Family of police officer involved in chopper crash relieved he's on path to recovery
JOHOR BARU: The family of Supt Ahmad Bustamin Baharom, who was among five injured in a police helicopter crash at Sungai Pulai during a mock nuclear training exercise yesterday, is relieved that he is on track for recovery.
Following the accident on Thursday (July 10), his 82-year-old father, Baharum Mohammed, and mother, Che Ma Abu Bakar, 75, set off from their home in Alor Setar, Kedah at 10pm and arrived at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) around 8am to visit him.
"Before the exercise, he called me and said he was about to board the helicopter. Then we both prayed for his safety.
"Not long after, I was shocked to receive a call from the authorities that the helicopter my son was in had crashed into the water," said Baharum when met after visiting his son at the hospital on Friday (July 11).
He added that despite the chaos of the crash, his 46-year-old son managed to get out of the submerged helicopter before help arrived.
"The police informed us that my son was the first one to be rescued from the water. Some of the victims were unconscious during the incident.
"We are thankful that he remained conscious throughout and was able to speak to us when we visited," he said, adding that Supt Ahmad sustained injuries to his back, including fractured ribs and facial swelling.
Baharom, a retired school principal, said Supt Ahmad is his second out of five children, and he has four children of his own, aged nine to 16.
Earlier, Bukit Aman Air Operations Force Deputy Commander (Operations) Senior Asst Comm Ahmad Lokman Abdul Hadi visited the victims at around 10am, followed by Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan about an hour later.
On Thursday, the Eurocopter AS3555 Ecureuil crashed about 21m from the jetty while performing an exercise attended by personnel from Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Two senior police officers with the rank of Assistant Commissioner and Superintendent, along with three other personnel, were sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah shortly after the 10.25am incident.

MUAR: A female clerk lost more than RM277,580 of her savings after becoming a victim of an online job scam. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz reported that the 42-year-old victim was searching for a part-time job online when she clicked on a link and contacted an individual via WhatsApp. "The individual claimed to represent a company named 'HR Hotelrunner'. After the victim shared her personal details, she was added to a WhatsApp group called 'Bookassist Marketing Grp'," he explained in a statement on Sunday (Aug 3). He noted that the victim then communicated with another individual who instructed her to complete several hotel room booking tasks online, requiring her to make upfront payments with her own money. "The victim was promised commissions ranging from 10% to 35% for each task. Initially, she received a return on her first transaction in July, which encouraged her to continue with more tasks," he said. ACP Raiz added that the victim made 44 transactions in total to 13 different bank accounts, amounting to RM277,445. "All these payments were supposedly for completing the assigned tasks. The victim only realised she had been scammed when she was asked to make an additional payment to withdraw her promised returns. "She refused further payments and lodged a police report," he said, noting that the funds were from her personal savings. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of one to ten years, with whipping and a fine upon conviction. "I advise the public to be cautious of any online part-time job offers promising unrealistic returns. Always verify the authenticity of the company or individual before making any transactions. "Additionally, the public is advised to stay updated by following the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's official social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest scam tactics," he advised.

Man, 25, killed after motorcycle crashes into road divider on Johor expressway
JOHOR BARU: A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed after crashing into a road divider on an expressway here. Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident occurred at KM30.4 of the E22 Senai-Desaru Expressway at around 10am on Saturday (Aug 2). 'The male victim was travelling from the E22 Senai-Desaru Expressway heading towards Desaru. "He lost control of his motorcycle before hitting the road divider along the left side of the road," he said, adding that the victim died on the spot due to severe internal injuries. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. He reminded road users to remain patient and always adhere to traffic laws and regulations. Witnesses with information about the incident are also urged to contact the police at 07-3864222 to assist in investigation.

Two Bangladeshi cyclists killed, one hurt in hit-and-run incident in Johor
MUAR: Two Bangladeshi cyclists were killed while another was injured in a hit-and-run incident here. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said police received a report from the public about the incident, which occurred at around 8.45pm at Parit Salam, Parit Yusuf here on Friday (Aug 1). 'Preliminary investigations found that the three Bangladeshi men, all aged 21, were cycling against the traffic flow from Parit Yusuf towards Bukit Mor. 'They were hit by a vehicle, which could not be identified in terms of its make or registration number, that was heading from Parit Yusuf to Bukit Mor,' he said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 2). ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the impact of the crash caused all three victims to be thrown onto the left shoulder of the road. 'Two of the victims suffered head and internal injuries. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second died while receiving treatment at Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah's red zone. 'The third victim sustained fractures to his right wrist and shoulder and is currently being treated in the yellow zone of the same hospital,' he added. He said police are still working to identify and locate the driver of the vehicle involved.
