Data center owners urge US Treasury to keep renewable energy subsidy rules
Aug 15 (Reuters) - The Data Center Coalition, which represents data center owners including Google, Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab, called on U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to uphold existing rules for wind and solar energy subsidies, saying they have enabled the industry to grow quickly and stay ahead of competition from China. Tougher rules on how projects can qualify for federal clean energy tax credits could slow development of new electricity generation at a time of surging power demand driven by artificial intelligence and the digital economy. "Any regulatory friction that slows down deployment of new generation today directly impacts our ability to meet AI-era electricity demands tomorrow," the coalition wrote in its letter to Bessent. The letter is dated August 4 but was seen by Reuters on Friday. President Donald Trump issued an executive order in July directing Treasury to tighten clean energy tax credit rules, including redefining what it means for a project to have started construction. The industry has relied on the existing rules for the last decade, and advisory firm Clean Energy Associates projected this week that the United States could lose about 60 gigawatts of planned solar capacity through 2030 if stricter "beginning of construction" rules are implemented. Between 2017 and 2023, the U.S. data center industry contributed $3.5 trillion to the nation's gross domestic product and directly employed over 600,000 workers, according to the DCC. The Treasury Department is expected to issue updated guidelines as soon as August 18.

A FAN is a non-negotiable in summer, especially during Britain's increasingly frequent heatwaves. But this summer, one fan in particular has been catching everyone's eye. I've reviewed the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan, which has a unique cooling mist function and is designed to be highly portable. It's also perpetually out of stock, so I wondered if it's worth the struggle to get your hands on. 5 Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan, £129.99 Launched at the start of the summer, this well-timed gadget has the potential to be a seasonal must-have. It's different to any fan I've owned before, most notably in its super-compact size and design. The "hydro" in the name is a nod to the fan's misting function, something that's unique to this range and that I haven't seen from any of the other top fan brands (including Dyson, Meaco or Duux). Just like you get on holiday, it promises a super-fine spray that cools you down without soaking your furniture. You can use it inside or outside, although I did initially wonder if this was a gimmick; is anyone really going to use a fan outside in the UK? My main considerations were how powerful it was, if the unique features were realistic for everyday use, and whether it offers good value for money. I used it both inside (in my lounge and bedroom) and outside in the garden, switching between the misting and normal fan and testing out refilling the water tank. Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan: The Nitty Gritty First impressions 5 To get going with that all-important misting option, you'll need to lift up the flap at the top and fill it with water. Then, you open the latch at the centre of the fan. Switching between settings is easy; there are only three buttons. One is for speed (of which there are five), another is for natural breeze (two to choose from), and the third is for the mist (you can set it to spray in intervals or continuously). My hope when unveiling the fan was that it would be as compact as promised, and it did not disappoint. If, like me, you want a fan you can carry around the house with you, you'll be thrilled. The handle is the first thing you notice, and you can grab it with one hand as it's super-lightweight. There's nothing to actually set up, so you can start using it immediately; the only thing you need to do is charge the fan if you want to use it cordlessly. Does it deliver? 5 Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan, £129.99 I can't speak highly enough of the misting function - it is highly effective, at both cooling you down and avoiding too much dampness on furniture. Both the interval and consistent mist emit water with the same force but the interval option is great for making the most of the air and the mist. When the mist is on, it is louder than using just the fan setting, but it's still pretty quiet and unobtrusive. My main worry was whether the mist would soak me or my furniture, but as long as you position the fan at least one metre from you, the mist will evaporate after it hits your skin. I tested the mist while I was on the sofa, and it didn't leave any dampness on the fabric either. If this summer's anything to go by, it could be a great investment for the future, especially when temperatures hit the 30s. I won't lie, I wasn't blown away by the design, though. It's a cut above cheap, plasticky fans (as it should be for the price point) and feels sturdy enough, but it's not going to win any style awards. That being said, I rated the portability. Originally unsure whether the cordless aspect would be genuinely useful, I'm now convinced that it's genius. As someone who loves camping, it struck me that this would be ideal for reducing the temperature in the tent during the summer, and it could really improve a festival experience, too. The cordless battery life is decent, if not mindblowing. If you're using it on its gentlest speed, it can last for up to 12 hours, but this is heavily reduced on full power. It's easily compact enough to chuck in the car, and because of how lightweight it is, I had no trouble moving it from room to room when switching between working from home at my desk, to the sofa and finally to bed. Small but mighty, in spite of its size, the Shark fan packs a punch, with a powerful airflow. The fan can't oscillate, though, and because of the compact size, the airflow is restricted to a small area. This essentially means you can only direct it at one person. My partner and I usually sleep with a fan oscillating around the room, so we'd have to stick with our old fan for this, but it is great for working from home or if you live alone. How much is the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan? At the time of testing, the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan retails for £129.99. It's not the most affordable fan money can buy, but it's specific in its features and its uniqueness puts it is in its own category. The versatility also helps with value for money, as it can be used in just about any scenario. Where to buy the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan As well as on Shark's website, the fan is stocked by several other popular retailers. The Tristar Pedestal Misting Fan, available at B&Q, is a standing alternative to the Shark fan. It also has a misting function, and being a much larger model, it also has a considerably larger water tank. It does, however, serve a largely different purpose, being a standing fan that would be tricky to transport. Or, if you did want a Shark fan, you could blow the budget on the standing version, the Shark FlexBreeze Pro Mist Indoor & Outdoor Fan & Outdoor Misting System, for £249.99 (though it's currently on sale for £219.99). Most premium devices now have a wet mopping function, with spinning mop heads that can be washed at the base. LiDar is a common feature, anti-tangle technology usually shows up in some form and, of course, they empty and fill their own waste containers. It leaves you with a tricky decision to make if you do want to invest in the best robot vacuums in the market, and the huge discounts offered by some brands make it all the more testing. I've spent several weeks testing the Ezviz RS20 Max, and it's priced currently at £499 (if you can catch a deal on Amazon) and that makes it a contender in the battle for the high-spec household robots. It's a big unit. Not only is the robot itself a fair size, but the base station is a monster - it has two water tanks; one for dirty and one for clean, and then a large waste bin. The main reason for its size, though, is its clever mop-washing and drying system. Sure, the likes of Eufy fit a mop-washing station into a smaller base, but the Ezviz RS20 Max has a trick up its sleeve. Unlike pretty much any other robot vacuum on the market, the RS20 Max can shed its two mop heads, and leave them in the base. It has the ability to self-detach its two mop heads whenever it detects carpet | Ezviz This means there's no soggy fabric being dragged behind it. That's never a problem on hard surfaces because they're always lifted away, but it's always been an issue for people with a mix of carpet and hard floors. You'll know what I mean if you've ever seen soggy patches on the edge of a rug. It's such a simple idea, but brilliantly executed by Ezviz, and it's one of two key innovations in the RS20 Max. Another clever feature that's rarely seen is access to the on-board camera. Through the accompanying app, you can send the robot out on its travels and watch where it's going in real time. The use case for this is impressive. It effectively turns your robot into a home security system. Paranoid about an intruder? Just send your little sentry out on duty. Need to keep an eye on a pet or family member? Just monitor them on the app. This would be little more than a mere gimmick if the vacuuming and mopping functions were lacklustre, but thankfully, they're not. It's a sizeable device, but quite low-profile In fact, with 13,000Pa of suction, the RS20 Max is one of the more powerful robot vacuums out there. And its CutFree brush system had no issues with my labradoodle's fur offerings. The mopping function is perhaps less impressive, but I've yet to find a robot mopping system that properly wows me. And the fact that the robot will dash off and drop off its tools at the base station automatically if it detects a carpet is such a clever bit of tech. It's also one of the most impressive mop washing systems I've tested too. Perhaps because they can be detached, they're washed and dried incredibly effectively, and surprisingly quickly. The obstacle avoidance system is very clever, and its LiDar system maps your house very well, but its low profile can cause issues on thick rugs. Mine has got stuck a few times. Battery life is decent, and it's not too noisy, even while it's on the base station having a quick charge up and refresh. It can sometimes get stuck on rugs, but usually it sorts itself out | Ezviz So in just about every measurable way, the Ezviz RS20 Max is as impressive as a £500 robot vacuum needs to be. It does a great job of mopping, it has powerful suction, the app is great, it's easy to set up, and it's easy to live with. The detachable wash pads will only be of use to someone who has a share of carpet and hard floors, or perhaps hard floors and some rugs, and it'll be up to you to decide how useful the camera surveillance system is. If you do happen to be lucky enough to be looking around for a top-spec robot vacuum, you'll know how tricky the decision is. And, I'm sorry to say, Ezviz has just made it a little bit harder.
