National Women's T20 to begin today
The National Women's T20 Tournament will begin on Wednesday (tomorrow) in Karachi. The 18-day tournament will see five teams – Challengers, Conquerors, Invincibles, Stars and Strikers, competing against one another with each team playing eight matches with a total of 22 matches slated to take place till 24 May.
The T20 matches will be played at the National Bank Stadium and Oval Ground, with first ball of each match to be bowled at 3pm. The opening day will see Strikers competing against National Women's One-Day Champions Stars at the National Bank Stadium, while Conquerors will take on Invincibles at the Oval Ground.
To make the tournament more competitive, the teams finishing second and third on the points table will face off in a Qualifier on 22 May, with the winner advancing to meet the top-ranked team in the final on 24 May. The final will be played at the National Bank Stadium.
A total of 80 cricketers will participate in the tournament, which carries a prize pool of over PKR three Million. The champions will receive PKR 1.5 million, while the runners-up will take home PKR one million.
Pakistan national team captain Fatima Sana will lead Conquerors, while opening batter Gull Feroza will captain Strikers. Muneeba Ali, the only Pakistan women batter to score a T20I century will lead Invincibles, while all-rounder Rameen Shamim will lead Challengers. Sidra Amin, who was Pakistan's top run-getter in the recently concluded ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier, will lead Stars.
Captains' while speaking exclusively to PCB Digital on the eve of the tournament expressed their confidence on team's preparations.
Challengers captain Rameen Shamim: "We have made plans for the tournament with the coaching staff and will try to execute them on the field.
"We have a balanced squad with all departments covered and we will aim to produce good results in every match of the tournament."
Conquerors captain Fatima Sana: "We will try to do well in the T20 tournament. All the players are eager to showcase their skills and perform well for the team.
"Our team couldn't win the final of the One-Day Tournament, but this is a T20 event and we will try not to repeat the same mistakes and do well in this competition."
Invincibles captain Muneeba Ali: "We will take one game at a time and will try to win the opening match to gain momentum in the tournament.
"I will try to contribute as much in team's better performance in the tournament."
Stars captain Sidra Amin: "Our team had won the previous One-Day Tournament, so we will be aiming high in the forthcoming T20 tournament.
"We have had domestic tournaments regularly in Karachi, so we are familiar with the conditions and are confident of achieving better results in the tournament."
Strikers captain Gull Feroza: "We have had a good preparation camp leading up to the tournament and the young players in our side are ready to perform when given the opportunity.
"I am optimistic the team will perform well and give better results in the tournament."

Babar, Rizwan demoted as PCB announces central contracts
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has demoted star batter Babar Azam and One-Day International (ODI) captain Mohammad Rizwan from the A to the B category, as it announced central contracts for 2025-26. Compared to last year's list of 27 contracted players, the PCB has expanded the pool to 30, including 12 fresh additions, highlighting the emergence of promising new talent and the Board's strategic focus on squad depth and future development. They are: Aamir Jamal, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Muhammad Irfan Khan and Usman Khan – all in Category (D). According to details, last year the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed five former national team players — Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, and Saqlain Mushtaq — as mentors for a new project, the Champions Cup. They were each paid a monthly salary of PKR 5 million. However, in recent months, the decision was made to discontinue the Champions Cup, meaning the mentors were no longer needed. Shoaib Malik had already resigned, but the other four former cricketers continue to receive their monthly salaries. Sources revealed that the PCB has sent termination letters to Saqlain Mushtaq and Waqar Younis. However, under their contracts, they are entitled to four months' salary, during which time the board may still assign them work. Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq have been retained by the board on a permanent basis, but so far, they have not been given any new responsibilities. Sources also said that there is a possibility of their monthly salaries being reduced, and they have already been verbally informed about this. It is worth noting that all five mentors had faced continuous criticism for receiving PKR 5 million per month. Initially, the PCB waited for the mentors to resign voluntarily, but under the contract, early termination entitled them to four months' salary (PKR 20 million), so no one left their positions. Consequently, the authorities decided to terminate two of them while retaining the services of the other two permanently. Central contracts overhaul The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to introduce major changes to the new central contracts for players, with significant reshuffling likely in Category D, sources revealed on Saturday. According to sources, discussions over the new contracts have entered the final stages, with several players set to be dropped and a number of new players likely to be included. While some players could also be handed central contracts for the first time. Consultations have already been held with coaches, the director of high performance, the finance department and the International cricket department. Sources confirmed that cricketers no longer part of any of the three formats will almost certainly be excluded. Among those unlikely to cut are Aamir Jamal, Mohammad Huraira, Haseebullah, Usman Khan and Mohammad Ali. On the other hand, Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris, Sufyan Muqeem, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman are expected to be awarded central contracts. The names of Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz and Sahibzada Farhan have also been under discussion, with their inclusion a possibility. The current three-year financial model for central contracts is now in its final year. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will announce the new contracts officially after receiving approval from PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. For the unversed, Pakistan's squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 is likely to be comprised of 18 players, three more than the usual number. According to the details, the national men's selection committee has started initial deliberation for the contingent and will now consult with T20I captain Salman Ali Agha and head coach Mike Hesson, who returned to the country earlier today after the white-ball series against West Indies. Sources further told that after the consultation between the selection committee, captain Agha and coach Hesson, the list of shortlisted will be sent for approval from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with the formal announcement expected in the next two to three days. The insiders further revealed that the Pakistan squad for the upcoming assignments may be comprised of 18 players, with emerging pacers Salman Mirza and Ahmed Daniyal likely to be called up.

Clutch Maxwell leads Australia to T20 series win over South Africa
CAIRNS: Glenn Maxwell took a brilliant catch before smashing a half-century under pressure to help Australia overcome a dogged South Africa by two wickets and seal the three-match Twenty20 series in Cairns on Saturday. In response to South Africa's 172-7, Australia were in trouble at 122-6 in the 14th over before Maxwell stepped up with an unbeaten 62 off 36 balls. There was a late twist when South Africa quick Corbin Bosch dismissed Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis with consecutive deliveries. But Maxwell crunched a boundary on the penultimate ball of the match before celebrating with gusto. Hot favourites Australia won the first match but were stunned by a 52-run defeat in game two before moving to Cairns in northern Queensland, which hosted its first T20 international. 'It was a little nerve-racking,' Maxwell said. 'I tried to stay on strike as much as I could and cash in on anything loose.' Australia captain Mitchell Marsh elected to field in helpful conditions for seam bowlers, a contrast to the batting-friendly surfaces used in the opening two games in Darwin. Veteran quick Josh Hazlewood rebounded from an errant performance in game two by dismissing captain Aiden Markram for one in the first over. Lhuan-dre Pretorius hit a quick-fire 24 before falling to Ellis, bringing to the crease Dewald Brevis who smashed a South African T20 record of 125 not out in game two. He crunched his sixth delivery onto the roof before a diving Maxwell dropped a tough one-handed chance at long-on. Brevis motored to his half-century off 22 balls. South Africa's innings ran out of steam and their total appeared well short when Marsh dominated a 66-run opening partnership with Travis Head. But South Africa hit back with the quick wickets of Head (19) and Josh Inglis for a first ball duck. Marsh made 54 before holing out to 19-year-old quick Kwena Maphaka, who later in the 11th over dismissed Cameron Green (nine). Australia's collapse of 6-56 was complete when in-form Tim David (17) and Aaron Hardie (one) were dismissed before Maxwell took over. The Australian players wore black armbands in honour of former captain and coach Bob Simpson, who died at the age of 89. The three-match One-Day International series between the teams starts in Cairns on Tuesday.
