Liberty know they need to fix defensive shortcomings before it's too late

This isn't the version of the Liberty defense that held every opponent under 88 points the first nine games of the season. This isn't the version that managed to overcome the loss of defensive anchor Betnijah Laney-Hamilton — out for the season on a suspended contract after March knee surgery — and adapt, either.
On paper, the Liberty still have the No. 2 defensive rating in the WNBA this season (97.3), behind just the Lynx, but after getting torched by the Mercury 106-91 on Friday, and allowing over 100 points for the second time in six games, defensive issues have become glaring.
The effort from the reigning champions was blasted — by head coach Sandy Brondello, by offseason acquisition Natasha Cloud — after their latest defensive dud, too.

Though the Liberty will be without two starters in Leonie Fiebich (EuroBasket with Germany) and Jonquel Jones (right ankle sprain) again Sunday when they face Atlanta, they've refused to let that become an excuse for what transpired in Phoenix and, by extension, the fourth-worst defensive rating (107.2) in the league the past two weeks.
'I don't care who's not with us,' Brondello said postgame. 'I don't care. They're not gonna save us here. What we've got, this is it.'
The Liberty could get Fiebich back for their July 3 game against the Sparks, The Post's Madeline Kenney reported earlier this week. Germany lost to Belgium in the quarterfinals, won a classification game against Turkey and will face Czechia for fifth place on Sunday — when the Liberty complete their current road trip with a game against the Dream.
Jones, however, suffered the sprain to the same ankle she injured earlier in the year and will miss at least another three to five weeks, based on the Liberty's initial projection from last Saturday.

Brondello called the Liberty 'soft' after the Mercury game, where they allowed 61 points in the first half and surrendered 18 3-pointers. She said they had 'no toughness' while defending.
They didn't make Phoenix uncomfortable at all, and the Mercury became the seventh Liberty opponent in the past eight games to shoot over 41 percent from the field. The Liberty's strength, dating back to when Breanna Stewart and Jones arrived to join Sabrina Ionescu ahead of the 2023 campaign, has been their offense. An ability to approach 100 points regularly. A surplus of options to carry the scoring each game.

But they also flashed strong defensive potential, too, and finished with the No. 3 defensive rating each of the past two seasons. Stewart earned a spot on First-Team All-Defense in both seasons. Laney-Hamilton consistently shut down stars, including the Fever's Caitlin Clark. Fiebich, after carving out a consistent role late last season, helped with wing defense.

But the Liberty's unit will continue to look different until Jones and Fiebich return. They won't get Laney-Hamilton back at all this season.
Though they attempted to mount a comeback early in the third quarter Friday, while they produced some stops and started to claw back into the game, they can't just do that in spurts, Cloud said. If they can go on those defensive runs, she said, that only means 'we can give it for the totality of the game.'
Through their opening 15 games, the Liberty have, once again, demonstrated an ability to operate as one of the league's elite offenses. They entered Saturday with the best offensive rating (108.5) in the WNBA, set the record for 3-pointers in a game with 19 and then tied their own mark just games later.
But that might not matter in the marathon of a season — and whatever follows in the playoffs — without the defense to complement it.
'We say often we have a lot of weapons on the offensive end all throughout our roster,' Cloud said, 'but if we don't get stops, that offense doesn't mean anything.'

Liberty was a clear favorite to win Conference USA and there was a lot of buzz about the Flames representing the Group of 5 in the College Football Playoff. Not so fast. Liberty finished 8-4 overall, and just 5-3 in C-USA. The Favorite Despite their down year and the transfer of Salter to Colorado, Liberty is once again the runaway favorite in Conference USA, perhaps the weakest in the Group of 5. It may seem odd to install the Flames as such a short favorite, but the reality is that this program can outspend the rest of the teams in the conference by a wide margin. The Flames may be breaking in a new quarterback — Ethan Vasko, a transfer from Coastal Carolina, is the projected starter — but he will have plenty of experience in front of — and around — him. Getty Images It's also likely that Vasko and the offense won't be asked to be prolific because Liberty's defense projects to be one of the best in the Group of 5. With a terrific coach, plenty of money and a lot of talent and experience throughout the roster, Liberty remains a step above the rest of C-USA. We could have said the same thing last year, though. Dark horses Western Kentucky is the second favorite behind Liberty, and that seems a bit crazy considering the amount of turnover in Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers saw 80 total transfers (in and out) take place over the offseason, and they'll have new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Tyson Helton has been steady as she goes for WKU, but he'll need to work some serious magic for this team to win eight-plus games for the fifth year running. There will also be upheaval at Jacksonville State (Rich Rodriguez has departed for West Virginia) and Sam Houston State (K.C. Keeler left for Temple, and defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity took a bunch of his players to North Texas), making them unappealing at their short prices to provide a challenge for Liberty. The case for Louisiana Tech is that there's not much of a difference between the Bulldogs and the teams priced above them, but it's been pretty dire under Sonny Cumbie, and the odds are not enticing enough to bet on a turnaround just because the rest of the conference is wanting. Long shots The path to success for the also-rans in C-USA is that the rest of the conference won't put up that much resistance. That's the starting point, at least. For a team like Middle Tennessee State, it may be enough if Derek Mason gets things moving in Year 2. Getty Images Then there's FIU, which is just hoping Willie Simmons can lead them out of no man's land in his debut season with the Panthers. Kennesaw State returns plenty of its roster, but that may not be a good thing considering how it played in 2024. There is one team, however, that does stand out as a good bet in this range. Betting on College Football? Best bet to win Conference USA UTEP to win Conference USA (14/1, bet365) | UTEP to make the CFB Playoff (300/1, DraftKings) We'll start with UTEP, who profile as a potential bounce-back candidate after a poor but also quite unlucky 3-9 campaign in Scotty Walden's first year in El Paso. Walden tried to accelerate the turnaround by getting aggressive in the transfer portal, notably adding former five-star recruit and USC quarterback Malachi Nelson to his ranks. Nelson immediately becomes one of the most interesting players in the Group of 5. His ceiling is as high as anybody's at this level, but he's not come close to hitting it while at USC and Boise State. If Nelson can click with his new offensive coordinator Mark Cala, the Miners could turn this conference on its head. I think the Miners are absolutely worth a bet to win C-USA at 14/1 odds, and I'd also consider a very small sprinkle on them to make the Playoff at 300/1. Picks up! LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Sparks have been one of the hottest teams in the WNBA going back before the All-Star break with a record of 10-4 in their last 14 games. That run was cooled off a bit following their 105-97 loss on Tuesday against the New York Liberty. The Sparks now head out on a mini-road trip with the playoffs still within full reach, and Dearica Hamby summed up the team's mindset as they continue to make a push for the postseason. 'Just continue the momentum we've had the last 12 games. One game shouldn't break us,' Hamby said. 'We did a lot of things well, and we didn't play our best basketball. But we got three really important games coming up that we need and should win, and go from there.' The Sparks upcoming road trip will consist of two games, one against the Dallas Wings on Friday and the other against the Washington Mystics on Sunday. The team then returns home on Wednesday, Aug. 20 against the Wings to complete the three-game stretch against teams under .500. If the Sparks are serious about making the playoffs, they should win those three games as Dearica Hamby said. As it stands, the Sparks are currently 15-17 and half a game behind the Seattle Storm for the eighth and final playoff spot. They hold the current tiebreaker with the Storm with one more head-to-head matchup before the end of the regular season. With the Sparks continuing their season-turnaround, Hamby has been one of the steadying influences on this team. During the team's most recent win last Sunday against the Storm, it was Hamby who scored the go-ahead basket in the final seconds that ultimately would be the game-winner. She's appeared in all 32 games to this point at a little over 31 minutes per game. She's been averaging a career-high 17.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals with splits of 56.9 percent shooting from the field, 27.3 percent shooting from the three-point line and 61.1 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Hamby, alongside Kelsey Plum, have been the Sparks' leaders this season, and following the Liberty loss, head coach Lynne Roberts reaffirmed her belief in her two stars' leadership during the final stretch of the regular season. 'These are two of the best players in the league, and so for me, I don't worry about these two. I trust that they'll lead the way and show up the way stars, All-Stars show up. And that's what it's going to take. We've had a good run but we're not done yet,' Roberts said. 'I don't have any doubt in these two next to me that they're going to be ready to shoot nails come the next game. And that's what leadership is, and that's what being one of the best players, that's the responsibility that comes with it.'
