Cabinet Office may lease government-owned disaster food trucks to businesses
The Cabinet Office is considering a program that would allow local governments to lease such vehicles to business operators in normal times and receive maintenance fees in return, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.
It plans to conduct a survey in fiscal 2025 to learn the current status of these food trucks across the country.
As local governments face severe financial conditions, the Cabinet Office intends to pave the way for them to receive help from the private sector in preparing for natural disasters, which are becoming more frequent and devastating.
Local governments rushed to buy food trucks and restroom trailers after such vehicles were made eligible for regional revitalization grants under the central government's supplementary budget for fiscal 2024.
However, food trucks require a cook to operate, whereas restroom trailers are easier to use at events. In addition, it is necessary to confirm whether local governments are legally allowed to lease their assets for profit.
"It may be efficient if business operators using food trucks in normal times are mobilized in times of emergency," said a Cabinet Office official.
The Cabinet Office will review laws including those on food sanitation and vehicle management to see whether there are any rules that prevent the wider use of the food trucks.

Two Chinese government ships enter Japan's waters off Senkaku Islands
Two Chinese government ships entered Japan's territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture in the East China Sea early Saturday. The Japan Coast Guard says the vessels moved into the waters off Uotsuri Island at around 12:52 a.m. and around 12:53 a.m., and tried to approach a Japanese fishing boat there. Coast guard officials are monitoring the ships and warning them to immediately leave Japan's waters. They say the vessels are equipped with cannons. As of 1 a.m., one was navigating about 21 kilometers south-southwest of Uotsuri Island and the other about 21 kilometers west-southwest of the island. The officials say both were sailing in the north-northeasterly direction. The coast guard has deployed patrol vessels around the Japanese fishing boat to ensure its safety. Chinese government ships were last confirmed entering Japanese territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands on July 9. Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.

Nintendo to raise U.S. pricing of original Switch hardware
Nintendo will raise the price of its original Switch console in the U.S. beginning Sunday, the company said Friday in a statement posted to its website. Nintendo attributed the changes to "market conditions.' The Switch OLED and Lite models will also see price changes, along with other products, including some Switch 2 accessories. Pricing for the new Switch 2 is unchanged. The Switch 2 has been a huge hit. Nintendo sold over 6 million units during the console's first seven weeks at retail, the company revealed with its earnings this week. Still, the company has been wrestling with the impact of the Trump administration's tariffs. Nintendo increased the cost of Switch 2 accessories ahead of its launch in early June. That was the company's immediate response after the U.S. began levying tariffs on trade partners including Japan, where Nintendo is headquartered, along with Vietnam and China, which handles the bulk of manufacturing for the video game company. Other Nintendo products impacted by the price changes include the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo. The company didn't specify what the new prices will be. The original Switch was priced at $299 and the Switch 2 at $449.
