Lionel Messi, Inter Miami facing Champions Cup exit danger after controversial LAFC defeat
The stars came out to see Lionel Messi on his latest visit to Los Angeles, but it was a less-than-sparkling night for the Inter Miami superstar as his team slumped to a 1-0 defeat against LAFC in the first leg of its Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal.
Messi's appearance tempted several members of the NBA's Golden State Warriors to BMO Stadium, along with veteran recording artist Lionel Richie and rapper Becky G, but a 57th minute strike from Nathan Ordaz was enough to tilt the clash in favor of the home side, who will carry their slender advantage into next Wednesday's second leg.

Ordaz collected the ball in space, advanced quickly and smashed it home from outside the area to give LAFC a lead it would never surrender. Earlier, Miami had strongly argued for Ordaz's dismissal after he tangled with defender Maximiliano Falcón and appeared to make heavy contact with a swinging arm.
Instead, referee Oshane Anthony Nation opted to issue just a yellow card to the 21-year-old after viewing video replay, much to LAFC's relief. After a scoreless first half, Ordaz made the most of his good fortune.

LAFC improved as the game went on, but still had to withstand a series of half chances that Messi often turns into goals.
The Argentina forward sent one free kick from just outside the box over Hugo Lloris' crossbar and delivered another straight into the arms of LAFC's French goalkeeper, who famously came off second best against Messi in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.
Late on, a swift-footed run into the penalty area and a low shot were not enough to bother Lloris, before a final free kick was curled too high in the waning minutes, leaving Miami with plenty to ponder on their journey home and ahead of Sunday's MLS regular-season clash with Toronto FC.
There have been some concerns over Messi's fitness, and his usage by coach Javier Mascherano has been intermittent in recent weeks. He missed Argentina's thumping victory over Brazil last week with a hip complaint. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was present in L.A. to watch Wednesday's proceedings.
This was Miami's first defeat of the 2025 season, having won four of its first five MLS games while accumulating 13 points. Messi and company are hoping to avoid a repeat of last season's quarterfinal exit, where Liga MX's Monterrey were too strong over two legs and Messi was hindered by injury.

The visitors received another blow, with Sergio Busquets destined to miss the second leg after receiving a yellow card, taking him over the accumulation threshold for a one-game ban.
For LAFC, Denis Bouanga was strong and threatening, while a defense marshaled by Aaron Long held firm in the face of consistent pressure.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch condemns U.S. treatment, ‘lack of respect' for Ukraine
Canada men's national team coach Jesse Marsch offered his support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian national team on Friday while also taking aim once again at United States President Donald Trump. 'As an American, the treatment that we have given the President of the Ukraine and the lack of respect really bothers me. Without having to know what it's like to go through something like what these players, this coach and this federation has been through, I am just really excited to be able to show our support,' Marsch said in his opening remarks at a Friday morning event with the Canada Ukraine Foundation. Advertisement Marsch is likely referencing a tense and fiery exchange between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Feb. 28 that made global headlines. Marsch has previously taken aim at Trump, saying in February that Trump should 'lay off the ridiculous rhetoric about Canada being the 51st state; as an American, I'm ashamed of the arrogance and disregard we've shown one of our historically oldest, strongest and most loyal allies.' Due to the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian national team is required to play its matches in neutral venues. 'If you think about the challenges that the players from Ukraine have been through, they haven't played a home match in several years, they've had to play World Cup qualifiers on foreign soil, they've had players playing professionally and internationally with the concern of the safety of their country and their family and their friends,' Marsch said. 'In general, the ability for us to have empathy and sympathy for everything that their team, their nation, their team, their players have gone through is really important at a time like this.' Ukraine's upcoming home matches in UEFA Group D of 2026 World Cup qualification do not yet have a location. 'As the Canadian national team coach, to show how much we are behind them, we are with them, that we want to do everything we can,' Marsch said, noting that one of the beauties of international football is that it 'can take on so much more than what the sport is.' Ukraine is in Toronto to play Canada in the Canadian Shield friendly tournament on Saturday. Ukraine will play its second match of the Canadian Shield friendly tournament on Tuesday against New Zealand, while Canada plays Ivory Coast also on Tuesday. 'It's really a pleasure and an honour to show that friendship and respect are at the core of everything we try to do in this sport,' Marsch said.

It also notes that Manchester United and Chelsea now see PSG as their biggest competition in the race for the striker. Manchester United, PSG target not headed to Saudi ArabiaOn Thursday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Osimhen's potential move to Al Hilal is on the verge of collapsing, as there is still no agreement between the club and the player. Meanwhile, Galatasaray have entered the race with serious intent and are making a strong push to complete the deal. Meanwhile, TBR Football recently claimed that Liverpool have identified Osimhen as one of two key targets to strengthen their No. 9 position this summer. The outlet's chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, added that Liverpool have already taken steps behind the scenes toward a potential move. Osimhen is reportedly keen on a switch to the Premier League. This stance gives English clubs a potential advantage in the race for his signature. Still, Napoli reportedly remain firm on their valuation and have no plans to lower their asking price.
