Putin appears ready to test new missile as he prepares for Trump talks, researchers say

Russia appears to be preparing to test its new nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered cruise missile, according to two US researchers and a Western security source, even as Russian President Vladimir Putin readies for talks on Ukraine with US President Donald Trump on Friday.
Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and Decker Eveleth of the CNA research and analysis organisation, based in Virginia, reached their assessments separately by studying imagery taken in recent weeks until Tuesday by Planet Labs, a commercial satellite firm.
They agreed the photos showed extensive activity at the Pankovo test site on the Barents Sea archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, including increases in personnel and equipment and ships and aircraft associated with earlier tests of the 9M730 Burevestnik (Storm Petrel).
'We can see all of the activity at the test site, which is both huge amounts of supplies coming in to support operations and movement at the place where they actually launch the missile,' Lewis said.
A Western security source, who asked not to be further identified, confirmed that Russia is preparing a Burevestnik test. Lewis said a test could occur this week, raising the possibility it could overshadow the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.
Asked for comment, the White House did not address the possibility of a Burevestnik test. The Pentagon, the CIA, and Russia's defence ministry declined to comment.

UK PM hosts Zelensky on eve of US-Russia summit

UK PM hosts Zelensky on eve of US-Russia summit Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, right, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer depart 10 Downing Street, in London. Photo: Reuters Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London in a show of support on the eve of a key US-Russia summit from which Kyiv and its European allies have been excluded. Starmer greeted the Ukrainian leader with a warm hug and handshake on the steps of his Downing Street residence, only hours after Zelensky took part in a virtual call with US President Donald Trump. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on Friday at an air base in Alaska. A stepped-up Russian offensive, and the fact Zelensky has not been invited to the Anchorage meeting, have heightened fears that Trump and Putin could strike a deal that forces painful concessions on Ukraine. But Starmer said on Wednesday there was now a "viable" chance for a ceasefire in Ukraine after more than three years of fighting. (AFP)

Pakistan's new rocket force aims to match India's missile capabilities

Pakistan will create a new force in the military to supervise missile combat capabilities in a conventional conflict, apparently a move to match the neighbouring arch-rival India. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the creation of the Army Rocket Force late on Wednesday at a ceremony held in Islamabad to commemorate the worst conflict in decades with India in May. The ceremony was held a day ahead of Pakistan's 78th Independence Day. 'It will be equipped with modern technology,' Sharif said in a statement from his office, adding that the force will prove to be a milestone in strengthening the combat capability of Pakistan's army. He did not give any further details. A senior security official, however, said that the force will have its own command in the military, which will be dedicated to the handling and deployment of missiles in the event of a conventional war.

As Trump prepares to meet Putin, peace prospects in Ukraine war seem slim, analysts say

The stage is set for what could mark a turning point – or yet another false dawn – in efforts to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic efforts to resolve the grinding Ukraine conflict, now in its fourth year, US President Donald Trump is hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin for face-to-face talks in Alaska on Friday. Security will be extraordinarily tight: airspace over the port city will be closed on Friday and Saturday and the US Secret Service will work closely with Russia's Federal Protective Service to ensure the leaders' safety. Indeed, the meeting's exact venue has not been officially disclosed, though The New York Times and local media reported that it would be held at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a combined US Air Force and Army base in Anchorage on Friday. While observers worldwide fixate on how the summit might shape the war in Ukraine – and possibly scramble the geopolitical landscape – the White House has worked to temper expectations. On Tuesday, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, acknowledged that with 'only one party' present, a deal was not possible. Despite strong objections from Kyiv and Brussels, neither Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky nor any EU official will take part in the talks. The White House said that Zelensky was not included because the invitation to meet came directly from Putin.
