‘I depend on Depends': Deion Sanders jokes as he reveals secret bladder cancer and its aftermath
Sanders, 58, revealed the news Monday and joked that he now uses Depends, the absorbent underwear brand. Sanders, dressed in a cowboy hat and a pair of sunglasses, told reporters he dropped 25 pounds as he battled the disease and encouraged everybody to 'get checked out.'
'I depend on Depends, if you know what I mean,' Sanders quipped as the room laughed. 'I truly depend on Depends. I cannot control my bladder.'
"If you see a Porta-Potty on the sideline, it's real,' he added. 'I'm just telling you right now, you're going to see it."
Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urologic oncology at UCHealth, told reporters Sanders had surgery to remove his bladder and create a new one. Sanders's cancer is now cured, Kukreja said as the room applauded.
'We're lucky to have found it at this stage where I could say the word cure, because I don't use that word lightly as a cancer doctor,' she said.
The coach kept his diagnosis close to his chest and noted he's 'thankful' that the news didn't leak. Sanders particularly wanted to keep the news from his sons as they prepared for the NFL draft earlier this year.
'My sons, to this day, don't know what transpired,' Sanders revealed. 'I just told them something with my foot again, because I wanted them to focus on making the team and not focused on Dad.'
Sanders's physicians caught his bladder cancer after he went in for a routine CT scan to check for blood clots. He encouraged others to see their doctors regularly, noting he 'probably wouldn't be sitting here today' without his medical team.
'If it wasn't for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn't have stumbled up on this,' he said. 'Make sure you go to the get the right care.'
Team trainer Lauren Askevold said Sanders 'never folded one time and never wavered.'
'You couldn't ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right,' she said. 'So it's been awesome. It's been a hectic journey, but there's a blessing very in disguise with all this."
Sanders paused and clasped his hands as he told reporters that he's grateful for his recovery.
'It has been a tremendous journey, and I'm truly thankful that God is so good,' he said. 'God is so good. You have no idea.'

Deion Sanders breaks down stigma around bladder cancer diagnosis: "Let's stop being ashamed"
University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders got candid about the challenges he went through with his bladder cancer diagnosis, from dealing with a catheter to using adult diapers and more. In a news conference Monday, Sanders, 57, revealed he is now cancer-free, but didn't shy away from sharing details on what he called his tremendous and tough journey. "I'm still dealing with going to the bathroom. It's a whole life change," he said. "I'm gonna be transparent. I can't pee like I used to pee. It's totally different." With a smile, he added he has to "depend on Depend," referencing the adult diaper brand. "I cannot control my bladder, so I get up to go to the bathroom already four or five times a night," he added. He joked that he's going through the "same trials and tribulations" as his young grandson. "I'm making a joke out of it, but it's real. So if you see port-a-potty on the sideline, it's real. I'm just telling you right now, you're gonna see it." In addition to the changes to his bladder control, he also dropped about 25 pounds throughout the treatment process, which included laparoscopic surgery to remove his bladder and the creation of a new one from other tissue. Sanders said he's still about 12 pounds below his average weight but feels "strong," "able" and "ready." Sanders said he recognized a lot of other people are going through what he is, and he wanted to send them a special message: "Let's stop being ashamed of it, and let's deal with it, and let's deal with it head-on." He also used the opportunity to encourage others to take care of their health and get checkups. "Men, everybody, get checked out, because if it wasn't for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn't have stumbled up on this," he said. "Especially African American men, we don't like going to the doctors. We don't like nothing to do with a doctor." But he added he's "not just talking to the brothers — I'm talking to my Caucasian brothers, my Hispanic brothers, my Asian brothers, my everybody — and my sisters. Get checked out. Because it could have been a whole other gathering if I hadn't."

Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.
