Jannik Sinner says he considered quitting tennis before Australian Open, amid doping furore

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner said this week he considered quitting the sport because of the turmoil surrounding his doping suspension.

When asked in a Rai TV interview on Tuesday if there was ever a moment when he wanted to give it all up, the 23-year-old hesitated briefly before responding: 'Yes. I remember that I wasn't in a very happy place before the Australian Open this year.'
At the start of January in Melbourne – a grand slam that he won – it was still unclear whether Sinner would face a lengthy suspension before his doping case from 2024, when he blamed a masseur for giving him a banned cream.
In the end, a deal was made whereby he would receive a short three-month ban and return for the Italian Open starting next week.
He said he was anxious around the turn of the year about what 2025 might bring.

'I arrived in Australia and didn't feel comfortable, whether in the locker room or while eating. The players were looking at me differently,' he added. 'That wasn't nice.

Alcaraz wins Cincinnati Open as Sinner retires

Alcaraz wins Cincinnati Open as Sinner retires Alcaraz has now claimed three Masters 1000 crowns in 2025 after his win in Cincinnati. Photo: Reuters Sinner withdrew from the title match after just five games into the opening set. Photo: Reuters Carlos Alcaraz won the ATP Cincinnati Open title on Monday after defending champion Jannik Sinner retired due to illness during the first set. World number one Sinner came into the final feeling poorly and lost the first seven points of the match played in 30 degrees Celsius summer heat. Alcaraz is the third Spaniard to win the pre-US Open title here after Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal. Sinner will now focus on recovery with the US Open starting on Sunday. The Italian is due to take part in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles on Tuesday, but his participation in that draw is now in doubt. "I'm super-super sorry to disappoint you," Sinner said at the trophy ceremony to fans. "I was not feeling great yesterday but I thought it would go away overnight. I tried to make it at least a small match but I could not handle more." The defending champion, who turned 24 last Saturday, added: "Some of you (fans) had to (miss) work or do other things today, so I'm really sorry. "I'm sorry to disappoint. Congrats to Carlos, I know this is not how you wanted to win. You are having an amazing season. "I'm sorry to disappoint but sometimes it's like this. This has been one of the hottest tournaments we have played." Sinner lasted for just 22 minutes, calling for the doctor after losing the fifth game and shortly after going to shake hands with Alcaraz. It was the second match in a row he had won over an ailing opponent, with Alexander Zverev playing ill in the closing stages of their semi-final. Alcaraz won his 22nd career title as he claimed his 17th victory in a row at the Masters 1000 level. "This is not the way I want to win trophies," Alcaraz said. "I understand how Jannik is feeling right now." He called the Italian "a true champion, I know you will come back better and stronger than ever." (AFP)

Arsenal capitalise on error to beat Man Utd 1-0

Arsenal capitalise on error to beat Man Utd 1-0 Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori headed home an early corner, aided by a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Photo: Reuters Manchester United's expensively-assembled new forward line drew a blank as Arsenal began their quest for the Premier League title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal after the Italian defender pounced on a huge mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. United have splashed out £200 million on new forwards to remedy a lack of punch in the final third. Despite promising debuts, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to find the net, while substitute Benjamin Sesko could not make Arsenal pay for not pursuing their interest in the Slovenian. After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2003/04. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points as the visitors never got going as an attacking force. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. The new arrivals have at least lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the performance of Ruben Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. However, United's good work was undone by a glaring error from Bayindir, who was deputising for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori the simplest of tasks to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that came back off the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the face of goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres as the solution to their need for a number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour mark by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish as Mbeumo saw a powerful header expertly clawed out by Raya. But Arsenal held firm to keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also won on the opening weekend of the campaign. (AFP)

Sinner, Gauff sail into Cincinnati Open semis

Sinner, Gauff sail into Cincinnati Open semis Sinner is now unbeaten in 25 successive hard court matches. Photo: Reuters Gauff eased past Italian Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets to reach the quarters. Photo: Reuters Jannik Sinner "felt great on the court" as he annihilated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2 to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-final with his 25th straight hardcourt match victory. The world number one powered through a rapid-fire opening set and overcame a wobble as he started the second set by dropping serve. The defending champion prevailed in a brief 71 minutes as he claimed an eighth victory in a row at this event and his 30th this season. "I felt great on the court today, you could see that," said the Italian, who turns 24 on Saturday. "But every day can be different. Let's see what I can do in the semis." Auger-Aliassime meekly lost the opening set after less than 30 minutes, delivering three double-faults in the final game. After dropping his serve early in the second Sinner broke back to level at 2-all, eventually advancing as Auger-Aliassime coughed up his eighth double fault on match point. "I served well today, that was the key for me," Sinner said. "I had a small drop in the second set and I'm happy that I broke back. He moves and serves well, he's difficult to play." In women's action, French Open champion Coco Gauff beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals. The second-seeded American's game showed minor rust after a bye in the previous round. "I could have maybe made some more first serves in that second set, but overall, I had a lot of aces and unreturnables," said Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion who went on to win the US Open title that year. Gauff, who was broken once in each set herself, finally secured a spot in the last eight with a concluding break of the 61st-ranked Italian's serve as Bronzetti hit long after 79 minutes on court. The American next takes on seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who crushed 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2. Krejcikova had treatment on her left foot in the second set and her movement was clearly hampered. Paolini, the 2024 Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist, won seven straight games on the way to a 4-0 second-set lead and rallied from 0-30 down in the final game to advance. "She's a great player and can do anything she wants with the ball," Paolini said. "But I don't think she was at 100 percent today. I'm glad I stayed in the match mentally to the last point." (AFP)
