Trump's nomination for peace prize: Fazl urges govt to withdraw its proposal

MURREE: Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan Fazal Group (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman has said that US President Trump's claim of being a standard-bearer of peace has proved false; therefore, Pakistani government should withdraw its proposal seeking his nomination for Nobel peace prize.
Addressing a party meeting here, he said the blood of Afghanis and the Palestinians is flowing on America's hands; how can it be a proponent of peace. Fazl said the situation in the region is currently worrisome, as an economic war going on in the world at the moment.
JUI-F chief said when the Chinese economy was booming in the Middle East, US was trying to stop it by demonstrating her military power. He said Trump won US presidential election with the slogan of peace but it had proven false. What kind of peace is supporting Israel in Palestine and Lebanon and in Syria, Maulana Fazlur Rehman questioned.
He said when Pakistan destroyed India's defense system Trump came forward and said that he had arranged ceasefire. He said US President had invited Army Chief for dinner, on which the rulers of Pakistan were so happy that they recommended giving the Nobel Prize to President Trump.

Oil prices steady as Russia supply concerns ease after Trump-Putin meet

SINGAPORE: Oil prices were largely unchanged on Monday after a drop in early trade, as the United States exerted no further pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war through measures to disrupt its oil exports following a meeting of the leaders of both nations. Brent crude futures dropped 6 cents, or 0.09%, to $65.79 a barrel by 0342 GMT while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $62.82 a barrel, up 2 cents, or 0.03%. US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders on Monday to strike a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. On Friday, Trump said he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil but might have to 'in two or three weeks', cooling concerns about a disruption in Russian supply. 'A non-outcome was largely priced in, the market remains in wait-and-see, more in a bearish context, if more Russian barrels can arrive into the global crude supply pool should hostilities end in Ukraine,' said independent energy analyst Gaurav Sharma. China, the world's biggest oil importer, is the largest buyer of Russian oil, followed by India. 'What was primarily in play were the secondary tariffs targeting the key importers of Russian energy, and President Trump has indeed indicated that he will pause pursuing incremental action on this front, at least for China,' RBC Capital analyst Helima Croft said in a note. 'The status quo remains largely intact for now,' Croft said, adding that Moscow would not walk back territorial demands while Ukraine and some European leaders would balk at the land-for-peace deal. Investors are also watching for clues from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's comments at this week's Jackson Hole meeting regarding the path of interest rate cuts that could boost stocks to further records. 'It's likely he will remain noncommittal and data-dependent, especially with one more payroll and Consumer Price Index (CPI) report before the September 17 FOMC meeting,' IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said in a note. Ukraine foreign minister says Russia continues to kill civilians despite peace efforts

KYIV: Ukraine's foreign minister said on Monday that Russia continued to kill civilians despite peace efforts ahead of the meeting between the Ukrainian and American presidents. Trump-Putin talks produced enough movement to justify Ukraine meeting: Rubio 'Russia is a murderous war machine that Ukraine is holding back. And it must be stopped through transatlantic unity and pressure,' Andrii Sybiha wrote on X about Russia's Monday attack on Kharkiv.

Chinese CPEC IPPs press Pakistan govt for Rs475bn dues

ISLAMABAD: As the date of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to China draws closer, Chinese CPEC Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have mounted pressure on the government for clearance of their outstanding receivables, which currently stand at around Rs 475 billion, well-informed sources told Business Recorder. Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Chinese CPEC IPPs have been writing letters to government functionaries, with copies also shared with the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan. The Ambassador, sources said, is actively engaging with senior Pakistani officials to finalize the Prime Minister's agenda for bilateral meetings with Chinese leadership. In a recent letter, Wang Dongfang, CEO of Port Qasim Electric Power Company (PQEPC), expressed deep concern over the growing delays in tariff payments by the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guaranteed (CPPA-G). Debt re-profiling with Chinese IPPs: PD, FD likely to share implementation proposal According to Wang, under the Government of Pakistan's guidance, the 1,320 MW Port Qasim Coal-Fired Power Project—one of the flagship energy ventures under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)—has consistently provided clean, reliable, and economical electricity to the national grid. 'While we highly appreciate the efforts of the Government of Pakistan and CPPA-G in arranging funds and making tariff payments to IPPs, the total outstanding amount due to PQEPC has reached Rs 81 billion ($286.94 million) as of July 31, 2025, with a delay period of over six months, which could further escalate,' the letter stated. The CEO cautioned that shareholders and sponsors of the project, including those from China and Qatar, have conveyed 'significant discontent' over the payment backlog and have requested urgent measures to reduce the outstanding amount. 'We would like to notify that the current dues entitle PQEPC to suspend plant operations under Section 9.10 of the PPA, without any liability for Liquidated Damages (LDs),' the CEO warned. PQEPC also highlighted that its Energy Purchase Price (EPP) tariff is comparatively more competitive than oil- and RLNG-based power plants. Suspension of operations, the CEO warned, would result in a 'lose-lose' outcome, which both sides must avoid through timely settlement of dues to ensure sustainable generation and prevent triggering defaults under Loan Agreements and the Government of Pakistan's Sovereign Guarantee. Concluding his letter, Wang urged the Finance Minister, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and Planning Minster, Ahsan Iqbal to take immediate notice of the 'critical situation' and coordinate with relevant authorities to arrange financial support for CPPA-G so that the outstanding dues could be cleared without further delay. When an official was contacted for comments on the correspondence of Chinese CPEC IPPs on payment of outstanding amounts, he responded that since the government does not have enough fiscal space, the payments will be made on the basis of availability of resources. However, energy payments are being made to them through Escrow Account. The government has earmarked Rs 5 billion per month to be paid to the Chinese CPEC IPPs. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
