Working for a magazine, I'm lucky that I get to try a whole range of make-up products, from new launches to cult classics.
It means I've developed strong opinions about what's really worth having; I've got an entire drawer stocked with make-up products at home, but only a small selection makes it into the make-up bag that I throw in my handbag every day.
Ahead, I've emptied out said make-up kit (it's the Space NK Medium Travel Bag, FYI) to pick out the absolute essentials I'd have to repurchase if, God forbid, I'd ever lose it…
Kulfi Badi Lash Mascara
This black mascara from Kulfi Beauty is the newest addition to my everyday make-up routine. The tubing formula is water-, smudge- and sweat-proof, while the brush separates and lifts each lash. Plus, it's easy to remove with warm water and a (reusable) cotton pad.
£26 Shop
L'Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Panorama Mascara (Brown)
I know what you're thinking: why do you need two mascaras? Well, this one is brown. And it's by far my favourite drugstore mascara. It has a clever multi-level bristle brush that allows you to separate and coat every lash from root to tip and delivers a lengthening effect.
£12.99 Shop
Nyx Control Freak Eyebrow Gel
There's no need to spend ridiculous money on a clear brow gel. This one from Nyx does the job perfectly; it's non-sticky, keeps my brows in place all day and doesn't flake.
£7.99 Shop
Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer (Vanilla)
I've repurchased more tubes of this product than I can remember because I just haven't found a concealer that offers the same full coverage (one dot and the spot is gone) and staying power (it really lasts all day).
£28 Shop
Merit Beauty Bronze Balm (Clay)
This bronzing stick from Merit is one of the easiest bronzers I've ever used. It has a sheer, buildable cream formula that's impossible to mess up; just swipe it across your cheekbones, jawline and forehead and blend.
£26 Shop
Summer Fridays Blush Butter Balm (Soft Strawberry)
I don't like to pick favourites when it comes to blusher, but this new creamy, balm-like blush from Summer Fridays in the shade Soft Strawberry might just be my favourite one yet. It's very pigmented but blendable, melts into the skin and gives it a glowy, natural-looking flush.
£27 Shop
Giorgio Armani Eye Tint Liquid Eyeshadow (67 Sparkle)
Definitely a splurge, but this sparkly eye tint from Giorgio Armani is the only eyeshadow I wear. It's super easy to apply – just swipe its applicator across your eyelid, once or twice; it doesn't need blending – and doesn't smudge.
£32 Shop
Sephora Collection Waterproof 12h Retractable Eyeliner Pencil (Matte Brown)
I can't vouch for its staying power on the eyelid, but this matte brown retractable pencil from Sephora is my go-to for tightlining (i.e. applying eyeliner to the inside of my upper lash line to make my lashes appear fuller).
£12.99 Shop
Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment (Crème Brûlée)
I've tried countless tinted lip balms but I always go back to this one from Ole Henriksen. It's super hydrating, glossy and the Crème Brûlèe shade gives my lips that perfect wash of colour.
£17 Shop
IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Brush
I actually wouldn't have to repurchase this dual-ended brush if I'd lost my make-up bag because I have a spare one at home; that's how much I love it. I use the smaller, denser end to blend in my concealer, and the large, fluffy end to blend in my bronzer and blush.
£39 Shop
Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray
I always keep a travel size of my favourite hairspray in my make-up bag. It's lightweight yet manages to tame my flyaways, smells really good and leaves a pretty shine. I spray it onto a brush and comb it through my hair.
£12.50 Shop

Match of the Day ready to return for new season but Premier League fans can catch highlights on BBC much earlier

BBC viewers will be able to watch Premier League highlights this season more than two hours before Match of the Day. The iconic Beeb highlights programme is set to return to screens this Saturday. Mark Chapman will host the first show of the post-Gary Lineker era. In addition to Lineker's departure following 26 years in the hotseat, the BBC will be making other changes to its Premier League output. Match of the Day will continue to provide fans with all the match action plus high-profile punditry. But fans will be able to watch just the highlights on BBC iPlayer from 8pm. Despite all the goals and major incidents being available earlier, Beeb chiefs believe that MOTD will still be able to pull in a major viewership. A BBC press release confirmed: "Published live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, match highlights from every fixture will drop at 8pm, putting all the biggest moments at fans' fingertips ahead of the expert analysis and in-depth discussion on the main show. "It's a game-changing way to stay connected and fully immersed in the action." Chapman, 51, is set to be the first of Match of the Day's new three rotating presenters to sit in the hotseat. The experienced broadcaster will rotate with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan throughout the season. Cates, 49, is set to continue her prominent role with Sky Sports alongside her new MOTD duties. Gary Lineker sensationally quits BBC and will not front its 2026 World Cup coverage after anti-Semitism row Per the Telegraph, Match of the Day has managed to pull in a 3.5 million average audience over recent seasons. That is despite plenty of live TV games, streaming and goals being available on social media. Despite Lineker's exit, his right-hand men Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will continue as pundit regulars on Match of the Day. While, as SunSport revealed last month, Wayne Rooney will join the team on a regular basis. 2

The ‘funniest' one-liner from Edinburgh Fringe

A comedian has said his father was blissfully unaware of a one-liner at his expense that has now been crowned the funniest of the Edinburgh Fringe. Andy Gleeks, from Antrim, Northern Ireland, has won the (some guy called) Dave Joke of the Fringe 2025, for which 10 were shortlisted. He won with the joke: 'I had to visit the trauma unit last weekend. He prefers the term dad.' The comedian, who takes home the title, a trophy and a £250 cash prize, said: 'The first thing I've had to do today is message my father to tell him about the joke I wrote about him. 'He never knew I wrote it and was telling it to thousands of strangers up and down the country.' The competition invited comedians performing at the Fringe to submit their best jokes. A longlist was then selected by a panel of comics including Gary Delaney, of Mock the Week fame, and former winners Mark Simmons and Darren Walsh. The shortlist was then taken to Edinburgh's Cowgate, where Will Mars, the competition's founder, wandered the streets looking for 'some guy called Dave' and found Fringe-goer Dave Humphrys. Mr Humphrys judged the shortlist with his family over a pre-show drink and said of his choice: 'I absolutely love dad jokes, puns, and one-liners and this list has really given us a good giggle.' The (some guy called) Dave competition was relaunched this year by Mr Mars after UKTV's Dave announced they would put their long-running Joke of the Fringe competition on hold this year. Mr Mars had previously run the alternative competition in 2021, during the partial post-pandemic Fringe, when UKTV also pulled out. He said: 'I had to bring the (some guy called) Dave competition back. It's important to comedians, it gives their work a little more recognition and placing on the list gives performers a lift just when they need it, when the fringe starts to get tiring and tough. 'It's little lifts like these that help us all get through the fringe experience and I wanted to help continue lifting those comics up when they need it most. It's also a great chance to get some more jokes to tell you pals in the pub or at work.' The last winner of the (some guy called) Dave competition in 2021 was Masai Graham with the joke: 'I thought the word 'Caesarean' began with the letter 'S' but when I looked in the dictionary, it was in the 'C' section.' Gleeks has been performing his show Fragments daily at 12.30pm in the Boston Bar.

Survive hot days with mum's ‘best sun cream hack EVER' that promises no tears thanks to an unexpected kitchen essential

A SAVVY mum has shared a 'genius' trick to guarantee there are no tears when applying sun cream. Not only does it make the process much more fun for youngsters, but if your little one hates having sun cream applied, then you'll need to check this out. 2 2 With this simple tip, which has been hailed the 'best sun cream hack ever,' you'll need an unexpected kitchen essential. Posting on social media, Gemma McCartan, a mum-of-two and full-time content creator from the UK, gave her followers a close-up look at her trick, which involves using spoons when applying spray sun cream. Alongside her short video, the influencer beamed: 'The best sun cream hack for kids EVER.' She then said: 'To the mum who posted this, I love you.' Instead of wrestling her son Max to close his eyes so she could apply the spray sun cream to his face, the youngster instead put two spoons over his eyes. Gemma was then able to spray his face with sun cream, without it getting in his eyes and causing any tears. Moments after, the woman's daughter then did the same, yet again ensuring a seamless application with no irritation of the eyes, whilst at the same time, making the often agonising process much more exciting. Thrilled with her hack, Gemma later wrote: 'It's been a game changer.' Clearly beaming with the simple trick, the mother added: 'It's made my day, I had the kids crying on holiday until we found this hack.' Gemma's TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @ gemmamccartan, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 200,800 views. Kelsey Parker mum-shamed for admitting she doesn't put suncream on her kids Not only this, but it's also amassed 2,074 likes and 138 comments. Parents were impressed with the 'genius' trick and many thought it was a 'great' idea. One person said: 'What a brilliant idea.' Another added: 'That is genius.' Whilst a third commented: 'Not only practical, it gives the kids a feeling of control over what's about to happen, so they are more willing to cooperate. Great idea.' Meanwhile, someone else gushed: 'Best idea ever for sun cream.' The importance of sun cream in your skincare routine Dermatologist and skincare enthusiast Andrea Suarez - known as Dr Dray - revealed why you should wear suncream. The one thing you can do that will make the biggest difference - and this matters for all ages - is protecting your skin from the sun, Andrea stressed. "The vast majority of external aging is due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation," she continued, not because you're "not using some jazzy serum or layering 90 different things on your face everyday". "If you're not doing in your 20s, get on that now." But she said the use of sun cream alone doesn't go far enough. Andrea urged that you also wear sun-protective clothing like broad-brimmed hats and long sleeves, on top of not staying out too long in the sun. Doing this over your lifetime - and all year, not just during the summer or on sunny days - "will reduce the visible signs of photoageing", Andrea said. Those are wrinkles, muddled pigmentation and sagging skin. However, at the same time, one user wrote: 'Should have cream on eyelids too as they can burn, I know it stings if it gets in eyes but it's such a sensitive area so best to have full coverage.' To this, Gemma wrote back and explained: 'Yes but my son has allergies so this is amazing.' Not only this, but another person asked: 'Won't they get a burnt line where the handles are?' In response, Gemma confirmed that instead of spraying the sun cream on her youngster's eyelids, after the fun part, she then uses her finger for a more controlled application, as she acknowledged: "I use my finger to do the sides and lids.'
