Amid claims of overhaul, new appointments of Gujarat Congress fail to enthuse party
While the appointments of district presidents after elaborate 'consultative process' largely proved to be more of reputations, the appointment of new Congress Gujarat President Amit Chavda and assembly leader of opposition Siddharth Chaudhary has failed to excite the workers.

'Clearly, the high command has failed to see beyond the family legacies in making these appointments which required a better understanding of the changed dynamics of the state politics and the challenges that the party faces now,' said a party functionary in Ahmedabad. Amit Chavda has been the President of Gujarat Congress between 2018 and 2021, what has been his success then?' He asked.

For the records Chavda back then was preceded by Bharatsinh Solanki, his cousin and son of Madhavsinh Solanki. He became the leader of opposition in January 2023 after the 2022 Gujarat election that saw Congress staging its worst ever performance.
Son of former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary, and a former union minister, Siddarth Chaudhary, has not been known for his acumen as a parliamentarian and is believed to be usually reticent and distant from the workers.
Live Events
Range of Congress leaders and workers that ET spoke to across the state seem to be echoing the sentiments in various degrees. In North Gujarat, a young leader with considerable ground swell maintained that the selection by the party high command has failed the aspirations of people who hoped that there could be some fresh blood injected in the party through the process.
While the Patidar leaders of the party were clamouring for some representation in the top echelon of the party, senior Patel leaders told ET that in spite of their repeated attempts, they failed to manage an audience with
Rahul Gandhi
. 'This is frustrating but in present condition no one is in a position to rebel. So what you will see is that everyone will toe the party line in public but steadily withdrawing from active participation, which is a bad news for Congress that has suffered its worst electoral blow in 2022 state election.'
Party sources maintain that It is learnt that the party may appoint Paresh Dhanani as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee to balance the Patidar demands. However that, according to party workers may be too little too late for the party which is practically fighting an existential crisis in the state.
A senior party functionary told ET that the high command was left with very little elbow room to operate while picking up its leaders and had to do with what it had.

After the murder, she rushed to her in-laws' house nearby and informed them that Karan had died, prompting them to rush him to the hospital, police said. He was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state with the medico-legal case (MLC) citing electrocution as the cause of death, they added. Live Events "Initially, Karan's family did not raise any allegations and even wished to waive the post-mortem examination. However, considering his relatively young age and to rule out any foul play, the post-mortem was conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said. On Wednesday, Karan's younger brother, Kunal Dev, approached the police, expressing suspicion over the circumstances surrounding his brother's death. Police said that Dev had found chats between Karan's wife and her partner where they had planned to kill her husband. A case under section 103 (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Stories of resistance and resilience, such as the rise of the Marathas , the contribution of women like Tarabai and Ahilyabai Holkar, the defiance of Sikh Gurus in the face of Mughal persecution , and tribal uprisings are in focus in the NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbook. The book, "Exploring Society: India and Beyond", released this week, is also the first in the new NCERT curriculum to introduce students to the Delhi Sultanate , Mughals , Marathas and the colonial era. Lulutox Undo At the beginning of the book is a section titled "Note on Some Darker Periods in History", where the NCERT offers context for the inclusion of sensitive and violent events, primarily war and bloodshed. It urges students to understand "the historical origin of cruel violence, abusive misrule or misplaced ambitions of power" dispassionately and states, "No one should be held responsible today for events of the past." Live Events In the new book, the chapter covering Indian history from the 13th to the 17th century - "Reshaping India's Political Map" - spans the rise and fall of the Delhi Sultanate and the resistance to it, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Mughals and the resistance to them, and the rise of the Sikhs. Describing Babur as a "brutal and ruthless conqueror, slaughtering entire populations of cities" and Aurangzeb as a military ruler who destroyed temples and gurdwaras, the NCERT's new textbook points to "many instances of religious intolerance" during the Mughal period. While it notes Akbar's reign as a "blend of brutality and tolerance" for different faiths, it also mentions that "non-Muslims were kept in a minority in the higher echelons of the administration". Akbar is portrayed as having "ordered the massacre of some 30,000 civilians" after the siege of Chittorgarh. The Marathas are depicted not only for their military might under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but also for their maritime supremacy and governance innovations. The Sikh Gurus' resistance to Mughal oppression is discussed in detail, highlighting their role in confronting injustice and preserving a distinct identity in challenging times. The textbook also delves into colonial-era revolts such as the Sanyasi-Fakir rebellion, the Indigo uprising, and the Great Rebellion of 1857, "offering students a more inclusive picture of struggle beyond the familiar narratives", said a faculty member of the textbook committee of NCERT.
