A family of four, including two minor children, was rescued unharmed from alleged kidnappers in Limpopo on Wednesday morning. The family was abducted from their home in Mareseleng village on Tuesday by three armed suspects.
Police said during the early hours of Tuesday, a case of kidnapping involving a family was reported from Mareseleng village, under the Burgersfort policing area, in Sekhukhune District.
The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, immediately directed an intensified investigation to apprehend the suspects involved.
'Preliminary investigations reveal that three unidentified suspects, dressed in balaclavas and armed with firearms, forcibly entered the victims' residence. They found a man, his wife, and their two minor children sleeping in the same bedroom, threatened and tied them up before kidnapping them,' said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The assailants then fled the scene with the four family members, bundling them in the couple's white Volkswagen Polo hatchback.
A kidnapping case was opened at the Burgersfort police station.

'Thanks to a prompt police response and collaboration with the car tracking company, the victims were located and rescued unharmed at around 6 am today (Wednesday) on a farm in the Modjadjiskloof policing area,' said Ledwaba.
Lieutenant General Hadebe has commended the police teams for their 'resilience and professionalism', emphasizing that the swift response prevented potential harm to the victims and disrupted the assailants' plans.
Police investigations are still ongoing.
'We urge anyone with relevant information to assist in apprehending the suspects. Members of the public are advised to contact the investigating officer, Colonel Saleem Wahab at 082 319 9291, or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111,' the police appealed.

Last year, IOL reported that police in Mpumalanga recovered a white Toyota Fortuner SUV, which was stolen by armed assailants during a house robbery incident.
The house robbery occurred at Sabie on Friday morning, at around 2 am, according to Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli.
'According to a report, members of a certain family were asleep in the house when they were awakened by a noise, and only to realise that there were armed suspects who had already entered the house somehow,' said Mdhluli.
'It is further said that these suspects became very aggressive while they held the victims at gunpoint. In the process, the suspects ordered the victims to remain calm and threatened to kill them if they did not comply.'
The assailants reportedly took the victims' belongings, then demanded car keys for the Toyota Fortuner in the yard.
After loading the stolen items into the vehicle, the family members were then forced into the vehicle with their one-year-old baby.

KZN unveils R6 million mobile police stations to tackle crime in these hotspots

Ntuli also urged businesses to partner with the government in bolstering community-based safety initiatives. KwaZulu-Natal has rolled out four state-of-the-art mobile police stations in a R6 million initiative aimed at boosting police visibility and tackling crime in some of the province's most dangerous areas. Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli handed over the mobile units this week to the South African Police Service (Saps) in his capacity as the executive authority for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison. The units will be deployed to Inanda, Mbonambi, Bulwer, and Makhutha, areas that consistently report high levels of criminal activity. 'We want to see crime prevention interventions that yield real, measurable results. These mobile police stations will close the gap in service delivery and help restore community confidence in law enforcement,' Ntuli said. Fully equipped on-site police points Fitted with modern operational technology, the mobile stations will serve as fully functional on-site police contact points. Residents will be able to report crime, access essential police services, and engage directly with Saps officers without having to travel far from their neighbourhoods. The rollout follows the department's 2024 investment in 36 new patrol vehicles to help overcome shortages of crime-fighting resources, particularly in rural and densely populated areas. 'We are working around the clock to ensure that community safety structures are operational, resourced, and active in supporting the work of Saps. It is only through this integrated approach that we will turn the tide against crime,' Ntuli said. 'These brave men and women are on the frontlines every day. With more funding and training, they can do even more to safeguard our streets and support law enforcement efforts,' he said, referring to neighbourhood watches, street committees, and community policing forums. The Department of Community Safety and Liaison said the mobile stations form part of a growing portfolio of proactive safety interventions designed to create safer, more secure, and resilient communities across KwaZulu-Natal. It reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships between communities, Saps, and other key stakeholders to combat crime effectively. SAPS honours KZN unit for bringing justice to 13 rape victims

Detectives from the KwaZulu-Natal Serial and Electronic Crimes Unit (SECI) successfully brought a serial rapist to account after over a decade of terror in the King Cetshwayo District community. Image: Supplied This Women's Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is shining a spotlight on the hard work and commitment of the KwaZulu-Natal Serial and Electronic Crimes Unit (SECI) in bringing a serial rapist to justice, providing closure for a community terrorised for over a decade. The SECI is being honoured for its success in securing justice for 13 women and children who were victims of rape by the same perpetrator over more than 10 years. The SAPS said the specialised unit brought much-needed relief to the women of KwaMbonambi and Empangeni in the King Cetshwayo District, who were living in fear of a serial rapist who was on the loose. Between July 2010 and April 2021, a total of 13 women were raped similarly. Twelve of these incidents occurred within the KwaMbonambi policing precinct, with one additional case reported in Empangeni. Analysis of the modus operandi and victim descriptions established the presence of a serial rapist targeting young women. Detectives from the unit promptly took over the case, immediately beginning to gather evidence. Police said 12 of the victims, with the youngest being a 15-year-old girl, were accosted by the suspect either on their way to school or returning from school. 'The suspect would drag the victims to the bushes, next to the river, or in the sugarcane fields where he raped them at knifepoint before robbing them of their belongings.' The SAPS reported that the suspect once broke into a house where an elderly woman was sleeping with her two grandchildren. 'At knifepoint, the suspect raped the two young women and robbed the grandmother of her money and other belongings.' From 2010, SECI investigators faced the monumental task of collating evidence. However, the SAPS said the unit's determination to expose the serial rapist and secure justice for the victims drove them to meticulously re-examine every single docket. 'Under the stewardship of Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell Nsele, the detectives cracked the cases and overwhelming forensic evidence positively linked 42-year-old Bhekithemba Fanozi Nxumalo to all 13 cases of rape.' The court sentenced Nxumalo to 12 terms of life imprisonment for rape, plus an additional 75 years in jail for cases of robbery on June 10, 2024. The SAPS further highlighted the unit's recent successes. Between April 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the provincial SECI unit secured convictions leading to 18 life imprisonment sentences and an additional 425 years in jail. These sentences were for individuals convicted of serial rape, possession of child pornography, kidnapping, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and robbery.
