China's Xi Jinping urges Singapore PM Lawrence Wong to resist ‘hegemony', support fairer global trade
BEIJING, June 24 — Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Singapore's prime minister to join the fight against 'hegemony' and protectionism in trade as they met in Beijing on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's first official visit to China lasts until Thursday.
He met Xi on Tuesday morning at Beijing's opulent Great Hall of the People, with the Chinese leader urging their two countries to work to 'stand on the right side of history and on the side of fairness and justice', according to state broadcaster CCTV.
He told Wong that 'the world cannot return to hegemony or be dragged back to the law of the jungle', a veiled swipe at the United States, after President Donald Trump launched a barrage of tariffs this year on countries including China and Singapore.
Wong, in turn, told Xi he believed the Singapore-China relationship was 'more important than before' in a time of 'global turbulence and uncertainty'.
'We can work together to establish closer ties and... continue to strengthen multilateralism and the rules-based global order for the benefit of all countries,' Wong said.
Wong, who succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, the son of founding premier Lee Kuan Yew, in 2024, has warned the trade-dependent city-state could be hit hard by Trump's tariffs.
Although Trump imposed a baseline 10 percent tariff on Singapore, the country is vulnerable to a global economic slowdown caused by the much higher levies on dozens of other countries because of its heavy reliance on international trade.
Following his meetings in Beijing, Wong will head to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for a meeting of the World Economic Forum. — AFP

Pahang's PET30 to drive economic transformation across state
BENTONG: The Pahang Economic Transformation 2025-2030 (PET30) is a strategic initiative aimed at reshaping the economic landscape of the east coast state into a more sustainable, inclusive and people-centric model. PET30 is built upon three main pillars namely the well-being of the people, environmental responsibility and economic growth driven by the private sector. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail described it not merely as a development plan, but as a comprehensive transformation exercise based on the state's resource strengths, current global market realities and the aspirations of its people. "PET30 will focus on strengthening the agro-food and plantation industries, advancing materials development, promoting nature-based tourism, enhancing human capital and workforce quality, and driving regional transformation and district empowerment. "Conserving forests and biodiversity will serve as the foundation of the green economy. "The green economy is a strategic asset, not only from the perspective of ecological sustainability but also as a new engine of growth, including carbon investment and the climate economy," he said in a statement today. Wan Rosdy earlier attended the PET30 master plan workshop led by Pahang Economic Advisory Council chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Nazir Abdul Razak at Genting Highlands near here today. Meanwhile, Wan Rosdy emphasised that strategic infrastructure projects, such as the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park, East Coast Rail Link, Kuantan Port, Pekan Automotive Park, Central Spine Road, and Gebeng, would be fully leveraged as catalysts for investments. He said PET30 could not rely solely on policy documents but must be translated into concrete actions, supported by strict monitoring, key performance indicators, and cross-agency collaboration. "I call upon all parties to treat the years 2025 to 2030 as an era of execution, not just planning. We must step out of our comfort zones and act swiftly to steer Pahang toward a more prosperous future. "I am confident that PET30 will build a more prosperous, sustainable, and united future for the benefit of all the people in Pahang and future generations," he said.

Singh will join fellow defence ministers in the eastern city of Qingdao for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit starting Wednesday. He will 'outline India's vision towards achieving greater international peace & security, call for joint & consistent efforts to eliminate terrorism & extremism in the region', a defence ministry statement said. Singh will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from China and Russia, which are alliance members alongside Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus. Ahead of the two-day SCO meeting, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks in Beijing with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. Doval 'underscored the need to promote the overall development of the India-China bilateral relations', New Delhi said Monday. Wang said relations have 'seen some positive developments' since the two countries' leaders met last year, China's foreign ministry said. Beijing has granted permission to Indian pilgrims wishing to trek to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a site holy to Hindus and Buddhists, for the first time since the deadly 2020 clash. The rival countries have also agreed to expedite resuming direct flights.
