Yahoo6 days ago
An Alabama preacher who police said left a 5-year-old unattended while he drank at a bar into the early morning hours is facing a criminal charge in connection to the weekend incident.
John Gibson was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police found the child inside Gibson's SUV, Dothan Police Department Lt. Scott Owens told USA TODAY on Wednesday, July 16.
According to Owens, the department's public information officer, Gibson left a 5-year-old family member in his SUV while he drank at a bar in the 2800 block of Ross Clark Circle in Dothan from Saturday, July 12, into the early morning hours of Sunday, July 13.
The city of Dothan is in Houston County in southeast Alabama near the Georgia and Florida state lines.

'He was pretty highly intoxicated'
A concerned patron alerted police that a child was in a vehicle unattended," Owens said. "When officers arrived, people directed them to a parking lot where they found the vehicle with the child inside unattended and ID'd Gibson as the owner of vehicle and the child's family member.
USA TODAY is not releasing how the child is related to Gibson to protect their identity.
It was not immediately known how long the child had been in the vehicle when the officer arrived on the scene, but police said the child was unharmed.
"He was pretty highly intoxicated," Owen said recalling when police first interacted with the suspect.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources, WTVY-TY, reported, "took the child into their care" until other family members arrived.

'It's just an overall unsafe issue'
At the time of the crime, temperatures were in the low 80s, according to weather forecasters.
"Regardless of the temperature, someone could have come and kidnapped the child or the child could have had a medical emergency," Owens said. "It's just an overall unsafe issue to leave a child in the car (alone).
Police confirmed Gibson was a pastor at First Baptist Church of Dothan at the time of his arrest.

In a statement released to the outlet, the church said it "parted ways with its associate pastor to families following his arrest."
'This incident occurred on the staff member's personal time and in no way involved any of the students or children who participate in our student ministry,' the church wrote in the statement.
USA TODAY has reached out to First Baptist Church of Dothan.
Pastor who drank in bar while child sat in SUV free on bond
Officers booked Gibson into the jail on July 13, Owens said.
As of July 16, he was free on $500 bond, according to Owen and information from Houston County Sheriff's Office jail records.
Owen could not immediately be reached for comment and it was not known whether he had obtained a defense attorney in the case.

1 Killed in Shooting at University of New Mexico Dorm Building, Suspect in Custody

Students were allowed to return to their dorms, but police remain at the scene A suspect is reportedly in custody after a shooting at the University of New Mexico left one person dead and another injured. On Friday, July 25, UNM informed students that the Albuquerque school was still part of 'an active crime scene on the central corridor of the central campus' following a shelter-in-place issued earlier in the day. 'Evacuation is not mandatory. Dorm students will be able to eat in La Posada and return to their dorm rooms. Please avoid the crime scene shown in the attached image and follow the directions of officers on scene,' the college said in a final emergency update shared to their website at 4:14 p.m. local time. U.S. Marshals in Los Lunas arrested the suspect that afternoon, KOB 4 reported. Neither the suspect nor the two victims were identified. The UNM Police Department responded to a report of gunshots at the Casas del Rio student housing complex that morning, according to the outlet. The shooting took place around 3:00 a.m. local time Friday morning, KRQE added, citing a Lobo Alert. However, students in the Gila building said they heard about 'four or five shots' just before midnight and sheltered in place, KOB 4 reported. The UNM Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. 'I just heard like three pops, three loud pops, and then, uh, we thought it was like gunshots or something, so then we checked out the window and then, like, we just seen like random people running around,' Jubilee Tasi, a freshman from Seattle told KRQE. 'We heard another popping, and then after that, we were just confused on what was going on, so we just called it a night, and then I went to sleep.' The student said they'd been watching a movie with friends at the time of the shooting, and also said they hadn't witnessed any other disturbances since moving in on June 13. 'What happened last night is just crazy, cause I mean, I'm still trying to get used to the environment over here, so for that to happen it's just kinda crazy,' Tasi said. President Garnett Stokes shared a message to the school's social media channels saying 'law enforcement confirmed that multiple shots were fired in the early morning in our Casas del Rio student housing.' 'The shooting resulted in the death of one individual and the injury of another, who is currently being cared for at a local hospital. The identities of both the deceased and the injured individual have not yet been released,' Stokes continued in the lengthy post, which was one of several updates. School officials urged students and staff to 'Continue to monitor your UNM email, text messages, and LoboGuardian for real-time updates.' Suspect vehicle in fatal Lincoln, Ont., hit-and-run found burning in Mississauga: police

The suspect vehicle in a fatal hit-and-run that killed an 82-year-old man in Lincoln, Ont., last week was found burning in Mississauga, police said Friday. Police are now searching for a 50-year-old man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder, police said. On July 17 around 9:45 a.m., Larry Pearce, 82, was struck by a man attempting to steal his vehicle and exit the parking lot of Charles Daly Park in the Town of Lincoln, just west of St. Catherines, Niagara Regional Police Service said in a release last week. Pearce had been driving out of the parking lot when he was stopped by the man, police said. The two had an interaction and Pearce got out of his vehicle, a grey Honda CRV, before the man jumped in and attempted to drive off, police said. Pearce tried to stop the man but he was struck by the vehicle and fell to the ground, police said. He was rushed to hospital where he later died. Niagara police later identified the suspect as a 50-year-old man of no fixed address. As recently as Tuesday, police said they believed the suspect was still operating the victim's vehicle after he was spotted with his dog, a pit bull-style breed with white fur and black and brown markings, in Mississauga. On Thursday, Peel Regional Police said in a release that officers discovered the victim's stolen vehicle on fire in the area of 1875 North Sheridan Way in Mississauga. Investigators determined the vehicle had been driven into the green space off Springbank Road at approximately 8:20 p.m. Thursday, before it was intentionally set on fire, police said. "A lone individual was seen walking away from the area shortly thereafter," Peel police said in the release. Police have not yet located the suspect. Police are appealing to people in the area of North Sheridan Way, Springbank Road, and Sevenoaks Drive in Mississauga, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious between 8:10 p.m. and 8:40 p.m. on July 24, to contact investigators. Anyone in the area who may have relevant surveillance or dashcam video is also asked to come forward. Investigators do not believe the suspect is still with his dog, police said. Earlier this week, Niagara police warned the public not to approach the suspect if they identify him, but to call 911.
