Anti-sacrilege bill introduced in Punjab Assembly
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann introduced the 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill 2025' in the House.
Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa described the sacrilege issue as serious and urged the Speaker to hold the discussion on the bill on Tuesday.
Before the start of the third day of the special session of the state Assembly, the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture Bill, 2025 a state-specific law was cleared by the cabinet in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mann here.
The bill mandates strict punishment, extending up to life imprisonment, for the desecration of holy scriptures, including the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran, an official spokesperson said after the cabinet meeting.
With the enactment of the law, the State seeks to further strengthen the ethos of communal harmony, brotherhood, peace, and amity. It will also act as a strong deterrent against anti-social and anti-national activities by ensuring severe punishment for perpetrators of this heinous crime, said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson said there have been numerous incidents in the past involving the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and other revered granths, deeply wounding public sentiments and causing unrest in society.
While sections 298, 299 and 300 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, address such issues, they do not prescribe sufficiently stringent penalties to serve as an effective deterrent, said the spokesperson.
Considering the gravity of such offences and the imperative to preserve communal harmony and religious sanctity, the Cabinet found it necessary to introduce state-specific legislation providing enhanced penalties - including life imprisonment - for those convicted of sacrilege against any holy granth.
Notably, until now, no specific legislation existed that directly addressed offences against 'holy granths', often resulting in leniency or evasion of serious action by culprits, said the spokesperson.
This new legislation aims to fill that legal void by criminalising and prescribing punishments for acts of sacrilege across all sects and faiths.
Under the proposed law, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life.
Those attempting the offence may be sentenced to three to five years, while individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. PTi CHS VSD RT

Pawar says he was offered 160-seat win
Nagpur: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said two people had approached him ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, claiming they could guarantee 160 out of 288 seats. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Pawar said he facilitated a meeting between these people and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, but the two leaders ultimately dismissed the offer, stating, 'This is not our way'. 'We did not give it the attention it perhaps required. But I still remember — before the Assembly elections were announced, two people came to meet me in Delhi. They told me that Maharashtra has 288 Assembly seats, and out of those, they would guarantee us 160 seats. I was surprised. To be clear, even though they claimed such a guarantee, I had no doubts about the Election Commission. But such people do show up, so I ignored them.' 'I arranged their meeting with Rahul Gandhi. They told him whatever they wanted to. However, both Rahul Gandhi and I felt that we should not pay attention to such things. This is not our path. We decided we would go before the people and find ways to earn their support,' Pawar told reporters in Nagpur. Pawar lauded Rahul Gandhi's recent presentation on alleged polling irregularities and criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for seeking a separate affidavit from him. 'The Election Commission is an independent body. Rahul Gandhi said he has already taken an oath in Parliament, so there is no need for a separate affidavit. If the Election Commission still insists on such a thing, that is not right. Rahul Gandhi's allegations need to be probed in depth. The truth must come out. My only point is that the objection was regarding the Election Commission. Then why do BJP leaders or the chief minister need to respond? We want an answer from the Election Commission, not from the BJP,' said Pawar. Referring to the recent INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, Pawar dismissed speculation over Uddhav Thackeray's seating position, comparing it humorously to movie-goers avoiding the front row. 'First, I must say I have been seeing since yesterday that there is politics over where Uddhav Thackeray was seated in Delhi. When you watch a presentation, you don't sit in the first row just as when you go to watch a movie, you don't sit in the first row, you sit further back. Similarly, I, too, was seated at the back. The point is, you don't sit close to the screen; you keep some distance. Unfortunately, politics is being done over where Uddhav Thackeray was seated,' he said. Hours after Pawar's comments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Opposition has a habit of lying and running away. 'Although Rahul Gandhi has often raised doubts about the EVM machines, Sharad Pawar has never said so. In fact, Sharad Pawar has often taken a clear stand that it is wrong to blame the EVMs. However, now, after Rahul Gandhi's meeting, Sharad Pawar has suddenly started talking about changes in the voting process. This is the result of Rahul Gandhi's meeting,' said Fadnavis. 'No matter how much confusion the Opposition creates, elections are not held anywhere as transparent and free as in India. Those who accuse EVMs and the Election Commission speak in public. But they are not ready to give an affidavit. They say that we have taken an oath in Parliament. But is the oath in Parliament valid in the Supreme Court and the high court? They know that if they are caught lying, criminal action can be taken against them tomorrow. Therefore, these are cowardly people who lie and run away every day,' criticised Fadnavis.

Punjab CM: Anti-drone system to tackle cross-border smuggling
Chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday flagged off Baaj Akh, an anti-drone system, in Tarn Taran to check the smuggling of weapons and drugs through drones from Pakistan. CM Bhagwant Mann at an event in Tarn Taran. Three such units have been launched and six others will be introduced soon, Kejriwal said while accusing previous regimes of hobnobbing with drug smugglers. He said the properties acquired by drug smugglers through the illegal drug trade were being demolished. 'The smugglers who enjoy luxuries while poisoning society are the enemies of our people. They won't be spared,' he said. CM Mann, highlighting that ₹51.4 crore was being spent on the anti-drone units, said the move to set up nine such systems was aimed at strengthening the border security and tackling the challenges posed by drone-based smuggling. He said the decision was part of the Yudh Nadheyan Virudh (anti-drug war) campaign.'Armed forces and the BSF have been using such systems. Punjab is the first state in the country to deploy the same at the international border. It will give a strong response to drug smugglers from across the border,' he said. He hailed the security forces for working tirelessly to stop the cross-border drug trafficking. 'In 2024, 283 drones carrying heroin, weapons and ammunition were seized. As many as 137 drones have been seized this year. The anti-drone system will be deployed along the border from Pathankot to Fazilka as the second line of defence in coordination with the BSF,' he said. The chief minister said that any drone entering the state through the border can be immediately neutralised. Previously, the Punjab Police did not have any such system to neutralise drones. He also said these systems come with automated alert technology, which immediately notifies authorities upon detecting drone movement, thus eliminating the need for manual monitoring. He said that to ensure the successful implementation of this advanced system, coordination will be maintained with BSF, the Indian Air Force, the army and other agencies. Mann said that the anti-drug curriculum has been already introduced in schools under the 'war against drugs' campaign with an aim to make eight lakh students aware of the menace.
