Darkest soap storylines
Over the years the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock...
EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) - Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca's adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police.
Emmerdale: Holly's drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) - In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale's first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose.
Hollyoaks: Luke's rape (2000) - Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap's first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs - who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance.
Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) - Just a mere mention of 'Richard Hillman' is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it's not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn't.

Jacqueline Jossa and Dan Osborne celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary together amid marital woes
Jacqueline Jossa and Dan Osborne celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary on Monday, just months after reports emerged they had split. Back in March, it was reported that the EastEnders actress, 32, had separated from the former TOWIE star, 33. Despite reports of their marriage being 'over', the couple enjoyed a romantic break at a luxury London hotel to mark the milestone. Jacqueline took to her Instagram Story to show off their modern suite at the five-star Pan Pacific Hotel, complete with views of St Paul's Cathedral. She also shared a snap of her husband Dan gazing out the window at the London skyline. The EastEnders actress, 32, and the former TOWIE star, 33, enjoyed a romantic getaway at a luxury London hotel to mark the milestone - despite previous reports that their marriage was 'over' She captioned the post: 'Happy 8th wedding anniversary,' alongside an eyes welling up emoji and a love heart hand emoji. The actress also posted a photo of a large bouquet of pink flowers next to a personalised bottle of bubbly that read, 'Cheers to you beautiful.' In March, it was reported that Dan and Jacqueline's marriage was 'over' and that the couple were living separately after he 'betrayed' her and 'reignited old trust issues'. At the time, pals reportedly told The Sun that Dan 'no longer loves her' and wants to move on with his life. The source said: 'Dan has fallen out of love with Jacqueline and there's no way back for him. 'Jacqueline is absolutely devastated and will do anything to make it work. 'Dan has told friends it's over for him and while he won't be rushing into a divorce, it's not a question of if they will, but when.' MailOnline contacted Jacqueline and Dan's representatives for comment at the time. Jacqueline reportedly wanted to get things back on track with Dan and 'there had been no conversation about divorce' after their shocking split. The couple reportedly went their separate ways after the former TOWIE star purchased a property without his wife's knowledge. Sources close to soap star Jacqueline, who shares daughters Ella, ten, and Mia, six, with Dan, said she felt 'betrayed' and it had 'reignited old trust issues'. But a friend of the EastEnders star claimed that while the pair were no longer together, they didn't plan to start divorce proceedings. A source said: 'Jacqueline and Dan have effectively ended the marriage but she wants to try to get back on track, things have been very difficult between them but she still has love for Dan. 'He's still not living at the family home but he and Jacqueline are talking things through. There has been no conversation about divorce.' Jacqueline was left in shock after discovering her husband had bought a house in Essex last year, which put more pressure on their strained relationship. The couple reportedly struggled to make their marriage work following weeks of heated rows. Jacqueline, who was pictured for the first time in May without her wedding ring, was the sole owner of the couple's 'dream' £2million six-bedroom home, which was put on the market last June and sold in March for a six-figure sum. A source told MailOnline that Dan, who's also a father to son Teddy, 11, with ex-partner Megan Tomlin, wanted to 'protect' himself and invest in somewhere to live for his own security as his relationship with Jacqueline gradually declined. An insider revealed: 'Dan bought a house last year without telling Jacqueline until the final stages. 'He put the wheels in motion because he believed their relationship was coming to an end and with Jacqueline owning their marital home, he needed to look after his future. 'It caused a blazing row between them and the trust, which was already fragmented, really suffered.' It was confirmed in March that the couple had separated following almost eight years of marriage and over 10 years together. The Sun on Sunday revealed at the time that Dan had packed his bags and moved out with the couple uncertain about their future. An official statement said: 'Jacqueline and Dan are handling things privately, choosing to keep their lives and relationship out of the public eye. They kindly ask for respect and privacy as they navigate this together. 'Their children remain their top priority, surrounded by love and care from both parents, something that will never change. 'Above all, Jacqueline and Dan have each other's and their children's best interests at heart. There will be no further comment.' Jacqueline married ex-TOWIE star Dan in June 2017 and in July last year, she paid tribute to her husband online. She wrote: 'Just realised I haven't even posted on the grid about Daniel's birthday or our anniversary and I just wanted to do a little appreciation post for my bestest friend in the world. Over 10 years and seven of them married. Love you more than ever. Crazy little world isn't it.' The couple have faced their difficulties over the years, with their marriage plagued by cheating allegations against Dan.
