Tirupati in grip of fear as elephant herd and leopard roam near Tirumala foothills
The presence of wild animals near both trekking routes — Srivarimettu and Alipiri — has heightened concerns of a possible man-animal conflict in the area. Srivarimettu caters to pilgrims arriving from the western side, while Alipiri is used by those coming from the eastern and southern regions.
The elephant herd was first noticed around 8:30 p.m. on Monday near a pumphouse in the vicinity of Srinivasa Mangapuram. Interestingly, their movement was a chance discovery — captured by drones originally deployed by forest officials to monitor red sanders smugglers in the Seshachalam forest.
Forest authorities quickly alerted senior officials, who launched an operation to drive the tuskers back into the deep forest. However, the herd trampled several mango and banana orchards before retreating into the woods by 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Officials from the Nagapatla forest range have urged devotees to trek in groups and remain alert. Residents of Srinivasa Mangapuram, Narasingapuram, Ramireddypalle, A. Rangampeta, as well as students and staff at Mohan Babu University (MBU), and commuters on the Tirupati–Anantapur national highway have been advised to stay vigilant for possible elephant movement in their areas.
Deputy Chief Minister and Forest Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has taken note of the situation and directed forest officials to strengthen patrolling in the forest fringe villages. During a teleconference, he instructed the formation of WhatsApp groups in each affected village to facilitate real-time updates on elephant movement. Expressing condolences over the death of a farmer in a recent elephant attack in neighbouring Chittoor district, Mr. Kalyan cautioned officials against complacency and emphasised the need for proactive coordination between departments and communities.

MOFilw: Russia announced curbs on calls on the WhatsApp and Telegram messenger apps on Wednesday, saying that this was necessary to fight criminality, state media reported. "In order to combat criminals, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messaging apps (WhatsApp and Telegram)," communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said, as quoted by the RIA and TASS news agencies. The messenger apps have become "the main voice services used for fraud and extortion, and for involving Russian citizens in subversive and terrorist activities," the watchdog added. Russian security services have frequently claimed that Ukraine was using Telegram to recruit people or commit acts of sabotage in Russia. Moscow wants the messengers to provide access to data upon request from law enforcement, not only for fraud probes but also for investigating activities that Russia describes as terrorist ones. "Access to calls in foreign messengers will be restored after they start complying with Russian legislation," Russia's digital ministry said. In a statement sent to AFP, Telegram said it "actively combats misuse of its platform, including calls for sabotage or violence, as well as fraud" and removes "millions of pieces of harmful content every day". Since launching its offensive in Ukraine, Russia has drastically restricted press freedom and freedom of speech online.

Wayanad landslides: HC quashes case against two persons for comments against CMDRF donations
Kochi: Tackling people expressing dissent or criticism through criminal cases is an affront to the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution, high court has held. Justice V G Arun delivered the ruling while quashing a criminal case and further proceedings against V S Gowri Sankari of Thiruvananthapuram and U Prasant Bellulaya of Kasaragod, accused of posting negative comments in a WhatsApp group about the solicitation of contributions to the chief minister's distress relief fund (CMDRF) for the rehabilitation of Wayanad landslide victims. The Bakal police had booked the petitioners under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot) and 45 (assisting or encouraging another person to commit a crime) of BNS, Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and Section 120(o) (causing nuisance to any person by repeated or undesirable communication) of the Kerala Police Act. HC observed that the mere fact that comments are unpalatable to some people, or even to the govt, is no reason to initiate criminal prosecution. The remarks, though critical of the govt, were within the bounds of law. Finding the comments to be fair criticism, HC held that continuing the prosecution would amount to an abuse of process of law and a violation of the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution. The bench further noted that the comments referred to alleged misutilisation of donated funds and criticised the political party in power. Assuming that such remarks could incite a riot or cause nuisance was "preposterous", HC said. It also observed that the govt's request for contributions could not be treated as a 'direction,' and therefore, cautioning WhatsApp group members before making donations would not amount to refusal of a direction under Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act. Courier steals 3cr gold in 3 days of work
Mumbai: Just three days after his appointment, a delivery boy was arrested for stealing 17 bags of gold ornaments worth Rs 2.9 crore which he had collected from various jewellery shops in South Mumbai to deliver to their clients. Vile Parle police apprehended the accused, Mehul Garg (24), from his home in Udaipur on Tuesday while he was in possession of the valuables. Garg was appointed as a delivery boy by Jai Ambe Courier Services on Aug 2. "He perpetrated the theft out of greed and to quickly earn money after obtaining knowledge about the parcel details posted by his employer on a WhatsApp group, of which he was also a member, requiring him to collect and deliver consignments," said police. Case was filed against Garg on Aug 7, a day after his employer, Sahil Kothari (29), searched for him and gathered information about the consignments he had collected from various jewellers at Zaveri Bazar on Aug 5 before fleeing Mumbai later that evening.
