Pasar Tani Jepak launches tomorrow to boost local economy
BINTULU (Aug 1): Pasar Tani Jepak is set to open its doors tomorrow (Aug 2), providing a vibrant platform for local entrepreneurs and small traders to showcase their products and grow their businesses.
Conveniently located near GiatMARA Jepak, the market will operate every Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 1pm.
With over 20 stalls, visitors can look forward to various fresh farm produce, traditional delicacies, beverages, and locally made products.
Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee highlighted that the launch of Pasar Tani Jepak aims to boost the local economy by empowering small-scale entrepreneurs and enhancing community involvement in the agri-food sector.
'This market serves as an important platform to uplift the income of our people and to increase community engagement in the agri-food industry,' he said during the canopy handover ceremony for stall operators at the DUN Jepak Service Centre yesterday.
'It aligns with the aspirations of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.'
In a move to make the market more inclusive and dynamic, it will also feature car boot sales and flea market-style stalls, encouraging participation from different community groups.
To mark the grand opening, a variety of events will be held over the weekend, including 'Fama's Jualan Agro Madani', car boot sales, and community-driven activities.
Iskandar also extended his appreciation to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Fama, and other agencies for their continuous support.

Delivering the keynote speech at the Sarawak Government Education Initiative Briefing, Fazzrudin, who is also the Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, stressed that students are not merely beneficiaries of government support, but key players in the state's long-term transformation. 'Failing to plan is planning to fail. Just as the government has a long-term strategy for Sarawak through PCDS 2030, you too must have a strategy for your life – your studies, your career, your contribution. You are the future of this state,' said Fazzrudin. He explained that the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which serves as a blueprint for economic growth, environmental protection and social inclusion, was created with the younger generation in mind. 'PCDS 2030 was created for you, the young leaders, so that you can reach greater heights in the future,' said Fazzruddin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman. He highlighted Sarawak's plans to attract investors, build new industrial sectors, and lead in green and hydrogen-based economies would only succeed if the state had the local talent to fill the jobs being created. 'We need you to step up. If we can achieve this, Sarawak's future for the next 50 to 100 years will be secure,' he stressed. He likened the government's role to that of a hardworking parent striving to secure a better future for their children and called for the students to honour these sacrifices by excelling in their studies and contributing meaningfully to their communities and state. The briefing formed part of a statewide outreach initiative, bringing together senior political secretaries, state agencies and over 400 students ranging from foundation to diploma level. S'wak to be first state in M'sia to set up dedicated D2EI unit, says Premier

The unit, which adopts the D2EI theme of Sarawak's Women's Day 2025, embodies the state's commitment to a people-centred development approach that upholds fairness in diversity regardless of geography, gender, ethnicity, religion or ability. At the Sarawak Women's Day 2025 celebration held at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today, Abang Johari said the state government intends to strengthen women's involvement in high-growth sectors. 'This includes support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and start-up assistance. We have grants from the government and the state holds some influence in Affin Bank as a major stakeholder. 'We have asked the bank to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he said. He added the D2EI principles align with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which also emphasises inclusivity, and believed these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. Meanwhile, Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry is working with key organisations including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 30% Club, and the Asian Women Leadership University College (AWLUC) to further strengthen the direction and implementation of the D2EI initiative. In this regard, she said the ministry is seeking support and sponsorship from the Sarawak government to fund studies for selected individuals to pursue the Master of Arts in Leadership Development programme at AWLUC, which costs RM105,000 in total (RM35,000 per student for the entire duration). Abang Johari approved the request, stating that the funding would be disbursed through Yayasan Sarawak. DBKU to build floral garden inspired by Singapore's iconic Gardens by the Bay

According to Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman, the proposed garden will be located near Jalan Astana, where the existing Orchid Garden will be relocated and incorporated into the new development. 'DBKU will relocate the current Orchid Garden and develop a new floral garden on a 16-hectare site, making it more accessible to the public and positioning it as a major attraction for both tourists and plant lovers,' he said. He made the remarks during his speech at the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi, Petra Jaya here today. He said the development will draw inspiration and reference from the Gardens by the Bay project in Singapore, and that DBKU intends to work with experienced consultants to ensure the project meets international standards. The floral garden is part of a broader urban greening initiative by DBKU, which also includes the upcoming Bamboo Gallery Bamboo – an eco-architecture exhibition centre that will feature local bamboo species and information on environmental sustainability. Spanning 25 hectares, the Bamboo Gallery Bamboo is expected to be a new recreational destination in Kuching and will be developed around the Jalan Crookshank area, near Taman Perpaduan. 'We aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy added. The projects align with DBKU's vision to transform Kuching into a low-carbon city by 2030, in line with the Sarawak Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030). 'DBKU plays a vital role in planning, developing, maintaining, and enhancing northern Kuching, particularly areas like the Kuching Waterfront, Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, the Botanical Garden, and Taman Perpaduan. 'These are all sources of pride for city residents,' said Hilmy, affirming that these sustainability- and innovation-driven projects reflect DBKU's commitment to making Kuching a greener, more livable, and globally competitive city.
