Local Residents Hold Suspect at Gunpoint Assisting Police in Chase
HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Two Houston County residents say they assisted police in a chase Sunday to Rickey Stokes News, multiple Houston County Sheriff's Deputies and Ashford Police officers responded to Oak Creek Lane off of Bluff Springs Road this afternoon after getting reports of multiple disorderly people, both male and female, show one or more suspects then allegedly fled on foot between a trailer park on Oak Creek Lane and the cemetery at Bluff springs witnesses and Houston County residents, Nick Francis and Kincaid Knight, tell WDHN they caught one of the suspects in the woods during the chase and held the man at gunpoint before police caught up to detain him. Francis claims the deputies thanked them for their assistance afterwards. Houston County deputies rescue dog left tied to stop sign
HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – Members of the Houston County Sheriff's Office have rescued a dog who was left tied up to a stop sign with no food or water in sight. Passenger ejected from vehicle during crash in Smith County Deputies received a call on Sunday reporting that a dog had been tied to a stop sign at County Road 2140 and FM 229. Once officials arrived on the scene, they discovered the dog tied to the stop sign wearing a harness with a ratchet strap running through the harness. Deputies took the dog, and he is currently being cared for at the sheriff's office. Officials stated they will contact the veterinarian's office in the morning to possibly identify the owner. Houston County teacher named runner-up for Georgia Teacher of the Year
Houston County teacher Jade Thomas has been named the runner-up for Georgia's Teacher of the Year award, the Georgia Department of Education announced Friday. Thomas, a social studies and English teacher at Lake Joy Elementary, is a former active-duty Marine who became the cofounder of the school's Military Kids Club. She has a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood and childhood education from Niagara University, a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction for elementary education from Liberty University, and a Specialist in Education with an endorsement in English as a second or other language from Mercer University. 'She prioritizes creating a classroom environment where students are welcomed, loved, and fully engaged in learning every day,' the Georgia Department of Education said in a news release. Thomas finished as the runner-up to Rachel Kinsaul, an agricultural science teacher at Morgan County High School. The winner and runner-up were announced Friday night by state school Superintendent Richard Woods at a banquet held at Lanier Islands to celebrate all Teachers of the Year across Georgia's school districts. Kinsaul aims to prepare her students to be productive community members, the Georgia Department of Education said. As an agricultural educator, she seeks to help her students find the best versions of themselves by becoming leaders through her agricultural education, the state department of education said. 'Rachel Kinsaul opens up possibilities for her students every day – in agriculture and beyond,' Woods said in a news release. 'She is a standout example of the hands-on learning opportunities that Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education opens up and the life-changing power of an excellent teacher in the classroom. I know she will be an incredible advocate for public education in the state of Georgia and will shine a light on the rich opportunities our K-12 schools provide.' Before being named a finalist and the runner-up for state Teacher of the Year, Thomas was featured in a Disney-produced documentary that aired Christmas morning on ABC and Disney+. She was honored for her dedication to education and support for military families — especially through the Military Kids Club she co-founded. Thomas received a surprise trip to Walt Disney World. Now that she's been named the runner-up for Teacher of the Year, she'll serve as an ex-officio member of the board of the Georgia Foundation for Public Education, which invests in schools and academics in the state. 2 women found dead in Houston County, suspect faces murder charges.
A man is facing two murder charges after Houston County officials found two women dead Sunday, according to the Houston County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office was called to conduct a death investigation just after 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Woodland Trail, according to the sheriff's office. 'When deputies arrived on scene, they located two deceased adult females and quickly determined that the cause of death for both females was homicide,' the sheriff's office said. The victims were identified as 29-year-old Re'Dashia Boston and 49-year-old Virginia Boston, the sheriff's office said. Investigators identified 29-year-old Cordele resident Rashad Williams as a person of interest, the sheriff's office said. Investigators from the Crisp County and Worth County sheriff's office joined the investigation in an effort to help find Williams. He was found in an abandoned farmhouse in Warwick, in Worth County, the Houston County Sheriff's Office said. He was detained at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The sheriff's office expects more charges to be filed, in addition to the two counts of murder that Williams currently faces.
