'One of the biggest games of the past decade'

BBC News29-04-2025

There are "definitely dents and chinks" in the armour of Paris St-Germain that Arsenal can exploit, says Gunners fan Rakeem Noble.Arsenal host PSG on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final hoping to take a positive result back to Emirates stadium next Wednesday.Having comprehensively beaten defending champions Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-final, there is more confidence among fans than there may have been before that result.Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Noble said: "It's a big game, big occasion, probably one of the biggest games of the past decade or so at the Emirates. There is no reason to be negative about this one."Last time, before the Real Madrid game, it was a bit shaky. Nobody was sure how it was going to go as the season wasn't looking great, but I feel like we have new life and new breath after that 5-1 aggregate win. We go to PSG now much more confident than last time."PSG have been a solid team throughout the year. They have won the French league, but then tell me a year that PSG haven't won the French League. At Champions League level, yes they beat Aston Villa first time around comfortably, but second time around I think they got the run around by Aston Villa."There is definitely dents and chinks in their armour that can be exploited. Looking at how Arsenal dealt with Madrid over the two legs - a comprehensive beating with 3-0 and 2-1 - if Arsenal go in with that kind of strength then I definitely believe they can get the job done."If you beat Real Madrid in the earlier stages then it gives you confidence you can go and beat anyone else."

Man Utd's three back-up transfer options as Viktor Gyokeres snubs Ruben Amorim

Manchester United were hoping to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but Mirror Football understands that the 27-year-old has rejected a move to Old Trafford and would prefer to join Arsenal instead. The striker wants to join a club that will be playing Champions League football next season and United failed to qualify for the tournament after finishing 15th in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The news comes as a major blow for United, with manager Ruben Amorim keen on a reunion with Gyokeres, and the club are now turning their attention to alternative options. The Red Devils are in need of a prolific striker, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee disappointing last season. The pair managed just 17 goals between them in a combined 105 appearances across all competitions and Amorim is desperate to bring in an upgrade. United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, but he is expected to play in a slightly deeper role. With all that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at three potential alternatives to Gyokeres... Hugo Ekitike Hugo Ekitike has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive campaign where he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games for Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Sky Germany, United have opened talks with Frankfurt over a deal and the Bundesliga side are demanding a fee of around £85million. However, the report adds that both Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Ekitike. Victor Osimhen Victor Osimhen is expected to leave Napoli this summer after spending last season on loan at Galatasaray, netting 37 goals in 41 appearances. The Sun are reporting that he has emerged as a 'genuine back-up plan' for United after they missed out on Gyokeres, with Osimhen recently rejecting a hugely lucrative offer from Al-Hilal as he wants to remain in Europe. Jean-Philippe Mateta Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford after scoring 17 goals last season and helping his side lift the FA Cup. Mateta would be a more affordable signing given his contract is due to expire in 2027 and French outlet L'Equipe have previously reported that United have 'already positioned themselves' to make a move for the 27-year-old. However, Palace are hoping to convince Mateta to sign a new deal. Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Mehdi Taremi to miss Club World Cup after Israeli strikes close Iran's airports

The Inter forward Mehdi Taremi will not be able to join his teammates at the Club World Cup in the United States as he is stuck in Tehran because of the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Flights from all Iranian airports have been grounded after an exchange of military strikes between Iran and Israel over the past two days. That meant the Iran international was unable to take his scheduled flight on Saturday to join his teammates in Los Angeles. Taremi will miss Inter's opening match against Monterrey on Wednesday and Italian media said the 32-year-old will not feature in the other matches regardless of whether Iranian airspace reopens. Taremi joined Inter from Porto last year. He made seven starts in Serie A this past season and came off the bench 19 times, scoring once for the runners-up. He made 12 appearances in their Champions League run, but was an unused substitute in the 5-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Man Utd set sights on Liverpool target after Viktor Gyokeres says no to move

Manchester United are the latest Premier League club to be linked with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike after learning that Viktor Gyokeres will not move to Old Trafford this summer Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has set his sights on joining Arsenal after telling Manchester United that he won't be moving to Old Trafford. The Swedish striker feels he needs to join a club that will be playing in the Champions League next season and wants to challenge for the Premier League title. Sources at United have refused to comment on reports from Portugal that the 27-year-old has told the club that he has no interest in linking up again with his former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim in Manchester. ‌ But it is understood that the Reds have already started looking at alternative targets - and that they are ready to ramp up their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. ‌ Ekitike, 22, the France Under-21 international has also been attracting the attention of Liverpool after scoring 22 goals for the German club last season. But Frankfurt's £80million valuation of the former Paris St Germain forward will have to be lowered significantly before United table a bid. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has made it his mission to add more goals to Mikel Arteta 's squad next season. The Gunners have drawn up a shortlist that also includes RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Atletico Madrid's former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez. Berta met with Sporting director of football Bernardo Palmeiro in Menorca last week to discuss Gyokeres. The former Coventry striker has scored an impressive 97 goals in 102 games in Portugal. And with Bayern Munich now registering an interest in Slovakian International Sesko and Argentine World Cup winner Alvarez settled in Spain, it appears that Gyokeres ticks a lot of boxes. One major issue is that the player's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, has become embroiled in an ugly war of words with Sporting president Frederico Varandas. ‌ Cetinkaya insists he has a written guarantee from the Sporting chief promising to do a deal with any club offering £59million. Varandas has countered by claiming that while he did make a verbal agreement to sell Gyokeres for less than the £84.7million get-out clause stipulated in his contract he is yet to set a valuation. Now Varandas is threatening to impose the full terms of the buy-out after being angered further by a threat that Gyokeres could go on strike to force through a sale. ‌ The row is further complicated by Cetinkaya's revelation that Sporting will have to pay him almost £6million if they reject an official bid of £51million up front and £8million in add-ons. But according to sources close to Sporting, they have told coach Rui Borges to prepare for the next season without his top goalscorer and have started the process of recruiting a replacement. There has also been confirmation from Portugal that Coventry will get a 10 percent cut of any fee that Sporting generate from selling Gyokeres. The Sky Blues had originally negotiated a 15 percent concession as part of the deal that took the Swede to Lisbon for £20million two seasons ago. But they accepted a payment of £843,500 last year to reduce their entitlement. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
