Welshpool mother issues plea to parents after teen's river death
Holli's family and friends should have celebrated her 16th birthday in June, but instead they are having to gather on 9 August to mark the first anniversary of her death.
"Nearly 12 months later and I still can't get my head around it," said Michelle, a mother of seven."I wish she'd never gone down there and I wish somebody would wake me up from this nightmare, but it's not going to happen."She was always happy and very much loved by her friends."Michelle said she had had conversations with Holli about water safety in the past and asked her the day before her death to play safely by the river.A full inquest is yet to be heard, but Michelle said Holli died after getting caught in the backwash of a weir. A friend tried to help her out but could not manage against the force of the water, she said."I don't want any other family to go through what we're going through based on poor choices, just because the water looks inviting."Michelle is now trying to raise awareness about water safety by sharing her own experience on social media and organising fundraising events for charities that educate children about the dangers.
Holli's death was one of 193 accidental water-related fatalities in the UK last year, according to the National Water Safety Forum.Its figures suggest that inland waterways, such as rivers, canals and reservoirs, continue to be the leading locations for drownings, accounting for 61% of accidental fatalities in 2024.A dedicated water safety and drowning prevention strategy was brought in by the Welsh government in 2020.Water Safety Wales, a group which brings together organisations including the Welsh government, also aims to cut the number of drowning casualties by promoting "a consistent and common approach to water safety".Its figures show there were 54 water-related fatalities in Wales in 2024, with the figure remaining between 48 and 55 between 2020 and 2023."I plead with all parents to speak with their children so they understand the dangers of water," said Michelle. "It can take a life. It took my Holli and I really don't want another family to suffer."

Cops release CCTV photo in hunt for man after victim ‘sexually assaulted' on city bus
COPS have released CCTV of a man they are hunting in connection with an alleged sexual assault. The victim was targeted while travelling on a bus in Oxford last month. Both the victim and alleged attacker got on the number 35 bus opposite a Sainsbury's in St Aldates. They were sitting next to each other at the time of the alleged assault, which occurred at around 4.50pm on July 3. Thames Valley Police said that the offender touched the victim inappropriately over their clothing. It was confirmed by the force that the victim was a man in his 20s. The victim got off the bus, while their attacker stayed on until he reached his stop. Investigating officer PC Joshua Longmate called on anyone with information to get in touch. He said: 'We are releasing an image of a man who we believe may have vital information about this incident. 'If you recognise him, or if this is you, we would ask you to please contact Thames Valley Police via 101 or make a report online quoting reference 43250333562. Tragedy as man dies in horror plunge at Scots waterfall
A MAN has tragically died after a horror fall at a Scottish waterfall popular with swimmers. A major rescue mission was launched at the Reekie Linn Waterfall near Kilry yesterday morning. 2 Emergency crews were scrambled to the beauty spot on the River Isla in Angus at around 11.55am. The alarm was raised after police received reports that a person had fallen into the water. Several specialist resources raced to the scene alongside police officers and fire crews. But tragically, a 65-year-old man's body was recovered from the water a short time later. Police have said that they are not treating the man's death as suspicious. Photos from the scene show officers working with specialist crews as the search operation got underway. Two police cars were seen parked on the road near the waterfall. The large motors blocked the road, stopping the public from accessing the beauty spot. Two fire engines were also spotted in the area. A Police Scotland spokesperson told STV News: 'Around 11.55am on Wednesday, August 6, we received a report of person having fallen at the Reekie Linn waterfall near Kilry. Toddler plunges to death at waterpark after 'slipping from dad's arms' 'Emergency services attended, and the body of a 65-year-old man was recovered. 'The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.' A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: 'We were alerted at 11.52am on Wednesday, August 6 to attend Reekie Linn Waterfall near Kilry. 'Operations Control mobilised two appliances and several specialist resources to the scene to assist emergency service partners.' It comes weeks after a woman tragically died after falling at a different waterfall on the hottest day of the year. On July 12, we told how a 63-year-old woman passed away after falling at Campsie Glen in front of a distraught crowd. Shocked visitors could be seen gathered near the falls which are accessed via a footpath which rises around 200m. Police sealed off a nearby car park with blue tape and were stopping drivers from entering after the accident around 12.35pm. The woman was treated by paramedics but could not be saved. 2
