Modesto PD to conduct DUI checkpoint Friday night
(FOX40.COM)—The Modesto Police Department is holding a DUI Checkpoint on Friday at 8 p.m. at an undisclosed location.
According to MPD, DUI checkpoint locations are based on the data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The main point of these checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

'Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,' Sergeant Robert Hall said. 'Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.'
MPD stated that they want to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. There are some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving.
MPD said, 'While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.'
Drivers that have been charged with a first-time DUI will face an average of $13,500 fines and penalties as well as a suspended license, stated MPD.
MPD said the funding of this program was by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Modesto man convicted of domestic violence. Used son as shield during arrest
A 29-year-old Modesto man has been convicted of multiple charges including domestic violence, felony assault and child endangerment and faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office. A jury found Isaiah Negrete guilty of a series of violent acts against his girlfriend, including strangling, punching and dragging her by her hair, prosecutors said in a news release. The woman suffered injuries in the assaults, which were part of an ongoing pattern of domestic abuse. When Modesto police officers attempted to arrest Negrete in October, he used his young son as a human shield to avoid being taken into custody, according to the DA's Office. Officers used nonlethal force to rescue the child and arrest Negrete. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Vita Palazuelos. The Modesto Police Department investigated the crimes, and the DA's Victim Services Unit supported the victim throughout the case. Negrete has a long history of domestic violence, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.

Mom wants answers after Miami rapper gunned downed in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mother of a rising rapper who was gunned down in Memphis wants to know why he was killed and wants police to catch all the people responsible. Toya Redwing is talking for the first time about her son's death on March 22 near the FedEx Forum. 1 dead, 1 injured in shooting downtown Letorian Hunt, 27, also known as Sayso P, was shot and killed outside the Westin Hotel. Houston Rapper Sauce Walka, whose real name is Albert Walker Mondane, was also wounded when at least three people jumped out of a white Charger and opened fire. Redwing said her son was born and raised in Memphis but lived in Miami. He was in town to visit a sick relative and had been looking forward to coming home. He had only been at the hotel a couple of days before the shooting. 'I want to know who did this. I want to know who sent them. This is what I told the detectives. These boys didn't do this on their own, at least I don't think so,' said Redwing. 'I don't think he was the intended target.' Shortly after the shooting, the 2021 Dodge Charger 392 Scat Pack was recovered, and police issued a warrant for Jayden Dandridge, 21, for first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Last week, Dandridge was found dead in Houston. His death was ruled a homicide. 'I was pretty much numb. I didn't cry or grieve for him. He killed my son, and I still want answers,' Redwing said. 'I can't get to the bottom of it if they are all dead.' Redwing said her son wanted to leave Memphis because of the violence. She said he had opened a recording studio in Miami and recently signed a distribution deal with Sauce Walka's record label. Redwing said her son was her best friend, and the pain of his loss has been unlike anything she has experienced before. 'The fact that he won't ever have children. I won't know what my grandkids look like. I won't know if he will have beautiful little daughters or little boys,' said Redwing. 'Watching his growth from a young boy to the man he had become was amazing.' Redwing said Memphis police are currently outmanned and outgunned. She hopes the FBI will step in, as promised, to help, but believes people in the community also need to get involved to stop the crime. The rapper's mom said she would like to start a foundation to help other mothers dealing with the same kind of grief. She also wants to provide resources to young people who are falling through the cracks and committing these acts of violence. 'I've heard, why do you care about them. Screw them. Those people killed your kid,' said Redwing. 'I can't say that with a straight face and be me. They need to be held accountable, but I do know a lot of these kids want a way out.' California gun control bill that could ban popular Glock pistol sales moves forward
( — A bill that could ban the sale of the most popular handgun in the U.S. is potentially on its way to becoming law after it passed through the California State Assembly on Tuesday. Assembly Bill 1127, also referred to by many people as the Glock Ban Bill, was authored by Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) and would prohibit licensed firearms dealers from selling guns that can be 'easily converted by hand or with common household tools' into a machine gun. Although the Glock isn't specifically mentioned in the written legislation, it falls into that category of firearms. New gun laws won't be enforced by Sutter County Sheriff's Office 'I am pleased to be presenting AB 1127, which will protect communities from mass shootings and gun violence by encouraging gun manufacturers to prevent the conversion of their firearms to dangerous automatic weapons,' Gabriel said during an Assembly Standing Committee hearing. He continued, 'Automatic weapons are exceptionally lethal and capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute. They are illegal in California. Unfortunately, some semi-automatic firearms feature a dangerous design flaw that allows them to be converted to fully automatic weapons through an attachment of a cheap and easy-to-use device, known as a switch.' In 2022, a converted Glock was reportedly used in a mass shooting that occurred just blocks from the California State Capitol Building. It left six people dead and several others injured. 'Sadly, certain companies in the gun industry have known about this issue for decades and have done nothing meaningful to address it,' Gabriel said. 'This common-sense legislation will ensure that the gun industry is held accountable and that we're doing everything we possibly can to protect our communities from mass shootings.' AB 1127 is supported by organizations like Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and Voices for Progress. However, other groups such as the National Association for Gun Rights and Gun Owners of California Inc. are in opposition. 'AB 1127 is a blatant attack on your right to own one of the most common self-defense firearms in America,' Gun Owners of California said on social media before the bill passed through the Assembly. 'This bill targets semiautomatic pistols used by millions of law-abiding gun owners—and it's being pushed under the false pretense of 'safety'.' NAGR vowed to fight back against the proposed legislation. 'California (is) pushing rapidly towards a total ban of Glock pistols,' NAGR said on social media. 'The most popular firearm in the country.
