Elizabeth Weber reemerges after decades for Billy Joel's HBO documentary
Elizabeth Weber, Billy Joel's first wife and longtime former manager, made headlines this week by publicly speaking for the first time in 43 years. The 82-year-old appeared at the premiere of And So It Goes, HBO's new two-part documentary on the music icon, during the 2025 Tribeca Festival in New York. Weber, often referred to as Joel's muse and the inspiration behind several of his classic songs, attended the event with her son Sean Small. Reflecting on her eight-year marriage to Joel, she told People, 'It was great then, it's great whenever I think about it, and it's great now.' The documentary dives deep into Billy Joel's early struggles, creative rise, and personal pain — much of which centered around Elizabeth. The two had a controversial beginning, with Elizabeth initially married to Joel's bandmate Jon Small. Despite the rocky start, she and Joel married in 1973, with Weber becoming a strategic force behind his success. She reportedly pushed him to release 'Just the Way You Are' — a decision that won him two Grammys. Weber also inspired iconic songs such as 'She's Always a Woman' and 'The Stranger.' However, their marriage ended in the early 1980s amid Joel's growing substance issues and a near-fatal motorcycle accident. Now, re-entering public life, Weber says she joined the project after encouragement from her granddaughters and co-director Susan Lacy. Notably absent was Joel, 75, who is recovering from normal pressure hydrocephalus. According to Lacy, he is undergoing physical therapy and is expected to recover fully. Weber's return offers rare insight into a pivotal yet misunderstood chapter of Billy Joel's career and personal life.

Billy Joel cancels concerts after brain disorder
US singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel took to Instagram on Friday to announce that he is cancelling all his scheduled concerts after he was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder. In line with his diagnosis, the 76-year-old singer added in his statement that he is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing while he recovers, according to a statement on social media. "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding," Joel said. The artist's condition was exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance, added the statement. Citing the Cleveland Clinic, Reuters reported that the condition, which is more likely in people over the age of 65, occurs when fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. Its symptoms resemble those of dementia and can sometimes be reversible. Joel, known for hits like Piano Man and Uptown Girl, ended his record-breaking monthly Madison Square Garden residency – which had begun in 2014 – last year. During his nine-year residency, the singer performed a total of 150 sold-out shows. According to The Guardian, Joel's team stated that the 23-time Grammy winner was "thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage." The publication noted that Joel's cancelled dates include 17 stops in North America and the UK. However, whilst the artist may no longer be fit to perform, two-part documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes will premiere at the Tribeca film festival next in New York next month.

Billy Joel cancels all concerts following health diagnosis
Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all scheduled concerts following a recent health diagnosis that has affected his ability to perform. The 76-year-old 'Piano Man' singer revealed that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition that has worsened his balance, hearing, and vision. The announcement was made on May 23, through a post shared on his Instagram account. Joel explained that his condition, which had been aggravated by recent performances, has led to significant challenges in his health. His medical team has recommended physical therapy, and he has been advised to refrain from performing while he focuses on recovery. "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding," Joel said in his statement. In the wake of his diagnosis, Joel also expressed his gratitude for the care he is receiving and reassured his fans that he is fully committed to prioritizing his health. "I look forward to the day when I can once again take the stage," he added. The cancellation includes several highly anticipated concerts across North America and England, including shows in New York City, New Orleans, Toronto, and Liverpool. Ticket refunds will be processed automatically without requiring any action from ticket holders. This announcement follows a February onstage fall during a performance at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, which led to the postponement of Joel's tour dates through June. Despite the setback, his team has stated that the singer is expected to make a full recovery, with plans to resume his tour in July 2025. Joel, whose career spans decades, has earned five Grammy Awards and sold over 150 million records. He remains one of the most influential figures in the music industry. More updates on his recovery and future performances are expected.
