Rugby-WWE or Hollywood? Maher considering next move after Rugby World Cup
MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -U.S. rugby player Ilona Maher said she is contemplating an offer to participate in WWE wrestling as a stepping stone to Hollywood after the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off on Friday in England. "I've been approached before by the WWE," she told the BBC, joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous'. "I should think about it, there is great money in it." Maher is the world's most followed rugby player with nearly nine million followers across Instagram and TikTok. She was also a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars", posed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and was named best breakthrough athlete at this year's Espys, ESPN's annual award show. "I would love to get into the acting space and the scripted space. I think a Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson, John Cena progression - I would love to do that," Maher said. "It would be exciting to see my body type on the screen. I'll start off small - probably like a hot assassin or something, let's not get too crazy. I'm not going to be in a rom-com just yet. "We'll see. The world is open, but I do see myself coming back to rugby." The United States play favourites England to open the World Cup on Friday at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. Sabah's very own hip-hop star Jaclyn Chia joins up with fellow East Malaysian singer Yunk G for new single 'Redam'
THE local music scene is rocking this year with many Malaysian legends returning to the limelight and the younger set coming out with unique styles and songs that are winning the hearts of the fans. And here comes another excellent single that is set to rock the local scene with the release of the latest duet single entitled "Redam", the result of a special collaboration between the rising Sabah singer and rapper, Jaclyn Chia, featuring Yunk G. The single "Redam" is an introspective ballad with acoustic and rap elements that takes listeners into the depths of emotion - about wounds, pain, and efforts to suppress unspoken feelings. "Redam" is also a sonic narrative about the inner turmoil of a person who is faced with loss and emotional trauma, but chooses to remain standing even though his heart has long been broken. And the song is also winning many fans and is well-followed on digital platforms, including on YouTube. "This song is very personal for me and also has some of my own experiences in life. It's like writing a letter to myself after going through hurt in life, but still trying to live on," said Jaclyn Chia about the inspiration behind this song. For the record, Jaclyn Chia has also sung a song with the contemporary Joget Moden tempo entitled "Joget Mengikut Rasa", composed by Shaifulhan and lyrics by Shahab, which was produced under Luncai Emas. The singer was also crowned the champion during the RTM Kemuncak Bintang Ai FM 2024 competition. The single "Redam" was also produced with the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Communications through the Creative Fund (Mycreative Ventures), a sign of support for the original work of local musicians. Composed by Shaiffulhan Saidin and lyrics written by D'Laila under the Zirbad Music Production banner, while Luncai Emas acts as a digital distributor. According to the composer, Shaifulhan said, "Jaclyn Chia's beautiful voice combined with Yunk G's solid rap forms a song that touches the soul and soothes wounds." Meanwhile, rapper Yunk G said he has high hopes of seeing the collaboration succeed in the coming weeks and said, "I believe music should speak the truth. In 'Redam', I want to bring the perspective of those who often hide their wounds for fear of being seen as weak." Yunk G, or real name AG Sri Iskandar Bahrin, is a rapper who has been doing well in recent years with singles in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia. Among his top hits is the single 'Aku Shot', the original soundtrack for the movie "Adiwara". The music video ''Redam'', which had been released on Luncai Emas's YouTube channel, displays poetic visuals full of symbolism - depicting an individual's journey through the shadows of the past. The single can also be streamed on all digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.

Adriana Nordin Manan returns with a punchy bilingual double bill
Adriana, preparing props for her new works, says 'Borong' and 'Encyclopedia' have allowed her to write punchier, more fluid scripts, as both are short plays with only two characters. Photo: The Star/Low Boon Tat Two characters walk into a room. What happens next is anyone's guess – and that's the premise behind theatre production Wacky Double Bill, featuring Borong and Encyclopedia. The show is playing at Dekat KL creative space, Wisma Rampai in Kuala Lumpur until Aug 24. Behind this new - hands-on, small team - theatre work are producer-playwright Adriana Nordin Manan, whose drama Fault Lines won Best Original Script at the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2024, and producer Sidhart Joe Dev. It is co-produced by Protagonist Studio and JDEV Studios, with story development by Cocoon Creative Lab, This double bill marks Adriana's return with a fresh experiment in form and storytelling. By keeping each script short and focused on just two characters, she gives language and dialogue centre stage. Adriana hopes audiences - in this indie space - will see how much drama can unfold between just two actors in a small room. 'The relationships in each play are quite different, so audiences will get varied perspectives, adding to the entertainment,' she said in a recent interview at the theatre venue. 'In terms of contrasts, apart from language, I hope audiences reflect on how misunderstandings and commiserations happen in our daily lives. Power dynamics, generational differences, and cross-cultural collisions will make the plays hit home for many. I hope they leave with a small reflection on the human condition – how we all stumble through cringe moments, yet keep moving on,' she added. In 'Borong', Hazzy Alzeeq (front) and Aloeng Silalahiplay two colleagues desperate to impress their boss to secure a better future. Photo: JDEV Studios This bilingual double bill offers two compact plays back-to-back, each with its own characters, mood, and rhythm. Designed to be fast-paced yet layered, both plays run about 30 minutes. Borong, performed in Bahasa Malaysia, features Aloeng Silalahi and Hazzy Alzeeq under the direction of Qiu Qatina. It follows two colleagues caught in the push and pull of ambition as they scramble to impress their boss. Meanwhile, Encyclopedia, staged in English, stars Aniq Durar and Megat Adli, directed by Jazzie Lee Jin Jye. It playfully explores cross-cultural encounters, poking fun at awkward conversations and the tension between politeness and honesty. Both pieces resonate with everyday realities while sparking deeper reflection. Humour, Adriana explained, is a deliberate entry point. 'I think humour can be very effective in opening the door and inviting people of different backgrounds to realise how much more similar we are than different. And how we're all shaped by colonialism, capitalism, hustle culture – the forces that govern our lives more than we'd like to admit,' said Adriana. 'It might not bring world peace, but the arts give us space to be ourselves and see our struggles with gentleness. That, in its own way, helps build social cohesion,' she added. Reflecting on her creative journey, Adriana described the project as both reassuring and liberating. 'I'm comforted knowing I can be a playwright of different kinds of plays. There's no one way to write for theatre, and I can embrace this diversity while growing my craft,' she said. 'I also want to take myself a bit less seriously and experiment more. Documentary theatre is one form I'm especially keen to dive into, while working with collaborators who share the same broad vision. Theatre has given me plenty of transferable skills, which I'll apply in future pivots and reroutes – of which I foresee many!' More info here.
