‘Bring it on': Akmal Saleh dares DAP to sever ties with him, says doing so means renouncing Umno too
The firebrand leader said such a move would be akin to DAP cutting off ties with its government ally Umno.
'Breaking ties with me = breaking ties with the Umno Youth member = breaking ties with Umno.
'Ok, bring it on,' he posted shortly on Facebook.
Earlier, Penang DAP Socialist Youth urged the party and wing's national leadership to end all political cooperation with him, especially ahead of the next general election.
It said Dr Akmal's behaviour allegedly goes against the Unity Government's stance of embracing diversity, but also deliberately stokes racial sentiments — in return undermining public confidence in the government's ability to safeguard national stability.
The wing also accused Dr Akmal of becoming a tool of Perikatan Nasional to disrupt the government's administration.
DAP's national leadership has since condemned Dr Akmal, with secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook saying the act amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader and a subversion of the rule of law.
Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups.
The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises.
The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after.
Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty.

PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over a video that is alleged to have hate content. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said Bukit Mertajam police received a report on Aug 12 regarding a video that went viral on Facebook under the account name 'Akmal Salleh'. 'In the video, Akmal is said to have made a statement that could be categorised as hate content, which has the potential to cause unrest among the community and disrupt public peace,' he said in a statement yesterday. Comm Azizee added that police have initiated an investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 506 of the Penal Code. He said the initial investigation was conducted by Penang police, but the case was taken over by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department yesterday. To date, two reports have been lodged over the matter in Penang. Dr Muhamad Akmal has also been summoned by the police to have his statement recorded over a demonstration in Kepala Batas, Penang. In a Facebook post, he said an investigating officer from Bukit Aman had contacted him to request that he provide his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters. On Thursday, Dr Muhamad Akmal led a group, which consisted of Umno Youth and Bersatu members, among others, in a march over an incident in which a Jalur Gemilang was displayed upside down at a hardware store. The demonstration passed without major incident, except for a brief war of words between the group and representatives from Lawyers for Liberty.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh completed giving his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here at 1.25am today over the assembly in Kepala Batas, Penang last Thursday. Muhamad Akmal's lawyer, Aizat Azam, said the Merlimau assemblyman had extended good cooperation and answered all of the approximately 80 questions posed by the investigating officer. "He (Muhamad Akmal) was investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he told reporters when met in front of the Dang Wangi police headquarters today. Meanwhile, Muhamad Akmal said he would give full cooperation to the police in the investigation into the case. He arrived at the Dang Wangi IPD at 11pm yesterday to have his statement recorded. The police had earlier confirmed that they had opened an investigation over a viral video posted on the Facebook account under the name ' Akmal Salleh '.
