Man United relegation odds boost as Bruno Fernandes reportedly rejects Al-Hilal

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Man United's relegation odds were slashed immediately after their Europa League defeat but have since reversed after reports Bruno Fernandes have
It has been an awful season for Man United fans but they could soon light at the end of the tunnel with the news that captain Bruno Fernandes has reportedly rejecting an approach by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The Portuguese international was heavily linked to joining the the Saudi club but has turned down the club despite being offered a huge £700,000 per weekly wage - which is around double what he is earning at Old Trafford.
Fernandes, 30, has been by far one of United's very few standout players this season after the Red Devil's experienced a tumultuous season which saw their manager sacked, a woeful defence of their FA Cup title and finishing just three places above the relegation zone - their worst ever finish in the Premier League era to date.
The boost could be seen as a catalyst to project United back in the top five conversation instead of finding themselves in the very bottom half of the Premier League table. However, this would only merely paper over the cracks keeping hold of their club captain as Ruben Amorim looks to recruit the squad he wants for next season.
Amorim, who joined from Sporting Lisbon in November, admitted he originally wanted to join in the summer to make his impact but was persuaded by the board to move to Old Trafford when the job was made available after Ten Hag's sacking. Since then he has only achieved a 38% win record at United with 16 wins from 42 matches in all competitions last season which included the Europa League final defeat last month.
Securing Champions League football would have propelled United back up to the elite platform in Europe once again but were denied by Tottenham in Bilbao meaning the three-time European champions go into next season with no European football for the first time in 11 years.
United's head coach is tasked to show huge improvements in the first-team squad next season with only Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup the three competitions they will be in for next season but even then, they remain one of the most popular bets placed to be relegated from the top tier of English football for the first time since 1974.
Could Man United really be facing a relegation battle?
After their Europa League defeat, United's odds were slashed to 16/1 to be relegated but some bookies have reacted to the news of Fernandes staying as a positive one and is now trading best price at 20/1 at the moment with Betfred. Many bookies remain the same at the moment with bet365, William Hill, Sky Bet and Paddy Power all trading at 16/1 for the Red Devils to drop down to the Championship.
However, despite the somewhat surprising price on one of the most successful clubs in England with 19 league titles, the bookies have shorter odds on more than half the league after. No surprises that newcomers Sunderland (1/3), Burnley (4/9) and Leeds United (4/5) are all the main favourites to drop down.
Even last season's overachievers Nottingham Forest, who are in the Europa Conference League next season, are priced at 9/1 along with Bournemouth as Nuno Espirito Santo's side deal with the schedule demands that European football offers in an already compact season.

Newcastle's first summer signing breaks silence on move - 'It's a pleasure'

Exciting teenage star Antonio Cordero has put pen to paper on a long-term deal with Newcastle United and is set to officially move to Tyneside on July 1 when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires Newcastle United have sealed a deal to sign highly-rated Spanish youngster Antonio Cordero. The teenage starlet will move to Tyneside on a free transfer when his current deal with Malaga expires on July 1. Despite being just 18, Cordero has already notched up 60 appearances for the Andalusian outfit, contributing significantly to their survival in the Spanish Segunda Division this season following their promotion the previous year. Highly-promising Cordero chipped in with six goals and seven assists in the league ‌ The youngster's arrival is subject to completion of the Premier League's registration process and the player obtaining a UK visa. But he couldn't hide his excitement when speaking out on Thursday about the move. ‌ "It's truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure," he remarked. "I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it? "It's a big step, and that's one of the reasons I'm here. I'm happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already." Cordero's exploits for both club and country - after excelling for Spain's youth sides - had put clubs across Europe on red alert. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been credited as holding an interest Ultimately, it was the Magpies under the guidance of outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell who offered him the most compelling route forward, convincing Cordero to ply his trade in the Premier League. "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe," remarked Mitchell. "He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences." Dutch side Ajax are being tipped as favourites to take Cordero on a season-long loan for 2025-26.

Rangers appoint new boss Russell Martin on three-year contract

The 39-year-old former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss has signed a three-year contract. He will be joined at Ibrox by assistant head coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. ✍️ Our new Head Coach, Russell Martin. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but was sacked in December following one win from their first 16 games. Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of former captain Barry Ferguson, having dismissed Philippe Clement in February. Ex-Scotland defender Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, is tasked with wrestling power back from the other side of Glasgow after Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish football continued with a 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons. 'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' he told the club's website. 'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. 'There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.' ✍️ We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Russell Martin as Head Coach of our men's first team on a three-year deal. Full Details ⬇️ — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 Martin's arrival is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday, while new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday. Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who led the recruitment process alongside Thelwell, said: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate.'
