Let authorities handle Jalur Gemilang cases, says AGC

More than 200 people led by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh gathered near a hardware shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, yesterday after the owner was probed for hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Attorney-General's Chambers has reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands in instances of protocol breaches regarding the Jalur Gemilang. The AGC stressed that any offence related to the improper installation or display of the national flag that may cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public anxiety may be subject to legal action. In a statement today, it cited incidents such as the Jalur Gemilang being installed upside down at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, and at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. It also highlighted the incomplete display of the Jalur Gemilang in the 2024 SPM examination results booklet, and on the official social media accounts of the Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, and Harian Metro newspapers. The AGC stressed that all complaints or information about such incidents should be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for action. 'The AGC also wishes to remind the public not to take matters into their own hands against anyone suspected of being involved in such acts,' it said. 'This includes raiding the premises of the suspected parties, circulating personal information or making baseless accusations on social media, and inciting provocation or issuing threats against individuals or organisations involved.' It said the public should not take over the role of the authorities, such as by ordering the removal of the national flag or seizing related materials. The AGC's statement comes after more than 200 people led by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh gathered near a hardware shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, yesterday after the shop's owner was investigated for hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down outside his premises. While the shop owner said it was an unintentional mistake which was quickly fixed, Akmal condemned the man and threatened to give him a 'class' on hanging the national flag. He also threatened to hold a protest if the man was not charged in court by yesterday. Although DAP sponsored a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop, Akmal said he would still turn up outside the premises with others to check if the flag was displayed correctly. The group gathered at the shop yesterday afternoon despite police advising against it. The gathering saw several shops in the area close earlier than usual as a precautionary measure. In April, several Malay-rights activists protested outside the headquarters of Sin Chew in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, after an illustration on the front page of its April 15 paper depicted the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon. Perkasa Youth chief Zool Amali Hussin and several others said they rejected Sin Chew's apology following the publication error, and urged the Chinese daily to sack two of its senior editors allegedly responsible for the mistake.

‘Bring it on': Akmal Saleh dares DAP to sever ties with him, says doing so means renouncing Umno too

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has today dared DAP leaders to break ties with him, following a call by the latter's Youth wing in Penang. The firebrand leader said such a move would be akin to DAP cutting off ties with its government ally Umno. 'Breaking ties with me = breaking ties with the Umno Youth member = breaking ties with Umno. 'Ok, bring it on,' he posted shortly on Facebook. Earlier, Penang DAP Socialist Youth urged the party and wing's national leadership to end all political cooperation with him, especially ahead of the next general election. It said Dr Akmal's behaviour allegedly goes against the Unity Government's stance of embracing diversity, but also deliberately stokes racial sentiments — in return undermining public confidence in the government's ability to safeguard national stability. The wing also accused Dr Akmal of becoming a tool of Perikatan Nasional to disrupt the government's administration. DAP's national leadership has since condemned Dr Akmal, with secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook saying the act amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader and a subversion of the rule of law. Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty.

I'll think about it, says KJ after Akmal offers to help with Umno return

Khairy Jamaluddin (left) said he will consider Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's offer to help facilitate his return to Umno. KUALA LUMPUR : Khairy Jamaluddin has responded coolly to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's offer to help facilitate his return to the party. 'That's very nice of him,' he said briefly to reporters when met at a product launch event today. 'I'm thankful for his comments and support, and I'll certainly consider it.' Yesterday, Akmal said he was open to facilitating the return of suspended and sacked Umno leaders such as Khairy, Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan. 'Those who were disciplined had contributed in ways we cannot forget. That's why I say unity in Umno is crucial, and that unity cannot come from just one side,' he was quoted as saying. Akmal also said those who had been suspended or sacked must set aside their egos if they truly cared about the party. Khairy, himself a former Umno Youth chief and ex-Rembau MP and health minister, was sacked from Umno in January 2023 over alleged disciplinary breaches. The Sembrong Umno division has also passed a resolution urging the party leadership to lift the suspension of Hishammuddin. However, the former Umno vice-president has hinted that he will not appeal his suspension as he had not been officially informed of his wrongdoing.

‘Very nice of him': Khairy non-committal on Umno return despite Dr Akmal's olive branch to suspended leaders

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Khairy Jamaluddin has reportedly responded to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's recent offer to assist his return to the party. Free Malaysia Today reported that the former Umno leader acknowledged the gesture but remained non-committal about rejoining. 'That's very nice of him,' he reportedly said. 'I'm thankful for his comments and support, and I'll certainly consider it.' Yesterday, Dr Akmal reportedly said he was ready to act as a bridge to bring back suspended leaders Khairy Jamaluddin, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan into the party. He said his only goal was to ensure Umno remained strong as a family. Dr Akmal also urged suspended or sacked former Umno leaders to set aside their egos if they still care for the party. He also said that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had expressed his willingness to accept appeal letters from those affected by disciplinary actions. In January 2023, Umno announced that former Youth chief Khairy was sacked from the party along with former Selangor chapter chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, citing breaches of party discipline. In addition, former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan were suspended for six years, along with Datuk Maulizan Bujang and Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Sharif.

Forget ego if you care about Umno, suspended and sacked leaders told

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said the party recognised the contributions made by the former leaders. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Suspended or sacked Umno leaders must set aside their egos if they truly care about the party, says Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh. Akmal said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has already indicated his willingness to consider appeals from those who were subjected to disciplinary action, Berita Harian reported. 'The party is for everyone, and we must come together again. We need them (those who were suspended or sacked) to help strengthen the party. 'But there's one condition – everyone must put their ego aside. God willing, Umno will become stronger,' he was quoted as saying after officiating the Seremban Umno Youth annual general meeting last night. He was commenting on a motion by Sembrong Umno calling for suspended former division chief Hishammuddin Hussein to be welcomed back to the party However, the Sembrong MP and former party vice-president has hinted that he would not appeal his suspension, saying that he had not been officially told what he had done wrong, and appealing was not a measure of loyalty. Akmal said he was also open to facilitating the return of not only Hishammuddin but also other former leaders like Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan. 'Those who were disciplined had contributed in ways we cannot forget. That's why I say unity in Umno is crucial, and that unity cannot come from just one side,' he said.
