday. (JED JACOBSOHN) The United States ended their four-match losing run with a resounding 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in their opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday in San Jose. Mauricio Pochettino and his team, which is missing several Europe-based regulars, had faced plenty of criticism after recent friendly defeats to Turkey and Switzerland. Advertisement In desperate need of a change in mood around the team, a year out from the World Cup they will co-host with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino fielded an attacking line-up. Against a Trinidad team, coached by former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, it proved to be just the kind of stress-free comfortable win that the Argentine coach was seeking. The USA were on top from the outset with two early chances for striker Patrick Agyemang and it was the striker who helped create the 16th-minute opener. Agyemang won the ball off Trinidad defender Alvin Jones, found Jack McGlynn on the right who kept his cool and clipped the ball to the back post where Malik Tillman collected and then slotted home. Advertisement It was a tough day for Jones, who then gifted the USA their second goal with a back-pass that went straight to winger Diego Luna who broke away and then unselfishly squared to Tillman for the PSV Eindhoven midfielder's second. Trinidad were showing why they have fallen down the FIFA rankings, slipping to 100th and fourth in the Caribbean, below Curacao, lacking any kind of solidity. The lively Luna created the third, a minute before the break, when he cut in from the left and his low shot deflected off Agyemang and beat the helpless Marin Phillip. It was easy going for Pochettino's side in the second half with Trinidad managing to threaten once when Tyrese Spicer put a low ball across the face of the goal but the sliding Dante Sealy was unable to connect. Advertisement With the game fizzling out, Pochettino made a triple substitution and that added some late urgency to his side's attack. Sub Brenden Aaronson cut in from left and squeezed a low shot past Phillip's near post and then another man off the bench, Haji Wright completed the convincing victory when he broke down the left and drifted inside before placing the ball in the far corner. The USA, looking for an eighth Gold Cup title, face Saudi Arabia and Haiti in their remaining two games in Group D. sev/rcw

Liverpool could offer Darwin Nunez in GENIUS swap deal for ideal striker

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez looks set to leave the club this summer. Although the Uruguay international is reported to have turned down the chance to join Al-Hilal, it is still expected that the 25-year-old departs. Nunez has been with Liverpool since 2022 - having joined from Benfica for a record fee that could reach £85m overall. But things haven't worked out for the No9 - although he can leave the club this summer as a Premier League champion. Furthermore, he only scored FIVE top-flight goals last season - ending the campaign behind Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota in the Anfield striking pecking order. Since turning down Saudi Arabia, it's become apparent that Darwin's priority is to REMAIN in Europe and there is no shortage of suitors for his signature. In Italy, AC Milan and Napoli are thought to be keen. And in LaLiga - Atletico Madrid are suddenly back on the menu. That's according to a new report in Fichajes, which claims Diego Simeone sees Nunez as the ideal candidate to improve his strikeline. Liverpool love Julian Alvarez Although Antoine Griezmann has been secured to a contract until 2027, there is uncertainty around Atleti's other forwards. They are still in the hunt for Viktor Gyokeres and their striker ambitions could have an impact on Alexander Sorloth as well as Julian Alvarez. Advertisement The Argentine World Cup winner has been reported to be a little underwhelmed by life at Atletico since swapping Manchester City for the Spanish capital last summer. Although he scored 29 goals in a memorable campaign, Atletico faded badly in LaLiga - leading the 25-year-old to put his own club future in doubt. © IMAGO Swap Nunez for Alvarez? Liverpool retain a long-term interest in Alvarez and could well have signed him from City had Pep Guardiola's side not insisted on adding Diaz to the deal. But with Darwin of interest to Atletico - and Liverpool club bosses liking Alvarez - there is an opportunity for Richard Hughes to conduct a stunning swap deal. Advertisement Alvarez is probably worth more than Darwin in the transfer window - given his contract extends to 2030 and his impressive goalscoring record. But if the Reds can add a transfer fee to the mix in a part-exchange, then perhaps Atletico could be convinced to do a deal. The former River Plate star was acquired for an initial fee of €75m last year. Liverpool value Nunez at around €75m too.

£200k-a-week contract offer will seal SENSATIONAL striker deal

Liverpool have got plans to move on from Darwin Nunez this summer. The Uruguayan striker only managed five Premier League goals during their title-winning campaign and has largely fallen out of favour with head coach Arne Slot. Speculation has been rife over the last few weeks that the 25-year-old will be sold - as long as Richard Hughes' demands are met. It appears £70m will do the trick for potential suitors although Nunez is being selective about his next destination. It could be AC Milan or Napoli in Italy - and Atletico Madrid have also been reported as suitors. And if Darwin leaves, it would leave a gap up top for a new forward. Top of the list is reportedly Victor Osimhen. Transfer talk has increased in recent weeks over the Nigerian - who is coming off a sensational season in the Turkish Super Lig with Galatasaray. Liverpool like Victor Osimhen The 26-year-old scored 37 times in 41 games overall for Cimbom - helping fire them to the league and Turkish Cup double. Napoli still own Osimhen's playing rights - with the player having spent the season on loan in Turkey. Advertisement He is only under contract until 2026 - meaning Osimhen is available for a fraction of his true transfer value this summer. That sum is reported to be €75m - not a million miles off what the Reds are seeking for Nunez. But the sticking point has always been Osimhen's salary. Indeed it's been previously reported that the Super Eagles sensation was seeking £400k per week from his next club. However, there appears to be a thaw in that stance as Osimhen makes sacrifices to land a Premier League move. © IMAGO Osimhen salary demands SLASHED In an item discussing Manchester United's interest in the former Lille frontman, Foot Mercato claims that Osimhen's salary requests now stand at €12m per year. Advertisement 'Talks have resumed very recently under the conditions discussed a few weeks ago, namely a salary of €12 million for the player and compensation of €75 million including bonuses for Napoli, the club that owns the player,' writes Sebastien Denis. That equates to around £200k per week - HALF of what was previously out there. So if Liverpool can conduct an outbound deal for Nunez - who earns around £140k per week - it means a deal for Osimhen won't break the bank. Indeed there is a tantalising prospect that Hughes could SWAP Osimhen for Nunez in a sensational deal with Napoli. Nonetheless this latest update suggests that Osimhen is no longer out of reach due to his pay packet.
