Royal Navy seizes $40m worth of drugs in Arabian Sea bust
It came after the HMS Lancaster pursued a drug-trafficking boat for more than a day when British drones launched from the warship spotted illegal activity.
The ship's crew deployed a Wildcat helicopter to carry out the interception, which saw a boarding team from 42 Commando seize 80 packages of drugs.

A Royal Navy spokesman said the packages contained 1,000 kg of heroin, 660 kg of hashish and 6 kg of amphetamine.
'It's the second bust in three months for the British warship, which is based in Bahrain and is attached to a New Zealand-led international task force spread across the Indian Ocean hunting down illegal activity,' he added.
'And it's the second time the Royal Navy's new Peregrine drones — mini-helicopters that conduct reconnaissance sorties for hours on end and feed live information back to Lancaster's operations room — have played a vital part in the success.'
In March, the Royal Navy used its Peregrine drones for the first time in a drugs bust, tracking smugglers in the Indian Ocean. More than 3 tonnes of heroin, hashish and amphetamine were seized.
Luke Pollard, the UK's armed forces minister, said: 'I congratulate the crew of HMS Lancaster on this significant seizure, which is keeping dangerous and illegal drugs off our streets.
'This operation highlights the unique role our Royal Navy contributes, working to disrupt criminal operations around the world, keeping us secure at home and strong abroad.'

Pakistan condemns recent Red Sea attacks, calls for protection of navigation routes
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed this week condemned the recent attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, calling for the protection of navigation routes and greater maritime cooperation worldwide. Ahmed was speaking at the UN Security Council open debate on 'Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation, and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges' on Monday. During the meeting, the Red Sea attacks from last month came under discussion. Washington accused Iran of fueling maritime insecurity in the Red Sea by supplying weapons and other materials to the Houthis. Washington's acting ambassador, Dorothy Shea, condemned the Houthis for the recent attacks in the Red Sea that resulted in the sinking of two commercial ships, the deaths of crew members and the taking of hostages. According to international news agency Reuters, Houthis have targeted more than 100 merchant ships traveling through the Red Sea since November 2023, sinking four vessels, seizing another and killing at least eight sailors. 'Attacks on commercial shipping undermine maritime security and global trade,' Ahmed said at the debate. 'We condemn such acts, including the recent Red Sea incidents, and support the Secretary-General's call for restraint, and protection of navigation routes.' The Pakistani envoy said, without naming any countries, that attempts to dominate maritime spaces or marginalize coastal states must be rejected, labeling them as 'counterproductive.' He said oceans must remain zones of peace, prosperity, and inclusive development. Ahmed said Pakistan regards the Arabian Sea as its 'fifth neighbor'— a cornerstone of the country's economic ambition and strategic horizon. 'Positioned at the junction of vital sea lanes, Pakistan is uniquely placed to serve as a premier trans-shipment hub and the primary gateway linking the landlocked heart of Central Asia with the global trading system,' he added. The Pakistani envoy pointed out that Islamabad remains a longstanding, active contributor to international maritime security. He said the country's navy participates in the Combined Maritime Forces Task Forces 150 and 151, and conducts regular Regional Maritime Security Patrols to ensure safe and secure seas. Ahmed said Pakistan also takes pride in regularly hosting the multinational Exercise AMAN in Karachi, which is one of the largest naval gatherings in the region. 'The 9th edition of AMAN held in February this year, brought together over 60 navies from across the world in a demonstration of unity and shared commitment to cooperative security at sea,' he said. Ahmed said emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, satellite monitoring and analytics are transforming maritime security but are also posing certain cyber weaponization and inequality risks. He stressed the need to develop these technologies responsibly, with equitable access and safeguards. 'Pakistan stands ready to work with all countries to safeguard the maritime domain, uphold international law, and ensure our oceans remain open, peaceful, and shared for the benefit of all humankind,' Ahmed concluded.

Saudi authorities thwart massive Captagon smuggling attempt at Al-Haditha
RIYADH: The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority at Al-Haditha border crossing successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 406,395 amphetamine pills, under the brand name Captagon, concealed in a livestock shipment. In an official statement posted on X on Friday ZATCA explained: 'Upon customs procedures and inspection using security techniques and live equipment, the pills were found hidden inside the sheep's fur.' After the seizure, coordination was made with the General Directorate of Narcotics Control to ensure the arrest of the intended recipients of the contraband in the Kingdom who were subsequently apprehended, added the authority. ZATCA affirmed its commitment to tightening customs control over the Kingdom's imports and exports and to confronting smuggling attempts. This is in line with the most prominent pillars of its strategy, which is to enhance the security and protection of society by limiting attempts to smuggle such pests and other prohibited items. The authority called on citizens and residents to contribute to combating smuggling and protect society and the national economy by contacting it on the dedicated security reporting number (1910), via email ([email protected]), or by calling the international number (009661910). Through these channels, the authority receives information related to smuggling crimes and violations of the provisions of the Unified Customs Law with complete confidentiality, and a financial reward is granted to those providing the tip-off if the information provided is accurate. Meanwhile the Border Guard land patrols in the Ad-Daer sector in Jazan region also thwarted the smuggling of 100,800 Captagon pills. The seized contraband handed over to the relevant authorities. Security authorities urged people to provide information they may have about smuggling by calling (911) in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, (999) and (994) in the rest of the Kingdom, or by calling the General Directorate of Narcotics Control's reporting number (995), or by email ([email protected]). All reports will be handled with complete confidentiality.
