Heather Rae El Moussa is sharing how her blended family approaches Mother's Day
The proud mom also tells PEOPLE what's been the biggest parenting lesson she's learned so far and how her toddler son has become a bit of a picky eater
The HGTV star shares her son Tristan, 2, with husband Tarek El Moussa and is stepmom to his two kids Taylor, 11, and Brayden, 9Heather Rae El Moussa is sharing what a typical Mother's Day looks like for her blended family.
Ahead of Mother's Day on Sunday, May 11, the Flipping El Moussas star, 37, spoke with PEOPLE about her new partnership with Orgain and shared what traditions her family does every year. El Moussa shares her 2-year-old son Tristan with husband Tarek El Moussa and is stepmom to his two kids — daughter Taylor, 14, and son Brayden, 9 — whom he shares with ex Christina Haack.
"Usually — and I'm thankful for Christina that I get to spend time with the kids — we'll do a brunch with the kids and then she'll do something else with them later on in the day," Heather tells PEOPLE.

"And we get together with my side of the family, Tarek's side of the family, we usually do a brunch. I try not to cook or do anything at the house because I don't want to clean up," she continues. "So it's like getting out of the house, celebrating and then coming home and just sharing the day with Tristan and Tarek after the kids go to Christina's house."
Now that she has two years of parenting — and about three years of step-parenting — under her belt, Heather has few lessons she's learned to make the journey easier.
"Patience. Definitely patience," she says of the biggest lesson she's learned. "And then you got to be selfless when you have children and they come first no matter what."
"But the biggest thing I've learned is how much I love being a mom. I absolutely love it. I thrive. It's my favorite thing in the world. I love being a step-mom," Heather continues. "And then that took me into wanting to have my own baby. And Tristan has been such an amazing gift in my life and I just love it more than I thought I was going to."
With such a busy schedule balancing three different kids, her career and her relationship, Heather says she's loves leaning on Orgain's nutritional shakes.
"Orgain is great because they have a variety of drinks for everybody and a lot of options," the proud mom, who has been drinking the vegan shakes since she was pregnant with Tristan, says. "As a busy mom to two older children, I have a husband, I was a mom to a newborn, I needed something that was really easy and they're packed with minerals and nutrients."
"Health and wellness is really important in our life. Tarek is a [two-time] cancer survivor, so I'm really big on making sure that the kids are healthy, Tarek is healthy, I'm healthy," Heather continues. "It's just a very natural partnership that is really near and dear to my heart."
Even Tristan drinks the shakes — and Heather admits it's not always easy to get her toddler to eat.
"He's so funny. The doctors would be like, 'Oh just eat with them and they'll be interested in what you're eating.' No way," she says. "This kid does not want anything. He has his staples and he likes what he likes and that's it. But I am lucky that he loves smoothies."
"He loves the chocolate peanut butter Orgain protein, so I can mix that in. He loves fruit if I put in fruit so I can kind of get things in there without him knowing what he is actually having," she says. "But he is picky, yes. I never thought I would have a picky child."
"And I'm like, 'Oh, he's going to be eating vegetables and this...' No, he loves grilled cheese. He loves peanut butter and jellies, smoothies and fruit and pretzels."

'I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening,' he said in a teaser clip shared for the interview on June 12 (via Page Six). To this, Sawyer said, 'It's not a dream,' which Dane repeated back to her. 'I don't think this is the end of my story,' he continued. 'I don't feel like this is the end of me.' Dane revealed his diagnosis back in April, just weeks after he and wife Rebecca Gayheart called off their divorce. Dane's full Good Morning America interview is slated to air on June 16. The couple share two children, and Gayheart filed for divorce back in February 2018; she filed documents to have the petition dismissed in March 2025. In a statement to People in April, Dane said of his ALS diagnosis, 'I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.' He also requested privacy as they figured out how to move through this next stage of their lives. He also shared that he will reprise his role of Cal Jacobs for season 3 of Euphoria, which began filming not long after Dane announced his diagnosis. ALS is a rare degenerative disease that has no cure; according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, people typically live three to five years after diagnosis, although some patients can live decades.
