Shoaib crowned Federal Cup champion

The curtains fell on the 37th OGDCL Federal Cup National Ranking Tennis Championships with a spectacular and action-packed final day at the PTF-SDA Tennis Complex, Islamabad. The prestigious championship, now in its 37th edition, is organized annually by the Islamabad Tennis Association. This year's tournament featured over 120 players competing across six categories: Men's Singles & Doubles, Ladies' Singles, Boys' U18 Singles, Boys' U14 Singles, and Girls' U12 Singles. A total of PKR 850,000 was distributed among winners and runners-up as prize money and travel allowances. Due to a thunderstorm and rain in the capital city, the Men's Singles Final — originally scheduled for 4:00 pm — started later than planned. However, the delay did not dampen the intensity or quality of tennis that followed. In a thrilling showdown, 23-year-old top seed Muhammad Shoaib of PAF successfully defended his title against Muzammil Murtaza 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4 in an exhilarating three-set battle that lasted over 2 hours and 58 minutes. Muzammil started strong, breaking Shoaib early and taking a 3-0 lead but Shoaib quickly adjusted his strategy, breaking back in the fifth game and forcing a tiebreak after both players held serve. In the tiebreak, Shoaib's early mini-break and consistent pressure earned him a hard-fought 8-6 win in the first set. Muzammil bounced back with renewed focus in the second set, breaking Shoaib's serve in the fourth and sixth games to level the match with a 6-2 win. In the deciding set, both players showcased exceptional baseline rallies and strategic cross-court play, reaching 4-4. Shoaib then delivered a clinical performance, breaking Muzammil's serve in the ninth game with powerful down-the-line winners. He maintained his composure while serving for the match, forcing unforced errors from his opponent and sealing the final set 6-4. The enthralling final was officiated by ITF White Badge Umpire Husnain Mehmood. Earlier in the day, in the Junior 18 & Under Singles Final, Muhammad Salar emerged as the champion, defeating promising Islamabad youngster M. Hazik Aasim in a competitive straight-sets match. Muhammad Shafik, Director Commercial - Air Blue, Majid Bashir, President Islamabad Tennis Association, and the President Pakistan Tennis Federation Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi attended as guests of honor.

Tomorrow's encounter will be live-streamed on Tapmad in Pakistan and on PCB Official YouTube channel outside Pakistan. The match will also be broadcast live on Geo Super. The winner of the tournament will not just take the trophy home, but will also receive PKR 1.5 million, while the runners-up will get PKR one million. Conquerors have the chance to complete the double of domestic Women's events as they are also the reigning champions of National Women's One-Day Tournament, which culminated in December 2024. In addition, individual awards will be presented to players for outstanding performances in the 22-match tournament, which began on 7 May. Players to watch out for in the final Conquerors topped the points table with five wins from eight outings. They qualified directly for the final owing to a superior net run-rate compared to the Challengers and Stars. Skipper Fatima is leading the batting charts with 339 runs from seven innings, with two half-centuries. She has scored runs at the strike-rate of 163.77. In the bowling unit, Fatima is among the wickets, having claimed 10 wickets from eight matches at an economy rate of 7.08. She has been well supported by Syeda Aroob Shah, who with her leg-spin bowling has also bagged 10 wickets from eight outings, with three for 24 her best figures in the match. Conquerors captain Fatima Sana: "Our team has done well in the tournament and we are focused on producing a strong performance in the final against the Stars. "Our batters and bowlers have delivered consistently and I expect similar performances from the team in the final. "Stars team has done well. They had a good Qualifier against the Challengers and we expect an exciting game of cricket tomorrow." Stars like Conquerors finished the group stage with 10 points, but on below net run-rate they had to feature in a Qualifier against Rameen Shamim's Challenger. They edged past the Challengers by six runs to secure their place in Saturday's final. Sidra Amin, like her Conquerors' counterpart, has been prolific with the bat. The right-handed batter has scored 328 from nine innings, including four half-centuries at an average of 46.86 and a strike-rate of 129.64. In the bowling department, spinners have done wonders for Stars. Tuba Hassan and Anosha Nasir have taken 12 wickets each from nine matches. Leg-spinner Tuba has bowled at an economy rate of 5.77, while left-arm spinner Anosha has maintained an economy rate of 6.09. Waheeda Akhtar has snapped 10 wickets at an economy of 5.07. Stars captain Sidra Amin: "Our team consists of young players. They have shown great resilience throughout the tournament and our spinners have played a pivotal role in helping us reach the final. "We have beaten the Conquerors twice in the group stage and we will look to carry that momentum into tomorrow's big game as well."

Bangladesh tour of Pakistan confirmed

Bangladesh were initially scheduled to play five T20Is in Lahore and Faisalabad. Photo: AFP/File The Bangladesh cricket team's tour of Pakistan has been confirmed on Tuesday, ending uncertainty surrounding the series. According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), now three T20Is, all in Lahore, will be player instead of five which were initally scheduled, with the dates to be announced soon. The confirmation came after an extended meeting between PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Nazmul Abedeen and President Farooq Ahmed. Following the successful talks, both boards agreed to move forward with the series despite earlier concerns. The three-match T20I series will mark an important step in cricketing relations between the two nations. PCB chairman expressed his gratitude to the BCB leadership for finalising the tour and reaffirming their commitment to bilateral cricket. Bangladesh will be led by experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, who was officially appointed as the T20I captain earlier this year after Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down. Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan has been named vice-captain for both the UAE and Pakistan tour. It is pertinent to mention that the series had faced uncertainty due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as the mid-season postponement of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Originally, Bangladesh was scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on May 21 in two groups, with a five-match T20I series set to begin on May 25 in Faisalabad. However, logistical adjustments and security considerations have now led to a revised three-match series, all to be hosted in Lahore. Bangladesh squad for T20Is in UAE and Pakistan: Litton Das (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan (vice-capt), Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam Tentative schedule 27 May – 1st T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM 29 May – 2nd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM 31 May – 3rd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 8:00 PM ICC meeting The International Cricket Council's (ICC) annual conference is scheduled to take place from July 17 to 20 in Singapore, with significant decisions expected on various matters concerning the future of the game. The meeting will be chaired for the first time by ICC chairman Jay Shah, who recently took over the role. This year's conference is expected to see some pivotal discussions and possible changes to the sport's playing conditions and administrative frameworks. One of the main items on the agenda is the review of several recent recommendations made by the ICC Cricket Committee, led by former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Among the most notable proposals is a change to the current One-Day International (ODI) playing conditions, suggesting the use of a single ball from the 25th over onward. This move is intended to revive the art of reverse swing, which has diminished under the existing two-ball rule. In addition, the conference will deliberate on the introduction of in-game clocks in Test cricket to enforce the completion of 90 overs per day. The system would be modeled after the over-rate regulation seen in white-ball formats, where a strict 60-second interval is maintained between overs. Another important proposal expected to be discussed involves the restructuring of the U-19 Men's World Cup. The ICC is considering transitioning the tournament from its traditional 50-over format to the T20 format, bringing it in line with the recently introduced U-19 Women's World Cup. This year's annual gathering will also feature elections to the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC), where three representatives from ICC Associate Members will be chosen. The electoral process will be conducted by a voting college consisting of 45 Associate Members, and the new appointees will serve a two-year term. While these proposals have been acknowledged, there has been no indication that the ICC Board has formally addressed them, and sources believe the likelihood of acceptance remains slim due to a lack of backing from major full member boards.
