Brown is slightly limping each time he lands after soaring for a layup and runs gingerly down the floor, trying to protect the knee from any unintentional missteps that could further aggravate the injury. But he's been able to put together some impressive performances in the past few weeks.

After taking three games off, Brown tallied 24 points in a win at the Suns, including a thunderous dunk and roar. He scored 24 with a hot second half in a home loss to the Heat and then scored 31 two nights later in a rematch with the Suns.

He played just 21 minutes against the Washington Wizards and scored 15 in a blowout win. It appeared Brown was progressing, learning how to play with considerable pain, but his play
Brown scored 6 points in nearly 22 minutes with three turnovers. He had no burst. He seemingly curated every step to ensure he avoided injury. He was held out of the game in the fourth quarter and overtime. Mazzulla said Brown's shown the ability to play with the injury.
It's uncertain why he got the night off against the Magic, besides Mazzulla not wanting to play Brown in back-to-backs, but the fact he was ruled out Friday more than 24 hours before tipoff is an indication he needs rest and rehab. He has said the 65-game mark is not important but there was a definite opportunity for Brown to make an All-NBA team.
And that's partly because there are several players who won't reach the 65-game minimum. Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, Franz Wagner, De'Aaron Fox and Norman Powell are all ineligible for awards, giving Brown more of a chance for his second All-NBA selection.
The question was whether playing more games over complete rest would delay the recovery process. The Celtics will have perhaps six days off after Sunday afternoon's season finale against the Hornets, giving the team time to practice, rest and prepare for their first-round series.
The Celtics and perhaps Brown decided it was not worth further injury to meet the 65-game limit and give him reps against a bunch of reserves and G-Leaguers. Despite the injury, he has flourished at times with his Paul Pierce-like low post game, using his size and strength to dominate in the low post.

Despite the injuries, including a bone bruise in his thigh, Brown has been better statistically after the All-Star Break. He is shooting better from the field (47.2 to 46.1 percent), from the 3-point line (32.4 to 32.5 percent) and most important from the free throw line (74.6 to 82.1 percent) and his plus-minus soared from +7.4 to +14.4.
One of the reasons the Celtics are 20-5 since the All-Star Break has been the ascension of Brown, which makes him critical to the team's success in the playoffs.
Playing in the final two games could have been considered selfish, but the NBA decided to tie games played to league awards to discourage load management and players just taking games off because they don't feel like playing and still getting the benefits of the those who play through pain, play in front of road fans and play even when it's not convenient.
Can't blame Brown for wanting to play instead of being part of a generation of players who want constant rest and have no issue with missing games, even in their heart, they know they're healthy enough to play.
While it may have been prudent to rest Brown prior to Friday, it's unfair to call him selfish for wanting to put in a hard day's work. Luckily for the Celtics, they don't have superstars who are cool with missing 17 games per season. Load management has never really been an issue in Boston, so perhaps Brown deserves a pass for wanting to be out there for his team and, of course, Mazzulla ensured he didn't log heavy minutes and saved him from exertion when it appears he's laboring.

Resting is the best thing for Brown now and the hope is he'll be closer to himself by next Sunday.

Red Sox Projected to Trade $38.5 Million All-Star Pitcher After Kristian Campbell News

Red Sox Projected to Trade $38.5 Million All-Star Pitcher After Kristian Campbell News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Any games featuring Boston Red Sox teammates Kristian Campbell and Lucas Giolito, at least in the short term, will feature Campbell at second base and Giolito on the mound. Advertisement Whether or not that partnership will continue past the trade deadline, though, remains to be seen. Although Campbell's future in Boston is safe given his top prospect status, Giolito is a pending free agent on a team potentially destined for a fourth losing season in six years. Could, and would, the 29-33 Red Sox wave the white flag and fully pivot to a Campbell-led future? If so, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer won't be surprised to see Boston trade Giolito ahead of the July 31 deadline. Giolito, who turns 31 next month, owns a 4.78 ERA and 26-10 K-BB ratio over 32 innings. He's a long way removed from the young pitcher who earned All-Star honors with the Chicago White Sox in 2019, and it's been four years since his last above-average season. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas GiolitoDale Zanine-Imagn Images "He's at least an innings-eater," Rymer argued, "and it probably wouldn't be hard to get Boston to eat some of his $19 million salary." Advertisement Indeed, Giolito is in the final year of a two-year, $38.5 million contract. The Red Sox (or whoever holds his rights come the offseason) also have a $14 million club option if he throws fewer than 140 innings. However, that becomes a $19 million mutual option if he hits that innings mark. Giolito signed that contract before missing all of last year with right elbow surgery. The inconsistent Red Sox are already making significant moves, announcing Monday that Campbell won't receive reps at first base after all. Instead, manager Alex Cora made it clear they're keeping Campbell at second. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow notably backed Cora over the weekend amid repeated calls for a managerial change. Advertisement Time is running out for Campbell, Giolito, and the Red Sox to right the ship. Boston enters Tuesday trailing by nine games in the AL East, and the Red Sox are 4.5 games out of the AL's third and final Wild Card spot. Red Sox Share Rafael Devers Injury News After Rays Game

Red Sox Share Rafael Devers Injury News After Rays Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If not for New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge and his team's mediocre season, it feels safe to say that Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers would be a dark horse AL MVP candidate. Advertisement Alas, Judge exists, and Devers has a new problem beyond Boston's 32-36 record. Red Sox manager Alex Cora implied that Devers is battling an undisclosed injury, one that contributed to him slowing down while running out a ground ball against the New York Yankees on Sunday. Cora did not disclose what is bothering Devers, who has played all 68 games for the fourth-place Red Sox. 'He plays every day; obviously, he's a DH, and there's certain things—nothing major—but stuff that we have to pay attention to,' Cora said after Monday's 11-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Devers went 0-for-3 with three walks on Monday night. Cora said the Red Sox training staff said any issue that Devers has is 'nothing major.' Advertisement 'It's something that we can actually handle, and he'll be playing,' Cora reiterated. Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael DeversKen Blaze-Imagn Images The Red Sox had not announced Tuesday's lineup as of publication. After beginning the season in a historic 0-for-21 slump, Devers has been among baseball's hottest hitters in recent weeks. The three-time All-Star is batting .328 with nine home runs, 38 RBI, and a stellar 1.047 OPS since May 1. Devers owns a 30-30 K-BB ratio in his last 166 plate appearances, though the Red Sox are only 15-21 in that span. NBA Trade Idea Gives Warriors' Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler New All-Star Teammate

NBA Trade Idea Gives Warriors' Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler New All-Star Teammate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors made a blockbuster trade in February, acquiring six-time NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. Advertisement The Butler trade saved the Warriors' season. Golden State acquired Butler on Feb. 6. The team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers that night, dropping their record to 25-26. The Warriors went on a major run after Butler made his Dubs debut, going 23-7. Golden State finished the season as the seventh seed in the Western Conference and faced the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. Behind Butler and Steph Curry, the Warriors beat the Rockets in seven games. However, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated Golden State in the second round in five games. Curry suffered a Grade 1 left hamstring strain in Game 1 and missed the rest of the series. Golden State Warriors stars Steph Curry (right) and Jimmy Butler get a new center in this NBA trade idea. Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Many people believe Curry and Butler need another All-Star scorer next to them to compete for the championship next season, which is why Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report proposed that the Warriors trade for Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic this offseason. Advertisement Bailey proposed the Dubs trade Moses Moody and Buddy Hield to the Bulls for Vucevic, the No. 45 pick in this year's draft and a 2028 second-round pick. "For the Warriors, this is a bit of a desperation move, since Vucevic is 34 and on an expiring contract," Bailey wrote. "His long-term value is nowhere near Moody's (hence, Chicago's inclusion of some draft capital). "But they were woefully thin at the 5 in 2024-25. And even at this age, Vuc is a starting center who can pass, space the floor and fit into Golden State's read-and-react system." Vucevic is a two-time All-Star. He averaged 18.5 points and 10.1 rebounds for the Bulls this season while shooting 53.0% from the field, 40.2% from 3 and 80.5% from the foul line. Advertisement The 34-year-old Vucevic will make $21.5 million next season in the final year of his contract. Vucevic has played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Bulls. He has career averages of 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds.
