Patients divided over new identity checks in hospital

THERE has been a mixed reaction to March and March requests to see patient identity documents and appointment cards aimed at preventing foreign nationals from using public health facilities.
Last Friday, the POST spoke to patients outside the Addington Hospital, some of whom described it as 'time-wasting' and 'inhumane', while others were pleased not having to wait for a long period of time.
- A mother of a six-year-old said: 'Earlier this month, my daughter underwent an emergency operation after her appendix ruptured. She was hospitalised and we had to wait in long lines every day to get into the hospital because people had to produce their identity documents or appointment cards. During visiting hours, my husband had to wait for about 20 minutes before he could enter.
'It is a waste of time and is wrong. Nobody should be denied care or medication. It should not matter if you are South African or from another country. We are all humans. They should stop what they are doing. I brought my daughter for a check-up and we had to wait again. It is not right."
- Another patient, 44, said: 'It is sad as not everyone can afford private care. If foreign nationals could afford to go to private hospitals they would. Nobody wants to wait in long queues. If I could afford medical aid, I would not be here. I think this is unnecessary and should be stopped.'
- A 75-year-old woman, who was accompanied by her caregiver, a Zimbabwean, said she was 'appalled'.
'I asked them why they are doing this, only to be told they don't want foreigners in the hospital. I told them they had no right to do that, but I was told that if I did not like it, I must go elsewhere. Who gave them the authority to decide who can use the hospital? My caregiver has been with me for 10 years and lived in South Africa for almost 20 years. She is legally in South Africa, and should not have been treated like a criminal.'
- A 77-year-old woman, who arrived to collect her medication for diabetes and hypertension, said she was pleased.
'I come to the hospital every month and this is the first time I did not sit the entire day. I came in at 7am and was done by 10am. I think it is a great thing they are doing for us.'
- A 60-year-old man, who had a doctor's appointment, said: 'I had a stroke and sitting in the hospital for a long time can be tiring, but within two hours I was done. It also only took 30 minutes to collect my medication. I feel this should have been done a long time ago.'
- A 54-year-old woman, originally from Congo, was turned away at the entrance. She said she was concerned as she was supposed to collect her medication for hypertension.
The woman said she had been living in South Africa for 19 years.
'I showed them my documents and said I needed my medication, but they did not care. I have been coming to the hospital for 14 years and had no problems. I am worried as I only have a few tablets left. What am I going to do when it is finished? I cannot buy this medication over the counter.'
- A 26-year-old woman, originally from Somalia, said she was concerned as she was eight-months pregnant.
'I was supposed to have my final check-up before I give birth next month. I pleaded with them, but they told me I was not South African, so I must have my baby in a private hospital. I stood outside the hospital hoping they would have some mercy, but they did not care.'

The women, aged between 49 and 60, reportedly entered the maternity ward and disrupted services by questioning patients and demanding to see their identity documents. Police were called to the scene after the suspects were locked inside one of the labour wards, where both staff and patients felt their rights had been violated. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the women were arrested and charged with contravention of the National Health Act and public violence, among other offences. Operation Dudula, an anti-migrant group, launched a nationwide campaign in June aimed at preventing undocumented foreign nationals from accessing healthcare services at public facilities. The group has been blocking foreign nationals from receiving treatment across Gauteng, claiming public healthcare should be reserved for South African citizens only. 'If your body isn't used to high-fibre foods, increasing it too quickly can cause bloating, cramps, and constipation,' says Grasso, the nutritional expert who popularised fibremaxxing in her viral videos. 'You need to start slowly, increase your fibre intake by 5 grams a week and drink plenty of water.' Holistic nutritionist Alissa Bianchini, speaking to Food & Wine, agrees: 'This trend can be incredibly beneficial, but it's all about the pace. Fibre needs water to do its job; without it, digestion can get messy.' Even unbuttered popcorn is a fibre-rich snack when air-popped. The health perks of fibre: Why your future self will thank you Gut health: Fibre feeds the 'good' bacteria in your gut, improving digestion and immune function. MSF says its teams have witnessed patients being turned away from more than half of the 15 healthcare facilities they visited in Gauteng. Groups of between two and 10 individuals, dressed in civilian clothing, have been stationed at clinic gates or inside facilities, demanding identification and refusing entry to those they deem non-South African. In some cases, security staff and healthcare workers were allegedly working in collusion with these anti-migrant groups. "This conduct is highly unacceptable," said MSF spokesperson Jane Rabothata, stressing that South Africa's Constitution guarantees everyone the right to access healthcare services and prohibits the refusal of emergency treatment. Many pregnant women with high-risk conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and HIV, have gone without essential monitoring and treatment, said the organisation. Some HIV patients have reportedly been without their medication for over two weeks, placing their health and public health more broadly at serious risk. One pregnant patient, 16 weeks into her term, told MSF she wished she could terminate her pregnancy because she could not access care, yet feared the consequences of doing so. "Defaulting HIV treatment can have serious complications for individuals and create a broader public health concern," Rabothata warned. However, not everyone agrees with MSF's position. Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, leader of the March and March Movement, told IOL: "In light of what our Constitution says, illegal immigrants are not even supposed to be in the country. They're supposed to be taken and deported. "In the instance that they need emergency health care, they are welcome to access it but from there, they are meant to be deported. They are not supposed to be on a list for chronic medication, surgeries, getting medical treatment month after month and having multiple babies in the country. That is not what the Constitution says." Ngobese-Zuma claimed some illegal immigrants are stealing medication and taking it to their countries and starting businesses. "This is compromising the lives of South Africans who have no other country to go to and end up having to sleep on the floor without beds in hospitals, wait in queues or take their own money to buy medication from pharmacies." "We're not running a country on emotions, we are running for the wellbeing of the people," she said. South Africans can no longer survive having to share their medical resources with the whole of Africa." MSF emphasised that denying basic or emergency healthcare to migrants risks the spread of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, and Covid-19 conditions that do not respect borders or legal status. Untreated illnesses, they warn, could spark outbreaks, increase treatment costs, and further burden the system. The government at the time condemned the protests and reaffirmed that the right to healthcare applies to all, regardless of nationality or documentation. MSF noted that South Africa's commitments to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights reinforce that healthcare is a universal right.
