'I can't believe he said that!' - Seaman slams Carragher over Rice comments

Metro13-05-2025

David Seaman has dismissed Jamie Carragher's recent comments about Declan Rice, confidently backing the midfielder to be a central figure in Arsenal's long-term future.
Arsenal fended off strong interest from Manchester City to sign Rice for a club-record £100million deal in 2023 and the 26-year-old has quickly established himself as a fan favourite in north London.
However, the Gunners going another campaign without winning any trophies means Rice is still yet to lift any silverware – barring the Community Shield – since arriving through the doors at the Emirates.
Rice's Europa Conference League triumph with West Ham stands alone as his only major title to date and the England international will no doubt be desperate to put that right next season.
While Rice has made no indication that he could be considering his future with Arsenal, Sky Sports pundit Carragher suggested doubts could start to creep in should next season go the same way for Mikel Arteta's men.

'I don't think right now, I think maybe [that could be the case] for other players who have been there a bit longer,' the outspoken ex-Liverpool defender said following Arsenal's 2-2 draw at Anfield.
'But in terms of Declan, I think he's been Arsenal's best player this season. I think those doubts maybe kick in in another 12 months.'
Rio Ferdinand echoed these comments on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, claiming Rice could get 'itchy feet' and begin looking elsewhere if Arsenal come up short in pursuit of major trophies again next term.
However, former Arsenal goalkeeper Seaman is not in the least bit concerned about Rice agitating for a move, blasting Carragher for even entertaining the idea in the wake of Sunday's heavyweight clash on Merseyside.
Asked for his thoughts on Carragher's remarks on the Seaman Says podcast, Seaman replied: 'Wow. So we've not even finished this season and he's talking about [Arsenal] not doing anything next season… and then someone that might leave in the next season!
'Let's get Uri Geller on and ask him!'

Seaman added: 'No, I can't believe that he [Carragher] has said something like that because I'm excited about next season with Arsenal.
'They're getting better and better, they're contending consistently.
'I said at the start of this season that if you finish above Manchester City, you win the league, and then Liverpool come in.
'Then, we end up playing PSG that were a fantastic team so Declan will stay. There's no problem, not at all.'
Seaman later joked: 'He can do what he did at West Ham: win a trophy and then leave!'
The ex-England shot-stopper was stunned by the boos Trent Alexander-Arnold received at Anfield and believes the mood inside the stadium actually helped Arsenal in rescuing a point from the game.
'I think it affected Liverpool in a negative way because when you see one of your best players getting treated like that, it must have a strange affect on you,' Seaman explained.
'Whether that gave Arsenal that extra lift they needed… it did look like that.
'Liverpool got the two goals within like two minutes and I was like, 'Here we go!', and then Arsenal just steadied it and came out in the second half and, by all accounts, it looked like Mikel had given them a right rollicking at half-time.'

Tijjani Reijnders ‘really excited' to link up with Man City for Club World Cup

Tijjani Reijnders 'could not wait' to undergo his medical with Manchester City and expects to be in their squad for the Club World Cup. The 26-year-old Netherlands midfielder has agreed a five-year contract to move to City from AC Milan for 55million euros (approximately £46million) and told Italian media he had spent Sunday conducting a medical with Pep Guardiola's side. City will play their first match of the Club World Cup against Morocco's Wydad AC on June 18 and the arrival of Reijnders could also impact the future of Jack Grealish at City. First win secured on the road to 2026. 🇳🇱🌎 #FINNED — Tijjani Reijnders (@T_Reijnders) June 8, 2025 Reijnders told Gazzetta: 'The medical? I couldn't wait to do it. The plan is to take part at the Club World Cup with City. I'm really excited about that. 'Doing that means I'll get to know my new team-mates soon.' Reijnders was a bright spark in a disappointing season for Milan, who only finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on qualification for Europe. Reijnders, who joined the Italian giants from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, scored 15 goals in 2024-25 and will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. As first reported by the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, England international Grealish looks set to miss out on City's final 35-man squad for the Club World Cup. The 29-year-old was not summoned from the bench in last month's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace and omitted from the squad for the last game of the season at Fulham altogether.

And Spain's Morata missed his spot-kick for Ruben Neves to slot home the winner. Both nations were vying to become the first to lift the Nations League twice. Ronaldo left in tears as Portugal beat Spain on pens to win Nations League

PORTUGAL 2-2 ( pens.) SPAIN: Cristiano Ronaldo and Mikel Oyarzabal stole the headlines in normal time but Ruben Neves proved to be the hero as Portugal secured the Nations League title Portugal lifted their second Nations League title as they beat Spain via a dramatic penalty shootout in Munich. Ruben Neves scored the winning penalty after a thrilling 2-2 draw went the distance. Portugal initially looked to be in for a long night after Spain dominated the opening portion of the game before Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi gave them a deserved lead. But Ronaldo's men were not denied for long as Nuno Mendes replied with a brilliant strike to level matters five minutes later. ‌ Mikel Oyarzabal, the match winner in the Euro 2024 final, restored Spain's lead just before the break with a lethal finish. Bruno Fernandes thought he had hauled his nation back into the game but saw his strike ruled out by an offside flag. ‌ Where the Manchester United man had failed, Cristiano Ronaldo succeeded as he stabbed home an equaliser with half an hour to go. The game eventually headed into a penalty shootout, with Alvaro Morata seeing his spot-kick saved by Diogo Costa, handing the title to Portugal. Take a look at what fans have been saying, particularly when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo: Ronaldo vs Yamal It was initially billed as the battle of the past and the future in Munich as Ronaldo faced off with Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. The young Spaniard looks likely to be the one to carry the baton of one of the world's best over the next years. And to be fair, Yamal's performances have been so sensational that even Ronaldo himself has billed the youngster to be one of the contenders for the Ballon d'Or. But the Portuguese veteran proved he still had plenty left within the opening few minutes of the clash as he chased back to steal the ball away from his Yamal. And fans were full of praise. One wrote: "Ronaldo (40) taking the ball off Yamal(17) .. this is CINEMA," with another adding: "Ronaldo dispossessing Yamal that's my goat." A futher supporter said: "40 years old Cristiano Ronaldo just dispossessed 17 years old lamine yamal. Ronaldo is winning the battle already." ‌ Offside debate Typically, Ronaldo had a big role to play in Portugal's equaliser. The Al-Nassr forward sprinted beyond the Spain defence and set the ball back to Bernardo Silva. ‌ He initially looked as though he had drifted offside but the flag stayed down long enough for Nuno Mendes to pick the ball up and lash it low into the far corner. VAR looked at the strike but saw no reason to cancel it - a decision that was debated by fans. One said: "That was a clear offside by Ronaldo. This tournament is rigged for Portugal," while another replied: "How Ronaldo manages to beat the offside trap is serious." Oyarzabal continues to shine While Ronaldo was previously the man for the big occasion, it appears someone else has claimed his glittering stage - Oyarzabal. The Real Sociedad wideman has developed a very handy nack of finding the net in major finals. ‌ England fans probably don't need reminding that he scored in their recent Euros heartbreak. And he's followed that up with another decisive goal in Germany. That form follows goals in the 2020 Copa del Rey final, the Olympics final of 2020 and the 2021 Nations League showpiece. And fans were quick to praise the forward. One said: "Oyarzabal has achieved what Cristiano has always dreamed of but has never been able to: score in a final with his country." ‌ Ronaldo reacts That fan was very quickly made to eat their words as Ronaldo levelled for Portugal with half an hour to go. Mendes raced down the left once more and lifted an excellent cross into the box. It drifted over the head of Chelsea star Marc Cucurella, with Ronaldo sticking out a boot to divert it into the net. And fans simply could not get enough. ‌ "Cristiano Ronaldo equalizes in the final," one wrote. "The most clutch player ever in the biggest stages!!" Pointing out his stunning goalscoring record, another said: "Ronaldo is inevitable ain't he. 138 goals for his country. 138." Penalties decisive as Ronaldo departs Ronaldo's evening was to end early after seemingly picking up an injury late on in normal time. As he departed, he handed the armband to Fernandes. ‌ Unfortunately for Portugal, they were not able to find a way through Spain with the game heading to penalties. And many will have hoped that Ronaldo would take one. But it mattered not as Morata missed and Ruben Neves secured the trophy for Ronaldo's men in Munich.
