Woman charged after toddler is found in suitcase in New Zealand bus' luggage compartment
The bus driver made the discovery during a scheduled stop in Kaiwaka, a Northland Region town, New Zealand Police Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement.
The suspect asked to access the compartment during the stop, said Harrison, acting crime manager for the Auckland-adjacent district of Waitematā.
"The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving," he said. "When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl."
The toddler was taken to a hospital for an "extensive medical assessment" and was "reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed," Harrison said.
The suspect, a 27-year-old woman whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with "ill-treatment/neglect" of a child, he said. Further charges are not being ruled out, he added.
She is due in court Monday, Harrison said.
It is not clear why the toddler was in a suitcase. Entrada Travel Group, which operates New Zealand's national bus line, InterCity, acknowledged that the incident involved one of its buses.
The bus line says online that children up to 2 years old travel free if they do so on a guardian's lap. Children 3 and older may travel with guardians, but that requires a child ticket, usually sold at a deeply discounted rate.
"We are aware of an incident involving a passenger on one of our services," Entrada Travel Group said by email. "Police were called to respond and are investigating the matter. No one was harmed during the incident, and the service resumed."
It said it could not comment further amid the ongoing investigation.
Harrison praised the bus driver for being aware and taking action.
"We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome," he said.

More sex toys get thrown during Liberty, Fever games as one appears to hit Sophie Cunningham
A fan's arrest has seemingly not stopped others from throwing sex toys at WNBA games. In two separate incidents on Tuesday night, what appeared to be green dildos were thrown at Barclays Center during the Liberty-Wings contest and at Arena while the Fever took on the Sparks, as seen in videos that went viral on social media. In the Los Angeles game, the green object reached the court and appeared to hit or nearly touch Fever star Sophie Cunningham as Indiana prepared to inbound the ball under the opposing basket late in the second quarter. Sparks star Kelsey Plum kicked the object off the playing surface. During the Liberty's win over the Wings, a sex toy was allegedly thrown at the game but did not reach the court, according to a fan's video of the incident. The Liberty declined comment when sought by The Post. The latest two incidents come amid a spate of sex toys being thrown onto the floor at recent games, with both Cunningham and Sky star Angel Reese being vocal in their displeasure. New Zealand woman arrested after toddler found in suitcase on bus
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Authorities in New Zealand have arrested a 27-year-old woman after a 2-year-old girl was found stuffed into a suitcase on a bus. The unidentified woman has been charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. She was arrested on Sunday after police were called at about 12:50 a.m. local time when a passenger bus arrived at a planned stop in Kaiwaka, about 60 miles north of Auckland, and the driver noticed a bag moving in the luggage compartment. "When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the 2-year-old girl," Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement. "The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed." The child has since been transported to a hospital where she remains, undergoing what authorities called an extensive medical assessment. Authorities did not state the relationship between the woman and the child. "We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome," Harrison said. Oranga Tamariki, New Zealand's Ministry for Children, has been notified.
