Derby leader calls A38 decision 'divisive' but vows to minimise disruption

Yahoo09-07-2025
The leader of Derby City Council says the decision to construct major A38 upgrades is 'divisive' but will do everything she can to minimise disruption.
Labour councillor Nadine Peatfield said the local authority had 'no influence' on the Government's decision to transform one of Derby's busiest roads but has always wanted the best outcome for the city. She added that the decision will support the delivery of thousands of new homes.
The huge project is set to see significant changes to three key islands on the major route at Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton. The plan is to expand the road with more lanes and create flyovers and underpasses with the aim of easing congestion and quickening journey times.

But it is currently unclear how much the scheme will cost in total with an initial estimate of £250 million likely to have escalated. It is also unclear when work will start and how long construction will take.
Meanwhile, there remains serious concern regarding the negative environmental impacts of the project. The Stop The A38 expansion group said in their latest statement that their campaigning has not yet reached the end of the road.
Serious concerns include the loss of thousands of trees at Markeaton Park and increased carbon emissions and air pollution. Campaigners described the scheme as a 'polluting, destructive and pointless road scheme to line the pockets of the private developers'.

The city council was asked for its stance on the go-ahead and whether or not Derby's road network will cope when construction work starts. Councillor Peatfield said the council will be 'doing everything we can to minimise disruption and impact '.
She said: 'We recognise that the Government's decision to progress this project is a divisive one here in Derby. Whilst we have had no influence on the decision itself, throughout we've consistently aimed for the best outcome for Derby and will continue to do so.
'It's important to recognise, however, that this initiative will help deliver around 15,000 much-needed homes for our region.
'Moving forward, we understand both sides of this challenge and are committed to doing everything we can to minimise disruption and impact. We will work closely with the East Midlands Mayor to advocate for active travel infrastructure to be included, supporting walking and cycling, so that this scheme benefits all forms of transport. Additionally, we'll keep striving for measures that enhance both the environment and biodiversity."

Porsche Macan and Toyota Yaris Cross top UK family car value retention list

New analysis from Carmoola's Car Depreciation Index, developed in partnership with vehicle data specialists Brego, reveals the family cars that hold their value best — and those that lose it fastest. The findings come following a pivotal point in the UK car market. July is traditionally the busiest month for family car sales, according to Carmoola's internal sales data, as buyers prepare for the summer travel season. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Drawing on Brego sales data from more than 40 million UK transactions in 2025, Carmoola examined price trends for family cars — defined as hatchbacks, compact SUVs, MPVs, saloons and estates — over a three-year or 36,000-mile period. The Porsche Macan emerged as the slowest-depreciating model, losing just 19.9% of its original value, followed closely by the Toyota Yaris Cross at 20.2%. These figures stand in stark contrast to the market average for family cars, which saw values fall by 43.4% over the same period. At the other end of the scale, the Jaguar I-PACE lost 66.8% of its value, while the Audi E-Tron dropped by 65.6%. Based on average depreciation rates, sales volumes and Jaguar UK's official new car pricing, Carmoola estimates that I-PACE owners collectively saw £432 million wiped from their vehicles' value over three years. When broken down by body type, MPVs proved the most resilient, depreciating by just 28.8% on average, while saloons were the weakest performers, losing nearly 36% of their value. Aidan Rushby, founder and CEO of Carmoola, said depreciation remains 'the largest hidden cost of ownership,' and that choosing a car that retains its value can 'save families thousands when it is time to upgrade or sell.' He added that the rate at which a car loses value depends on 'everything from the brand's reputation and model popularity to running costs, fuel type and how well it fits with evolving consumer needs.' Even colour plays a part: while neutral tones such as black, grey and silver 'often have broad appeal,' more vibrant shades like yellow or orange 'can perform surprisingly well' because 'buyers who want a yellow car are specifically looking for one and are less likely to be swayed by price alone.' Rushby said the Car Depreciation Index is designed to 'highlight these trends and help people make more informed decisions' when buying new or nearly new vehicles. Marks & Spencer makes changes to people leadership team

British department store Marks & Spencer (M&S) has appointed former Asda executive Hayley Tatum as its new chief people officer, effective from October 2025. Tatum will replace Sarah Findlater, who has held the position of people director for the last three years and has been with the company for 27 years. Findlater will depart in the autumn of 2025. In a LinkedIn post, Findlater stated: 'It's been a real privilege to grow through so many leadership roles and to work alongside some truly fabulous people who've inspired me every step of the way, and never more so than during the three months I recently spent working in stores alongside our incredible store colleagues. 'I leave the business at a high point – after three years of commercial growth, cultural transformation and deep operational change.' The new appointment was announced by M&S CEO Stuart Machin through a post on LinkedIn. Machin indicated that Tatum will be joining the executive committee and will commence her induction by engaging with staff in stores and distribution centres. Machin added: 'Having worked with Hayley previously, I know that she has a very hands-on and collaborative leadership style, crafted through her many roles over the years in HR and store operations. 'We have lots to do in the years ahead to transform M&S and importantly become even closer to our customers and closer to our colleagues. 'Our aim is to be the most trusted brand with a high-performance culture. Hayley joins at a critical time as we accelerate the pace of change across all of our people plans, attracting and developing the very best talent in the industry and rethinking engagement and performance.' In July 2025, the retailer expanded its Bigger Pack, Better Value range for family shoppers.
